Quick quaestion to the lucky owners. Can anyone let me know what the speakers are like? I want to be able to listen to music on the go and I am hoping the speakers are better than my old sxps 1340 or my current sony CW (tinny pieces of carp)

 

If they sound bad, Insignia makes a USB powered set of portable speakers that sit on top of the monitor. I use them with my ASUS netbook, and they sound as good as the speakers in my XPS 1730. Bought them at Best Buy.

 

Speakers are actually quite good, better than I expected

No there is no cap or mouse mat its too small for them things

and you can't get a customised name plate in the UK

 

just got about an hour ago. excellent keyboard and touchpad. My boss caught me playing with it and told me write the model number cause he is getting one. The read lights on the keyboard and the speaker sold him, he said. The speakers are also loud as I palyed a youtube video he said he could hear it from 3 floors above ( I am at the lobby desk.).

I am blown away by the quality of the laptop. This is my first Alienware and will not be my last.

Few questions for new owners (if possible to answer):

- Does it have a solid/good build quality feel? No creeks or flex on the keyboard or anything?

- Is it loud (fan noise) when under load from gaming and what not?

- Can you turn off all of the LED's while leaving the backlit keyboard on?

 

I'd think you can turn off the backlighting, but my question is can it be dimmed? there are times I'd want it on, but not bright enough to bother someone sleeping next to me

 

to those who have there lappy; Does the system come with a restore DVD or a HDD partition?

 

from unboxing vid and picture it comes with a DVD.. unsure about the partition.

 

thats good... that saves me the step of cloning the drive. I should be able to just stick my 128 Gb SSD in and use the restore DVD then

Well even my asus netbook came with recovery discs with no optical drive. But they did include a recovery partition also.

 

What so funny about including dvds, really. If you can afford a computer in this price range you can also afford a external usb drive to keep at home for installation and recovery.

 

I hate that reasoning. If I just spent $900 on a computer, maybe I don't have another $50 for an external. I may have saved up $900 and can't afford something extra.

 

Well I can understand that. Personally I have drive in my closet somewhere that I share between 3 computers and bring out when a reinstall is needed. I'm happy I dont have to drag a drive around the other 99,99% of the time and I'm happy its not included so I don't have to for pay something I already have.

 

Yeah I wouldn't want to get an internal drive if I already have an external one, but I'm used to making bootable USB drives since they're so much faster and easier than going through CD after CD.

This lil' ET is already pushing its size for the netbook class. I'm glad they left the drive out. Sucks batt., adds bulk, and likely could have rearranged the entire interior. What netbook has a disk drive anyway ._.

Also, what appears to be damaged plastic on the laptop is actually a protective cover. Furthermore, the big alienware logo on the bottom of the screen also lights up. I just turned it off because, imo, it doesn't make any sense. It's like mustang owners writing MUSTANG all over their sports car.

Ummmm, I hope I am wrong, but I think that is just the protective film. Try peeling it off. Looks like the protective film that comes on electronics.

 

jon, what is that in IMG_0301.jpg on the outer edge of the top panel - right side? Looks like some kind of abrasion.
