Maybe we need to ask Darkhan or Nagshead if they could ask why they lowered the voltage and the multiplier? I'm not sure if they can give us the real answer but it can't hurt to ask? I hope the reason is not anything serious...
-
Or possibly a messed up BIOS. It's completely opposite of what should happen. 100 mV isn't going to equate to much more heat, but it can definitely lead to stability issues if the CPU is o'cd and doesn't have much headroom above stock speed.
-
Definitely will make me consider buying a Square Trade warranty...
-
Dont you need more juice to overclock in a stable way...?
Either way this is definitely something that can be updated with a new BIOS. -

Then it's all the more reason AW should've went with a slightly larger form factor. 12.1" or 13.3".
Regardless, I'm sick of feeling like I've signed up for the special olympics by ordering an AW product. My m11x is going back and I'm getting the Z.
I still have three days left to return my m17x (which I will get a full refund for, because they simply ed up), all I can say is they better get that bios fix out or I'm going to 86 that as well. It's just too much bull. -
Yea, that is what I have heard from a lot of Dell people, that the next Bios update should raise it 1.73, so perhaps it will also undo the undervolt.
-
Or someone can modify the bios....
Anyway yes you do need more juice to stabilize an OC. Sometimes even 0.01v helps. -
Sorry guys, the top part of the keyboard is covered with a protective layer. The imperfection that I thought existed is the protective layer! The adhesion on it is extremely strong. It made me thing that it was a part of the plastic being covered.
Also, pictures!

Word.
Damnit why am i still in production *tears* -
i knew it. I've struggled with those before they can be quite tight but your pics showed it was clearly the film
-
Nice pics jonjonk, I'm glad I picked Black. Thanks!
-
now im actually worried about overclocking it... it shouldve been a nonissue in the first place.
-
yea, dude. Despite it being a UBER fingerprint magnet, it still looks sexy as heck.
-
It's unfortunate that it's a finger print magnet. But is it really kind of "sparkley" black or just a glossy black. I've looked at a few pics and it's kind of hard to tell between all the different pics people are loading up. Thanks.

How do you turn off the battery? I haven't been up to par on battery things, is it bad to leave the battery charging when plugged in?
I know things have changed so you no longer need to fully charge it up your first time, but how do these new things work? -

Posted up my lunar silver pics here:

It's fn + F2. When plugged in, the battery gets charged EVEN at 100%. In the process, it ruins the battery cycle and lowers its life. By turning the battery off when plugged in, the battery will deteriorate at a MUCH slower rate. You can charge it to 100% and turn it off or, if you want the battery to last longer in its lifetime, turn it off after around 80% charged.
-
Yes, it does. It's in a good way though, as the paint is very high quality.
-
That is great to hear. Any design flaws you can notice on the chassis? Flex etc?
Thanks man. -
Im confused, i just called the order status hotline, and it says my order was shipped on 3/2, and will be delivered on 3/3.
wat.
edit. im in the states -
Are you in the states or in another country?
-
Man, even on power saving mode, this beast runs 1080p movies really well.

re: OC voltage
I noticed that CPu-Z shows 0.900 V when the CPU is at idle, under load it goes to 1.038 for 1.3GHz
Is it possible that OC screws up the increase in voltage for when the CPU is no longer idling? So it might not be an undervolting during OC issue, but a bug in the feature.. -
are you running those movies while overclocked?
-
@chew
It's not a bug. That's how clocking works. The CPU has multipliers. Voltage increases as the cpu goes up a multiplier.
@exbee
yea, it's overclocked. -
Nice - I like the gunmetal silver. No cap or mouse pad?
-
When you watch videos in youtube at 1080p its not watchable needs to be 720p
-
@home
Well, when I ran a mkv 1080p movie trailer, it ran really well. Maybe the coding is different. -
chewietobbacca Notebook Evangelist
No I know how overclocking works
I mean that the people saying they had stability issues because it was undervolted during the OC... does the voltage increase when it's running at 1.6GHz like at 1.3 GHz or is it stuck at 0.900 is what I mean. -
I ran the new Toy Story 3 one off YouTube on OC till it crahsed but before it did it lagged loads maybe by cpu?
-
jonjonk, how are you doing on OCing is it 1.6 or 1.73? I'm still confused about the current situation.
-
@home
dude, I'm really sorry. Dell seriously screwed up on your laptop
@villosa
It's actually really strange. On the windows status page, it shows 1.73. On cpu-z, it shows 1.6. I bet cpu-z is more accurate. -
Everybody is actually at 1.6 but it says it 1.73 in the windows system page
ha don't be sorry I'll get a new one soon
(1 month...)
-
I dont know if it was posted before h0M3bRew3r but are you getting a different one or just getting a replacement?
-
@jonjonk
I'll be running Everest Ultimate on my when it gets here. I don't think it gets any more accurate than that. -

Anyone know where to get a DisplayPort -> DVI adapater?
Preferably one in store, but a cheap one online is fine. I want to run some benchmarks on my 30" screen
-
It's cheaper to do HDMI -> DVI...you can find one of those in most stores, including Wal-Mart. Or, you can go to Monoprice.
-
Monoprice is awesome!
-
I'm ringing up 2morrow to hopefully get a replacement if not a full refund, as apparntly there was no alien man today to do it
-
chewietobbacca Notebook Evangelist
True, I forgot about that.
What's HDMI's max resolution? I suppose it's a moot point since I don't need it to run at 2560 x 1600, just 1920 x 1080... problem is that my 30" Dell only supports dual-link DVI so the cable doesn't even work for a VGA-> DVI adapter -
Be careful with the displayport adapters too. The ones I have seen are only compatible with single-link dvi. They have them at monoprice too btw.
-
So I was thinking about picking up an external DVD drive for mine for when I'm traveling once it gets here. Any suggestions? I looked around and saw a few external blu-ray players would those be worth it for this laptop or just in general?
Edit to add I don't have any kind of blu-ray player or hdtv right now. I'm planning to update my monitor for my desktop to an HD monitor and then eventually update the desktop to a really nice desktop as well over the next year or two. -
WOW there are so many people who overhyped themselves on this laptop.
People were excited about this thing even before we KNEW it could be OCed, now that it doesn't OC from 1.6 to 1.73 (133MHz) you are upset. We have ONE guy who is having troubles and you're calling shenanigans. Get real.
ITT: A bunch of people who thought this would be christ with a keyboard. -
Can some one please use CoreTemp as a good replacement of CPU-Z and tell us if there is any difference in the clock, voltages and multiplier.
-
chewietobbacca Notebook Evangelist
I'll run more tests once i get back from dinner -
It's always like that with higher end notebook, even more so when it's geared towards gaming...
-
You just need flash 10.1.
-
Would Dell Legitimately want to allow Over Clocking of a unit under warranty?
-
Thanks man.
-
Coretemp..
