Perfectly plausible. The 18 offers a 'Quad-Play' Raid configuration using all Sata ports - ODD removed. If you occupy all Sata ports with a drive, you don't have to raid them all in the same membership, you can create two separate raid arrays between any of the four drives.

 

Guess who's order just got cancelled...
This was the reason: The box that they use to pack the laptops with is.. get this... not available. So because of the box, they have had to cancel ALL the orders and apparently I am not the only one - which we all know by now. They say that they cannot simply add the box to the order, and that they would have to go to every order and cancel it then re order it WITH the box. Seems a bit of a joke to be honest, what has really annoyed me however is that they have only told me after I called them to ask them what is going on. Only now have they said they have had to cancel the order!


However as a bonus they are offering me a 10% discount on my 'next' aliewnare order even after I use coupons. So really I cannot complain... to wait a few extra weeks to get a nice tasty discount like that seems more than reasonable I guess.

So as far as I understand it, I get a discount from a rep, once the order goes through I forward the order number to Dell and they provide a further 10% off.

That means if I still pay £2400 second time round then get a further 10% on that, in total I will pay £2160 ($3256 USD). That is assuming I can get the same/better initial quote for £2400

 

I agree with Steve. I don't know any reason that should not work. A nice feature of the 18 should be all SATA3 6.0GB/s ports. I would do what you are describing, but I don't know (doubt it) will be offered like that from Alienware. I would use 1TB HDD like I have in my M18x R2. The down side is one less drive space is available, unless you go with something like this: SSDMR (Dual mini-SATA to SATA RAID Adapter - SATAIII). Having 5 drive bays in the M18x R2 is a nice feature. It's sad to be losing one.

 

At least you were offered some kind of discount even if it is on another order, my rep is tighter than cramp!

My 14 went into production on the 19th and is also still in production. I'm guessing that they will be shipping next week, with the 4th of July causing a bottleneck, but you never know with Friday. It would be 3 weeks so I'm cautiously hopeful.

 

Has anyone received their AW17 yet?

 

I was told mine was in late stages of production and should ship this week.

I think late stages of production means its on its way from the compal factory in china to the USA.

Kevin, we both ordered 14s with the 765, and I live a bit south of you so I'm kinda hoping mine is at the same stage they told you. I ordered 6/13. Shipping later this week would be fine by me.

I am now told that switching my order from the 17 to the 18 would delay delivery until the end of August. Can anyone confirm receiving the same report?

 

Wow, after reading all this about orders getting cancelled, I am glad I got a Clevo. However, I would take Alienware over anything at any time though. Hope everyone enjoys their machines (as soon as they arrive).

I ordered the 17. My plan was basically exactly what you said - the msata boot will have the os (as I believe AW will install it this way) and key programs and I was going to buy a 512gb ssd for steam only (got way too many games to fit on the 256gb and use the hdd for music and photos etc.

Is there a risk of damage if you move the laptop while on and it has a hdd? Or is it only if it is actually using the drive when you move it e.g. Transferring videos or something

 

Mine got "expedited" because of a few other issues i've run into. So i would not be surprised if i got my order first.

I had a BBB case and they gave me a coupon i was going to use it on my original order placed on 6-11-13, but the case was closed and no one had the coupon so i had to cancel the order. Then i placed a new one they applied the coupon then expedited it.

Colours look amazing even with bad angles. Reflections are there but not like a fully glossy screen

How come that AW 17 has the i7-4930MX i.e. the extreme version of the processor which isn't available on the DELL UK website?

 

FedEx attempted delivery of mine Wednesday, of course I'm not home until Monday though...

In the US, it appears that 4930MX is bundled with the 120Hz 3D display. The Dell Online Store: Build Your System

 

You're right its available in the US with the 120HZ panel but its not available with any AW 17 configuration here in the UK. Oh well, don't know why I am bothered I've already ordered mine, lol!

 

Just tried going back to this video now that I'm on a proper PC to watch it again... seems the user removed it. Guess too many comments on his expert unboxing and then subsequent video commentary...

I like the backpack. It looks great.

 

Ill be getting the Vindicator 17" backpack. I feel like its the best way of carrying a 10lb+ laptop. Me being a college student also made me want to buy a backpack. Ill order it as soon as I get my $100 (5% rebate) card.

 

My vindicator backpack was delivered yesterday. Great bag with loads of storage, granted mine was sent without the internal compartment separator but dell are in the process of sorting a replacement. Other than that I think it's well worth the £55 I paid

 

I'll probably order the BF3 edition Orion backpack.

 

I think they cancel it only during pre-production stage. Mine got canceled twice during pre-production (bank denied dell access to my account), but never had the same problem again during in-production stage.

 

I'll just be using a North Face backpack I've had for a year or two. Not a fan of how the Alienware ones look in the slightest.

 

I am thinking about ordering a new backpack for mine. I have the old alienware one but it's got some damage from being lugged around the US.

 

Hi everyone, apologies if this is an odd question, but I'm seeing that there's a $200 gift card promo going on right now, and it seems to only require my college name to receive. Is there any catch here? Is there other verification that I'd need to provide later on to actually receive the gift card? Just want to know what I'm in for, here.

I've tried to order with different agent over the phone and in the online chat and they all ask for the college name. 3/4 of them also request your student ID. The catch is that it cannot be combined with any coupons and the 5% rebate card (Dell Advantage bonus). When I ordered mine, my rep told me he couldn't add the student gift card because he applied a $100 coupon to my system as part of my negotiations.

 

200 off is pretty good. Turns oh though I actually might be able to throw in 2 780's in my 18!

 

So, if I placed my order online, without chat or phone interaction, it should be fine? I have my college name placed already, but I was wondering if they'd need other info after the order was placed.

Not 1 has asked a single question verifying my school membership.

1 did ask the name of the school and that was it. 9/10 will just add the discount if you just mention the word school.

I also got the 5% card on top of a coupon and student discount

 

Yea, they've never asked for my school info for both of my orders.

 

I got the 5% dell advantage, a few $100 coupons, and a few supervisor discounts. The whole thing was billed by Dell Higher Education. I'm guessing they added a school discount somehow. Never asked if I went to school.

I feel like I was tricked out of the $200 student gift card. When I ordered, my rep told me he cannot add the $200 student card promotion because it conflicts with the $100 coupon he applied to the system as well as the 5% rebate card. First he told me it cannot be combined with the 5% card so I said that i'll take the student card. After that he said it cannot be combined with the $100 coupon. Should I speak to my case manager or my rep again and try to get this added? I called a few days ago and a lady told me I have to reorder to add the student card and that it still may not be possible.
All I want is to purchase a Logitech $99 mouse and a vindicator backpack.

might be smarter to go in like your doing a brand new order, dont even bring up the old one. Say you just want to get a quote. Once u have the quote fixed to the price you want (with the discounts all together etc) then cancel your old order and place the new one. Canceling first wouldnt be wise as they can deny you a second time and then you wait even longer.

 

One person that has received theirs is not satisfied with it compared to his Orion. I have asked for photos of the things he mentions in the post.

hmmm, Mine hasn't deformed yet nor do I find it of lesser quality. The things he mentioned haven't happened to my back pack after two weeks of use.

 

To add to that, I don't think it has that much of appeal either. The Orion was really nice looking. The vindicator, just looks weird.
