someday there could be a reason to get 8GB but I really don't think the m11x as it is now can really utilize it.

I think it's safe to say that you'd know if you needed more than 4gb based on using programs in the past. Like if you do heavy photoshop or cad work.

8gb ram would be for intense video editing / photoshop but regardless, would be bottlenecked by the CPU and therefore rendered useless.

Alright, I'm new to the lappy world and I want this to last and save money. 4GB it is, then. Thanks, NBR gang.

Quick question with all the bluetooth mouses being thrown around. My question is what would save more battery? Using the internal bluetooth with say, the razer bluetooth mouse or a laser mouse with the nano usb receiver [logitech vx nano in my case]

That is what I thought. AW and their tricky marketing. "Reduce bottlenecks with more RAM" I guess that applies to the 4gb option. :p

they will always push you to get the more expensive option

it is dirty sales techniques and not caring about the customer - everywhere does it, when I worked at Micro Center we were always told to do it

Because they easily have 500+ orders on EPP for when all the coupons stacked so now they raised prices due to demand.

I've built quite a few rigs for myself and others and they still almost duped me. It is probably because of the processor even though it is still good, but not great. The size, GPU, and battery life are the systems saving grace. :p

I'll definitely enjoy gaming on this.

Is their any particulate reason why 8 gig from 4 gig has such a huge price difference?

i mean I'm using a 4gb ram dv7t right now and i only ordered the 2gb ram option. I figure I have to have a pagefile anyway to launch warhammer 40k so my ssd having some pagefile will make the whole system relatively fast enough.

Later I may even buy a 4gb stick instead of a 2gb in order to upgrade, if I bought the 4gb right away id have an extra lying around.

edit: the reason they cost so much is because they can, and 2gb are the standard now, and its tougher to put an extra 2gb on a single stick, and if you get 4gb sticks you probably dont mind spending more money than you should :)

coolermaster infinity? it's what I bought, it may not be necessary but I do know that I prefer laptops balancing between both of my legs instead of me needing to sit indian style or balance it on one leg like I do with my netbook.

go to newegg or amazon and search for slim external dvd burner. maybe add slot loading to that so you can get the really slim kind, that'd be the best for a laptop like the m11x i'd say.

you can get the citi forward card. it gives you 5 points for every $1 spent at bookstores, movies, music, and restaurants. 10k points for a $100 giftcard works...so points work out to about 5% at those locations.

amazon is considered a "bookstore" no matter what items you buy from them :D

Regarding 8GB of RAM... I decided on 8 because Adobe CS5 is coming out soon and Photoshop looks inSaNe! Also, on the off chance someone does ever figure out how to OC the CPU beyond 1.73 it will take more RAM to make it stable. Lastly, I couldn't find an 8GB kit for less than the upgrade Dell was offering. Out the door I payed $1278.10 US, for my system. :)

    Specs - C2D SU7300 / Windows 7 Ultimate / 500GB 7200RPM HD / 8GB RAM / Bluetooth

That's a very good question. I didn't read anything on MotioninJoy's website about the other controllers working... but I didn't read anything about them not working. ;) If you really want, you can get a joystick used for flight sims or something... but I'm not sure how that would work out.

There's supposed to be a Street Fighter IV gamepad bundled with the game. It's a wired controller but it looks snazzy. http://kotaku.com/5246363/street-fighter-iv-pc-gets-control-pad-bundle

    so...i was reading the link you sent on motionjoy. haha....i got stuck on the first step here (ya, i'm a n00b). it says;

"First make sure that your USB connection is functioning properly(see the above instructions), as this set of instructions is for the Bluetooth connection."

i thought bluetooth was all wireless and you didn't need any dongles if since bluetooth is built into the laptop. any idea why you would need to check usb connection?

Good catch! Maybe we can stalk the drivers page to get an idea of when they're expecting our M11xs to ship.

@hawkeye18455 You need to install the USB drivers first but after you do, you can use it via bluetooth. Don't worry: you won't need to keep anything plugged in while you're using it (as long as you have bluetooth in your laptop).

Ordered mine and am expecting it on march 5. Quick question though. I am just now realizing that for some reason it didnt go through for my 3 yr warranty instead, it gave me the 1 yr plan. Can i change it to a 3 yr warranty at anytime within that inital first year or should i just call them and upgrade the plan now? Any help would be greatly appreciated

It's more expensive if you upgrade to a 3 year later than purchasing it with your laptop. I personally bought a 3 year with accidental through square trade for 150$ instead of paying the 300$ for the same thing with Dell. But Dell will send someone to your house to fix it where as with square trade they give you a pre paid box to ship it in and if they can't fix it within 5days they refund your laptop purchase. I personally plan to just get my 800$ back in 2.8 years lol =).

No problem. I was looking for an awesome bluetooth controller too and when I found out that I could use my PS3 controller (in this thread about 75 pages back THANKS TO EGGS SCRAMBLED!) I was so stoked.

I suppose I should put a link to that post in my sig so people can use it...

    Nm i found it. http://www.alienware.co.uk/sub_pages/warranty.aspx

they just send you a notification 30 days before your initial one is up asking to upgrade. Since i already have the one year ill just prolly wait for that so i can save up some money towards gettin the 3 yr plan. Im so ing happy i finally be able to kill some zombies on the go. Also prolly gonna get the valve complete pack on steam for $100

yo, I've been following this thread since post 1 of part 1. I feel like I know most of you guys by now, lol. I now shall post an entirely useless and long list of my m11x order that takes up a entire page, jk. I bought mine on Feb 3 if you were curious just after they stopped stacking the $50 and $100 coupons. My ETA is 3/4/10.
Also on a more serious note, does anyone know if you lose the alienware login screen if you upgrade to ultimate. I might need Win 7 virtual mode in the future for Pro-E (3d cad) and its too late too cancel my order.

I'm upgrading to Ultimate as soon as I get it (I might mess with installing the PS3 controller before just in case something goes wrong) so I'll try and see if there's a way to keep those settings.

Hmm, I stayed with the 1 year but I've been looking at the Square Trade warranty. It seems like I need to choose between a Razer Orochi/Kabuto combo and a ST warranty.

Some of you said you purchased a ST warranty for your M11x: have you had any experience with ST before? Is it a pretty reliable insurer or will I have to fight them to get my computer serviced?

Actually, the link you posted to the Warranty info on the alienware site might not apply. I believe this is only for their pre-Dell products. What you need to look at is here:
