Don't read in too much on the absence of the Fn+F7 combo.
From what I hear, switching GPU's will be a little different with the arrandales in that it will be switchable via drivers/software (ie right-click menu via desktop, etc).
-
-
I can't wait 2 more weeks for my m17x-r2! :'(
-
For the ones with Arrandales then it won't be a problem, of course.
But what about those who have the old 45nm quad cores in it? -
We didn't buy them for battery life.
-
does anyone have any ideas what the response time should be for the LED screen ?
-
Jav, I'll be really interested to know how much it costs you all in all, after the taxes and extras have been paid...
As far a Blu-Ray discs are concerned, I think (though sorry if Im wrong) that there is no region coding for them....you might have trouble with SD (standard def) discs though.
Also I seem to remember that some playback software allows you up to 4 region changes before the last region selected becomes permanent -
You can actually change the region code via the Device Manager for your Drive. As you mentioned Baerius, 4 changes and thats it.
-
Need the model number of the screen. You can probably get it from a Precision M6400 owner.
-
Ah thanks, I was a bit worried! Ill only need to switch the region code once anyway.
yep ill let you guys know how much tax I pay at the door and how the blu-ray burner/reader works out.
Mandrake, can you send me that link to the thread that shows the dell packaging processes?
-
It's actually a sticky in the Dell section
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=156489
There's also a video:
<param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/jqkPDqrdrZU&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/jqkPDqrdrZU&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" </embed></object> -
Is the M17x capable of Wake On Lan from shut down, I can see no options in the BIOS. Any ideas?
-
Ah thanks a lot. I've asked the company that's ordering mine to check the website and they told me it says "in-production". On the link you sent me, there's a number you can use to calll dell, how do I ask them which stage my order is in if I don't know the order number etc?
I doubt the company I orderd from will call them because I just about got them to check the order status on the dell website for me. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Actually Sleey0, there will not be any option for integrated graphics even with the arrandale cores as the pm55 chipset does not support it, has to be of the xx57 chipsets to support the integrated graphics
Expect miserably low battery life guys (but excellent overclocking) -
hey does it void warranty if i install my own ram later
-
The number is on the first post of the order status thread.
-
Yep I know that, but I was wondering if I could call them to ask the status of my order?
What info about my order would I need to tell dell? -
Order number usually. Customer number usually fails for me.
-
Ahh, thanks scook.
Didn't know that the R2 used the PM55. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
It was a slight let down, but I guess not a deal breaker for many people
although I do enjoy having upto 3.5 hours on my M17x when I want it -
No, the enthusiast didn't buy Arrandale procs.
-
Ah ok ill try and ask that company for my order number.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
well this is why I always thought having the igp on the cpu package was stupid, it just limits you
this is the perfect way to show that -
anybody know as to whether or not ordering the 920xm and crossfirex nets u the 240 adapter??
-
Yeah, the manual says if you get either one you'll get the 240 adapter.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
that will get you the 240 watt adapter
either the 4870 in crossfire OR the 920xm would do, both certainly will
And it can reliably push about 280 watts if need be
-
there any way to make it so that it pushes 280, and how do we know though does it say it once you configure it?
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
you just have to OC your laptop so it pulls more power
I use a kill-a-watt meter to see how much power is going through my power supply, it has gotten upto 290 but then it shuts down the laptop
I have hit 280 without shutting down though -
SillyHoney Headphone Enthusiast
OMG! Sometimes I do really need to use my laptop for a long session. This news make me tempted less for the R2. -
and unfortunately my installs of crysis and crysis warhead will be lost, i'll just find a new key online i guess.
-
Maybe this has been answered, but is the chassis for the M17x-R2 supposedly the same as the M17x before it?
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
the 9400m in the M17x-R1 is what made it a very unusual laptop, it had top shelf gaming abilities as well as upto 3.5 hours on battery
-
SillyHoney Headphone Enthusiast
Oh thanks Scook. I didnt know that awesome feature is kinda unusual
But doesn't MBP has exactly the same feature: 9400M + 512MB 9600GT.
Edit: But as I know you have to log off to switch between those cards so its not as good lol. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Not quite GTX 280m SLI that we have.....but yes, same feature
What makes the M17x unique is having GOOD graphics as well as the 9400m lol -
Personally I'd rather have a notebook without the IGP. Less driver and hardware headaches to deal with. M17x-R1 was never truly able to address the DPC latency problem but I suspect it was in part due to that IGP being there. The M17x-R2 will have no DPC issues as the M15x with PM55 doesn't either.
-
Lets just hope they fixed the throttling issue too
-
Definitely march??? where did you read that??
-
I was reading the manual on the M17x-r2 comes with either 150w or 240w cable does anyone know what the minimum configuration is to recieve the 240w cord
and is it the same with M17x-r1 -
Extreme i7 or Crossfire 4870
-
Yes, being able to run 2-3hrs long video presentations on battery is the deal maker for me. That was the reason for going the Alienware route instead of Clevo'. Otherwise I'd stick to i7-975 desktop CPU.
-
Intel® Core™ i7 620M 2.66
Intel® Core™ i7 720QM 1.6GHz
these both cost the same amount
which one would you recommend -
when will the 5870 be released?
-
This is quad vs dual. You can't take advantage of IGP in the 620 but it will run with less power saving some battery.
-
Rumor is March.
-
if the we can't take advantage of using the igp does that mean it will be disabled and not use any power up?
Also if it isn't using any being used does that mean the processor might be able to run alittle higher in clocks -
Will i be able to send my laptop to dell to fit the 5870s in my laptop in march?
-
Yes, it supposed to be smart enough to know where to use the power. I haven't seen any tests to this fact so I remain skeptical. Might be able to find something googling.
-
i'm pretty sure its not going to be easy to just upgrade to the new cards. I recommend waiting for them to become available in a configuration.
It was such a hassle to try and get the 4870's. If you want 5870's then I recommend waiting till march. -
I can't answer that. I've never sent in a system for an upgrade. -
oh ok.
i was wondering if these are the graphics cards coming with our M17Xs?
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/...etail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=A1982816 -
no. first that is a desktop card. second its dual core graphics card.
