That is a good idea, if they can replace the screen only I am fine with that...
-
-
Mine should be hopefully in by the end of the week ( fingers crossed ).
-
I might see if they can send out a replacement screen and have a tech install it. If I need to send my unit back, it's not worth the trouble for me. Especially when I've been thrilled with the laptop otherwise, and the defect is only really noticeable in text situations - in games I can't see it unless I look for it. I'd rather just deal with it then have to wait another 3 weeks for a replacement lol. -
What happened to all the pictures.. and videos everyone promised!
-
Just email tech support. Thats what I'd do. They'll send someone to replace the darn thing at a time you choose.
But that's Asia Pacific, no idea how they do it elsewhere.
-
I'd take it apart myself and clean it -but afraid to... I'll call and see if they can send out a tech - I know it's not a pixel as it changes position slightly if I move to the left/right (plus you have to look pretty close at it to see it).
Overall - really happy with the unit. Not exhibiting any issues whatsoever - will be installing an SSD on it tomorrow (assuming I can find the Command Center installation program). -

Hi there.
Anyone experiencing the fan problem that it tends to go on in rather similar intervals (on for half a minute about every two minutes - however i never measured it):
Check if the task WmPrvSE.exe uses the CPU regularly (in my case it is 8-12%). To check if it is running start the task manager, to to processes and click the button on the bottom of the list to display all processes.
If so, this contributes to the fan going on so much more regularly. One way to correct this is to mark the service "Windows Management Instrumentation Provider" (in german "Windows Verwaltungsinstrumentation") as manual and stop it.
It still appears to start up when you restart windows though so you have to stop it again, but it helped me a lot.
I would like to solve this problem in a more thorough matter however other services depend on the "Windows Management Instrumentation Provider" service. If anyone has hints on how to make WmPrvSE.exe stop using CPU but still have it running, please do not hesitate to tell us here.
Also, anyone who found a tool to show and control the fan, please tell us of that tool. I tried hwmonitor and speedfan and both did not appear to allow controlling it, and do not even sho the rpm of the fan. -
Please post order status related items in the Order Status thread.
Thanks. -
WOOT - Mine arrived last night finally.
Ordered on 2/2 - shipped on 2/17 NBD - arrived 2/23 (not my definitiaon of NBD but it's herenow).
I ordered the SU4100 version - with the std hard drive.
I just finished installing W7 on the new 500 GB 7,200rpm Hitachi I put in.
Also - for those with the Su4100 - I have overclocked to 1.73 and it seems stable - no issues yet. Once I have finished finding and installing the drivers I am going to start downloading games from Steam and let you know how it performs. -
glad to hear it corteen. Mind running a 3DMark06 bench? We've only had one other SU4100 bench here at NBR and I'm curious in the scores - OC'd of course.
-
well, mine has arrived, very impressed by the quality of the build, excellent feel to the keyboard (a rubberised plastic, nice snappy responsiveness and in spite of the cramped keys, very easy to type on.) screen feels very small moving from a 13" MBP, but the smaller screen area combined with the higher resolution can be easily attributed here. mine has the SSD, 4Gb RAM and the su7300, feels snappy and responsive. will test things out when steam finishes faffing
-
@Morkeleb = I wonder if people are still blinded by the pretty lights and have not noticed the fan yet
Fan matters to me too, so I am also curious how loud it gets. My wife would be ticked to keep hearing the fan at night. Headphones will not cover that noise up
My HP2010 is annoyingly loud, but the CW27FX was very quiet and my Dell work laptop is too, but can not put games on that. I do not like taking it home anyways, since it REALLY sux when you get to work and notice you forgot it. Dumb d' dumb dumb. -
mine has arrived I have also made an unboxing vid will be on later today as currently rendering on my slow pc abt 1hr and then uploading maybe another 1hr i will post a link later, I have overclocked to 1.73 and no problems
-
@ahanslot = Did you use CPU-Z to check the speed? And which processor do you have?
-
-
Yeah that would be nice. And a screenie too if thats not too much to ask.

