Most games don't seem to take huge amounts of RAM yet. The most I've seen personally is WOW eating 1.2-1.8GB. I do happen to have 8GB on my desktop but I run multiple VMs of Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise and Windows Storage Server 2008 Standard that eat RAM. So unless you have something like that or do a lot of editing with very large photos, 4GB should be good.

You dont need 8GB RAM if you only game.
Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image will work. -
any free ones sillyhoney??

I dont know any handy but you can read the links above.
But if backing up is important and a regular job, I suggest you go for one of the two in my previous post. -
Aranthira (or anyone that could answer this): i have an m1730 that is 1 year old exactly...how would i get dell to buy it back so i can get an m17x????
-
Ordered mine today. Will do a comparative review once it comes in.
-
not that backing up is a regular job, i just installed a slew of games on my m15x and don't wanna loose them cuz of product keys ect, and i have downloadable content for em i'm new to pc gaming and i'm not sure if i'll be able to reinstall and what not.
also thanks for the help sillyhoney
i read somewhere about a backup program that makes an image of your hardrive anyone know which that is?? or should i just make a recovery backup using windows seven and then recover onto the m17x sorry i'm a noob at all this. -
Not too much of a problem. I went through 3 sets of 8800's in the laptop. When they were going bad in october i contacted dell who supposedly tried for a month to get replacement cards. When they couldn't because they are out of them they offered me a comparable Studio 17. LOL That was funny. When i refused they offered me my money back.
All the time they refused me a comparable M17x. which again was funny because thats what i bought anyway. -

Can anyone tell me if the DVD player can be upgraded to Blue Ray once they are available? Sucks not being able to get the Blue Ray player...it's my only complaint with my order.
-
Keep me informed then please, I'll post the config here as soon as I get it.
-
You should check if your games are Steam compatible. Then you can link them to your account forever and ditch the DVDs. They will be available for re-download whenever you want. Forever. (Well, forever-ish)

Yeah... As long as... lol -

Still can't configure the M17x on the business site

Pffttt my m17x is "in production" that's bad I think!
Where's the thread with the processes again? -
crysis and crysis warhead, i have dragon age on ea download manager so that should be ok i think.
mass effect also on download manager but that was digital so yeah. -
It's supposed to be in production. It will stay that way for the next week or two until it ships out. -
So joker your getting the Asus G73 for your girlfriend ?
Didnt you get the M15x for her and it was to big ? ...? -
The M15x was hijacked by me
She ended up going for the G60vx but didn't like the low resolution (1366x768) so she went with a Studio XPS 16. That turned out with tons of defects (broken hinge, keyboard w/coke spilled on it, scratched lcd panel etc) so Dell shipped her a brand new factory exchange. Rather than use it, I mentioned the G73 to her so she agreed to go for that and sell the Studio XPS. It worked out great for her, I'll only have to put in a few hundred to cover the difference.
-
ahhh so it has nothing to do with you wanting to test it ?
...your girlfriend is very indecisive .... -
Haha you know I want to test it! She's on to the fact that I want to as well. Actually truth is she was ready to accept the SXPS 16 but I coerced her into selling it and going for the G73
-
Personally speaking I think the SXPS16 is a nicer machine, nowhere near as much grunt granted. Definitely more suited to a girl than the G73
-
Crap I hope she doesn't read your post lol. -
i think she already did

Has anyone experienced the palm rest paint wearing off after time on an M17x? Also, any apparent denting of the aluminum? I noticed MBP's dent easily so I'm hoping this isn't the case with the M17x.
-
No there is no paint on the palm rest and no denting ... I have dropped mine and it's alot thicker then the MacBook ... Trust me you could shoot it ...

These things are built like tanks really, the palm rest is a certain type of plastic, very durable and wear resistant, and when I do actually notice a small amount of palm rest wear (the greasy look) which takes months to accumulate to even be noticeable, unlike my M570RU, I can actually wipe it off with a microfiber cloth and it looks as new as the day I bought it. As for denting, I've never dropped mine but the M17x feels like it would be tough to dent, it feels really solid and I would imagine you would need a pretty high drop to dent this thing. -
The DDR 1333 Mhz is back up. Couldn't configure it earlier on the US site.
-
I would order it right now if the blu ray was in stock/option.
Also, what kind of warrenty would you guys reccomend? -
I've just ordered the crysises, I hope they're worth it! Can't wait to test them out when I get my m17x-R2
Does anyone know of any games coming out soon which have better graphics than crysis? -

It depends what core you are getting. Last time I checked, i5s cannot use 1333mhz. Maybe dell figured something out....
Edited: Still stand with anything below core-i7 720 , cannot get the 1333mhz ram. -
I've ordered the blu ray burner/reader with mine and I went for the 4 year advanced plan
Its quite expensive so I would recommend that you go for that one as it includes accidential damage
-
how did you get the blu ray? its not an option on teh website?
-
I selected a 920, the 1333mhz has not been on there since about 4:00pm today. Someone else posted saying that they guessed they ran out
Might be a glitch since the layout of the site is different than it was this morning.
If anyone else tries to do a build order and notices that it does not list again, they should go to the software tab and then go back to hardware. Thats when it displayed again for me. -
I ordered mine from www.hidevolution.com as I'm in the UK. They order it from dell US to their HQ in california, then ship it to me in the UK. They also deliver in the US. They're well connected with dell, so they get special benefits, such as the blu-ray player. First time I'm using them so I hope it all works out well
Also, does anyone know if ill be able to watch/play uk region blu-ray movies, dvds and games? Or am I stuck with the US format. I sure hope I will be able to switch the beast to a UK region laptop. (If laptops have region locks - not too sure if they do or not) -
so which I7 CPUs have the bilt in GPU ?

The next gen 6x blu-ray drives for notebooks should be in decent supply in a month or two. If you can't wait I would just order it with the dvd drive and upgrade in a couple months.Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -

2 things I noticed going through the manual (sorry of this got covered)
the chipset is PM55 so anything with integrated graphics, it will not be utilized at all (unless I am mistaken)
and the notebook should accept Sata 3 drives (but will they operate at that speed?)
And the vcore for overclocking is just amazing....this is rubbing salt in the wounds of all the clevo owners now lol -
PM55, so it's different from the original M17x ? or am I completely off ?
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
of course it is different....completely different generation of CPUs here
-
alright so am I right in saying that the stuttering should be a thing of the past with the new one ?
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
not necessarily, I am pretty sure the stuttering was due to power alocation between the cpu and gpus, but odds are they got it straightened out
-
WEll actually a dell rep said it will be available again on the 17thLast edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -

I also just noticed that fn+f7 is now just for cloning the display or not, which reinforces the absence of integrated graphics (as well as battery life - one of the things I really like about this....)
-
Good riddence to the crappiest chipset ever
-
So with the apparent absence of BinaryGFX what kind of battery life are we looking at?
-
Maybe an hour and 15 minutes on balanced. That's what my M15x currently gets with an i820 and gtx 260m.
-
Is that on a 6 or a 9 cell battery?
Keep in mind the M17x only fits a 9 cell battery.
To put it into perspective my M17 will last 2 hours of near-idle use, that's with a 45W TDP quad core and two 55W TDP graphics cards. With the M17x having higher power graphics cards, if you go for one of the 45nm i7 processors you probably won't even see 1.5 hours-remember that my M17 has a 12 cell battery. -

Definitely get at least one year of Complete Care, you can always add another year or two to it later.
