I got the 320 gb 7200 rpm drive and my total was $836. Ordered at about 4:00pm.

 

How the hell did you end up paying $900 with a 160gb 5400rpm HD?

I got everything you got + the 320gb HD for $830.......I'm not bragging, I'm just trying to figure out what discount you're missing.

Both suck for a full laptop, but this is designed for playing games at decent framerates, but very portable. Kind of like a super gaming netbook.

 

Without Gobi, my total would have been below $800. Probably like $790. Gobi was ~$115 with student discount.

 

Oh! no wonder. That's actually a really good deal then. Just buy an HD or an SSD from newegg huh.

 

My cost was $1142 after tax, with SSD and BT and all else listed in my sig. So I def wanted to nab the 256GB SSD at a super low cost relatively. ~$300 so closer to the $1/GB range

 

Yeah I was really impressed with Dell's coupons. My order just processed through, which is why I published it here. It's "In Production" now If you wait, I'm sure you'll come across another deal. Dell does a good job with these crazy discounts.

 

Yeah, but I've never seen them allow $150 stackable coupons, especially on a brand new product.

The closest I've seen was HP releasing a $350 coupon on the brand new i5 envy which my friend ordered.

 

So is the $100 off $1000 automatic?

Also, are you guys getting the 160 GB just to keep the price down and upgrade later? Or possibly there's a second harddrive slot?

 

Yeah I'm getting another HDD on newegg or something. I might be able to use my old 2.5" HDD.

Honestly I wouldn't recommend the 160GB 5400 RPM HDD unless you plan to upgrade it immediately. If you want to go cheap get the 250GB 7200 RPM drive and upgrade it sometime in the future.

@ MSTarken and Howie, yeah people are really only getting the 160 if they have a larger HDD sittin around at home etc. But a 5400RPM is only good for storage as nowadays 7200rpm match the heat, power consumption, and noise of 5400 but perform much better.

 

The only reason I opted for the 7200rpm 250GB over the base 160GB was to push it just over the $1,000 limit to get the better coupon. I plan to drop in an SSD anyway.


As far as the choice of color, I initially was going to go cosmic black, but after seeing the videos, I think the exterior metallic silver is a better look and opted for that. As far as I can tell, interior colors are the same on both versions, aren't they?

interior, yes. And same boat, the silver looks slick I finally went with it on my 3rd order LOL. I originally wanted it since black was fingerprinty, but couldn't commit to the bright silver pictured on the ordr page. The silver in vids/pics looks darker so I opted for it.

 

Yeah, I like the look of silver as well but I opted for the black.

I've always had sliver/grey laptops, so I want to change it up and get something more evil looking haha

 

I went with black because I lo~ve how black looks with the AlienFX colors. I can use this bad boy as a night light, too! I'll put all the blue lights on and sit it on my desk and I'll never bump into stuff at night again.

 

Just out of curiosity I have two quick questions.
What are your thoughts on the 2 CPU options, is the Core2 Duo that much better?
And also if i opt for 8GB of RAM in the M11X can i swap that with my 4GB in my M17X (as in put the 8GB from the M11X into the M17X), i was thinking of upgrading my RAM in my 17 but figured this might just be easier. Are they the same/compatible.

But my Dell purchase summary email says the RAM is 800 MHz. I wonder which is correct?

 

The memory is 1066 mhz DDR3. However it's gonna be running at 800 mhz, prior to overclocking the processor.

Does this mean I can swap out the RAM in the M11X with my M17X then?

Yeah it should work without a problem, however be aware that the m11x has only 2 ram slots.

 

The M17X does too though right?

man... I went from no Dell to Dell fanboy in like 2 months.. Why can't someone build the perfect lappy??? The only one I could find that came close was the Precision in my sig... The M11x is the closest other one. It's crazy, just crazy. The M17x would have been THEE ONE, only if WWAN had been available, but nope.. And WWAN is a must for me.

well that M6400 you got is pretty much a loaded beast! That video card is 256 bit GDDR5 isnt it?! And its cpu is NICE as well as the screen

AHCI matters in the case of an SSD such as the intel, which takes advantage of NCQ which is only possible with ahci enabled.

Also, the fact this is a bios option helps in the case of running certain rare cases like either booting an osx install or flashing a drive firmware or running secure erase on an SSD to wipe the free space without using a write cycle.

On standard HDDs and most likely any SSD other than an indilinx or intel, this wont make a huge difference with what its set to.

Also, when you install windows with IDE mode enabled, you will blue screen upon attempting to boot windows with ahci enabled. This requires a registry entry to be changed before windows will boot and install ahci drivers.

Finally, running drives in raid requires RAID mode to be set in the bios, and from what I can tell this is just ahci mode with extra raid options and/or raid extended bios config being launched on boot, so running a drive in ahci mode is kinda like raid for single drives.

 

I was the guy you speak of, and it's not quite as simple as you may think.

The Samsung drives are way behind the intel and ocz drives in the generally accepted most important improvement SSDs make over HDDs: 4k random reads/writes.

If you don't care why 4k random reads/writes are important, and don't care that the samsung costs way too much considering the existence of the intel and ocz drives, by all means buy it.

The reason I sounded like a crazy guy is because I am personally aghast that dell and every other OEM charge the prices they do for clearly inferior SSD product.

Dell puts samsung SSDs in their notebooks. Read my above post for more information about samsung SSDs

 

Dell uses Samsung SSD's only (as does many OEM's).