Question(to Canadian orders)
Mine shipped late yesterday. I phoned to get the purolator tracking number.
How long does it take to show up on Purolator so that I can track it?
Canadian order to Southwestern Ontario.
Thanks in advance -
-
Mine's been OC'd since it came out of the box.. played about 2-3 hours of "gametime" on it - no hiccups at all (i.e. no BSOD, etc.) -
Personally - while it's nice.. it's also aggravating a bit. I'd rather have the ability to clean the screen directly - IMHO. If there's a complaint I have - the screen (cover) would be it - albeit - it's a minor complaint.. -
well, Apple did it right.. they have actual Glass, and no gaps for dust to get in.. I think it's easier to clean the E2E though, with my Unibody MB I just put some spray on a soft cleaning towel and wiped. Only complaint was the need for a screen protector to sit between the keys and screen since my grease would then xfer to the glass. My kabuto should work nicely for this.
-
Well i finally got mine today. Ordered on 2/4. Funny thing is i ran down the FEDEX guy at work to see if he had it on his truck. Just so happens he did. Saved him a trip to my house. Looks nice and no dead pixels or any flaws. Will be doing benchmarks and taking pictures of it when i get home.
-
It's really not a big deal - however - it's that I "know" it's there and I can't get it off..
I'm on the phone with Dell now to see what they can do.. -
@jsgiv - just a suggestion, but have you tried some sort of duster maybe it's "magnetic" enough to drag that speck of dust out of the way? lol I never had a dust spec so just a random suggestion. I've heard dust behind the screen on some MB's and they instantly got them replaced, I don't see why Dell can't do the same if you wanted them to.
-
Just got mine, downloading steam stuff on it now... I'm not real picky, but the speakers on this are awesome for the size... They blow away the ones on my Sony SR.
Mines pretty flawless so far, the only thing I can see right off the bat is that the space between the main part (with keyboard) is slightly less on the right side of the screen than on the left... kind of like the hinge level isn't exactly true by about 1-2 mm. Not a biggie, but if I stare at it I can tell...
The screen itself is great... I would say it's better than my Sony's, more vivid color... It glares a bit though, well a lot... but that's fine... Also the bezel on the top and bottom is Heavy D and Boys... it's uber thick... I wish they could have fit a 12" screen on it, or maybe decreased the depth by like a 1/2 inch to shrink that bezel with the 11.6 inch screen...
Again, super satisfied, just a couple things that if I had to find something I would change I would... -
Kind of overkill IMHO - as it's really just a spec that they need to take the screen covering off and simply clean the inside of it.. but if it's their process to replace the entire screen - so be it..
if the dang spec was lower - say on the menu bar, etc. - I probably wouldn't even notice.. unfortunately - it's just right THERE in your face when you're browsing web sites with white backgrounds especially... that and my OCD kicks in..
In another respect - this is the most I've paid for such a small computer - so in that respect ... I feel it's warranted that the screen should be "perfect" - even *if* it doesn't OC to 1.73.. -
-
As far as the fan goes, I can hear it pop on here and there, but I'm downloading steam, installing McAffe, and messing around with the settings so I guess it should pop on here and there...
Fingerprints sure show up on the keyboard though huh? -
GRRRR, mine has shipped and they have given me a tracking number but nothing shows up on the purolator tracking page which means it has been sitting the better part of the day or they haven't updated their system yet.
I hope it's the latter hahah! -
Area-Man: What specs and price did you pay? [fellow canadian] -
Alienware M11x, Cosmic Black
Processor Intel® Core2 Duo SU7300 1.3GHz (3MB Cache)
Memory 4GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 800MHz
LCD 11.6-inch WideHD 1366x768 (720p) WLED
Video Card 1GB NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 335M
Hard Drive 250GB SATAII 7,200RPM
Nameplate Standard Nameplate
Cost $1049.00 CDN.
I got a little money off through work(not much).
lol my last Dell Laptop for college(7ish years ago when I was a computer programmer) was $2700!
But it has never had ONE problem(other then growing old) and still boots up pretty dam fast considering -
Ahh, the EPP discount. Darn... I'm planning to grab the exact same config but I really don't wanna cough up 1149
And I feel like I wanna buy some warranty which is ridiculously expensive also
What to dooo!
-
@impruv
Check out squaretrade for warranties. They are less expensive than Dell's. Use TWTYOFF to get 20% off.
Since I will be carrying this sucker around a lot, I went ahead and got the warranty with Accidental damage. Personally I think it's worth it if you plan on taking this baby out a lot. -
I just got the standard warranty. Probably dumb but I can't justify that kind of extra cash. Bit of a gamble but whateves.....I had the top of the line warranty on my old one and didn't even come close to using it.
Knowing my luck that won't happen with this one lol
I won't be traveling much with it, other then around the house and the odd road trip. Getting married and kids on the way kinda hinders the ol'road trips and vacations lol. -
I have Comcast so McAffe is free... I've never had too many issues with it, (knock on wood)
-
How is the fan noise on low draw compared to high draw gaming etc.
Also does the fan run as much with the onboard video?
And is the onboard video decent for old low demand games? Civ3, deus ex?
Thanks -
@area-man: Yea I'm a student so will be moving quite a bit. That's why I feel like I should take asus just because of their stellar warranty!
and
@the assassin: squaretrade is a no go in canada -
I'm downloading RoM right now and I'm overclocked to 1.6... The fan is now constant and seems to be on low?
When I was a 1.3 it would just pop on and off... not a big deal, but I have the radio going in the background as well... -
I reallyyyy hope the fan isn't as loud as you guy's are saying but if it is then Want to Sell my m11x lol.
-
-
hi there, first post.
Recieved my m11x today and having issues playing 1080p films, they play fine but are using 100%cpu. I bought and installed coreavc to offload the processing to the gpu but ive had no luck so far. Has anyone managed to get this working.
Thanks Tony -
For it to work you have to enable it in the core-avc decoder settings and switch to nvidia graphics.
Have you done this?
I have not yet tried it myself but the guys at hardwareheaven have tested this:

download flash beta 10.1

In CoreAVC, check the option to display the icon in the taskbar (hopefully, works in Win7). If it uses CPU, it's blue; if CUDA - green.
VLC uses built-in decoders, so CoreAVC (with or without CUDA) will be of no use. Not sure which Media Player you are talking about (Windows Media Player or MPC-HD), but you may need to tweak priority of the decoders to use CoreAVC. At least, that's how it worked in Vista. -
There seems to be a problem with the GPU and CUDA. I offloaded it using CoreAVC and KMPLayer as I do on my desktop and no luck...
It refuses to use CUDA. -
