I think there will be more then 2 options for the cpu, It would look a bit crappy on Dell that you only have 2 options where as all the other models have 4-5 options. I don't think there will be a i5 or i7 but i think there will be some high speed Dual cores! I just have a feeling whatever it is i will be getting the best cpu, i was going to get a Ion/Atom platform before christmas, thank god i waited!!!

@ all you guys who want an ASUS = Sorry but ASUSs are too common here. And I prefer a powerful GPU over a powerful CPU. And almost nobody has an AW.

@ azn = considered the envy. The design is just exquisite plus it would make everyone else wonder why there's a HP badge on a macbook pro but its out of my price range. $9000 for the 15 incher. Sorry but only the fat cat businessmen around here earn that much a month.

@ guy with nice observation = I have always been in the stage where I would buy the damn thing from the start of the thread to end. I call it loyalty. Hehehehe :D

@m11x = Uh.. nice name? Lol. I learnt my lesson after buying my Dell Studio without researching that it was close to a revision. Now I wait and lookie that happens. :D

I noticed that on the m15x and m17x you can have 6-8gb ram but it says that this may delay your order, i take it that this is because the 4gb ram sticks are not out yet?? i think 8gb ram in the m11x in the m11x is a bit OTT

4GB sticks are definitely out.. maybe just not in stock at the moment. but yeah 8GB ram in M11x is overkill given the CPU and GPU. 4GB max for probably 95% of people's usages with this laptop.

My home desktop lasted with 2GB for at least 2 years. So can't see why you would need 8 if your specs aren't all that jawdroppingly high.

Nuke, that would be me, who is considering the asus. I want to know how this compares to it, as I am not a heavy gamer a la alienware target market. I just want a nice computer that has good build quality, will work for what I need it to, and not have to worry about performance issues. Being an alienware and having the alienfx is just a great bonus. But I cannot decide weather that and the better graphics card is worth the smaller screen and thicker body.

I am also worried about weather the su7300 will do what I want. I have an old 1.46cpu and 2gb ram. and very often I end up waiting for applications to work, even if it is just reloading a few tabs on chrome. And this is only a 30% increase.

@chaos = nah, you're just one of many. Hehehe. Sorry if that sounded a bit harsh. I wouldn't say the SU7300 is insufficient. I use photoshop CS4 at work on an atom based desktop and have chrome, word and messenger all idling in the background on win xp at work. Soooo yeah.

EDIT: Like I said before in the thread, anything smaller than my old Studio 1537 gets a green light for consideration. Besides the m11x is smaller than my first preference the 13-inch MBP, which didn't get revised so I threw that option back out the window.

oh it wasn't too harsh. I just thought I was responsible for bringing it up.

And I am very glad to hear about your multitasking. I know my current computer sucks, but I am just afraid of underbuying.

And to be totally honest, I do love the idea of having an alienware, and the colored backlit. Not to mention a nice form factor I can just pull out and work with on the go.

But aesthetics and 'cool factor' aside, what do you think best suits my need?

If you do like stuff that can go multi-thread like those newfangled Adobe stuff, by all means get the commonplace ASUS. Wanna game without your machine feeling like it wants to cook your hand to a finger licking goodness? Get the AW. Simple as that really.

since its the same processor, this should be about the same. Asus has the instant overclock button. But AW should cool better, as it a gaming comp. So where would the video card difference come into play?

Well, my tasks are all pretty basic. MS office, instant messenger, chrome, itunes, photoshop.

Games are all just as basic. starcraft (and 2 when it comes out), theme park games, sims.

And in all honesty, these are not, and cannot be more important than my school work. But the idea of pulling this guy out is just great :D

Apart from the cpu mentioned the M11x is very cool if you whip this thing out at collage or watching a 720p movie on the train, i can tell you now people will be looking over your shoulder!

exactly. especially with the colored backlit. and you can change them so they fade to different colors. that alone is so tempting. But I also want a bigger screen, fuller keyboard, etc. The optic drive not so much, and the track pad is different on the asus. but im sure I can get used to that easily.

The GPU might not make any difference save from rendering the frames faster since you're not exactly playing any off the top games ergo Crysis on Very High. So the ASUS seems a more prudent choice given the CPU, which might be more important in your case. Unless a senior forumer proves me wrong and explains how a better GPU would help you. Which I don't mind :D

EDIT: I've used a netbook with a 10 inch screen. This m11x owns that by a mile. And just grab an external when you want to photoshop and stuff

right. but the thing is, i like laptops so i can be mobile. even if it is to sit on my bed, or go to a common area, just to be on my computer and still be mobile. so thats where a bigger screen will make more sense, so I can work anywhere and be truely useable. instead of working, but needing an external screen to do mundane tasks like writing papers (imagine scrolling up and down all the time. especially with 16x9 now. eek

I typed thousand word essays with that ol' 10 incher. So I wouldn't worry about screen size. But thats just me. Plus it helped me appreciate the once-small 15 inch square LCDs they used at my old college.

@ghegde = Most people are just waiting for the iX. DX11 isn't exactly big at the moment. Last time I checked the only game that used it was DiRT 2.

i wont, just because i dont need the upgrades, and it will only be coming out much later (late Q2?).

sadly, i will probably go with the asus. as much as i want the cool factor of the alienware.

I guess it comes down to how much i need the screen size on the go. If I only need the 11, then it will be fine. And an external monitor for when I need to sit down and get to work on papers or photos. After all, it would be best to work at the desk, and not the bed or anywhere else, right? I mean I still could, but for best posture, I would be at the desk with the big screen.

But a 14-15 thin and light would always have that size, where ever I am. No need to worry about a monitor or eye strain. But if it is that big all the time (both more less the same thickness to me) would I ever get sick of having to pull that out, when the aw would remain cooler, and easier to keep on my lap, as it is smaller?

I keep trying to convince myself of going for both. Whenever I think of the differences, I see how they could benefit me more.

you'll get sick of the 15 inchers soon. Not the most pleasant things to be carrying around. Its just absolutely humongous compared to an 11 inch. I used to spend an hour in a bus going to and back from college, with a 15 inch, there was no way I could use it on the bus, but with my 2140 and the 10 inch screen, felt just right on my lap with enough clearance from the seat in front of me to stop worrying about the metal getting scratched.

I've have had a Dell Studio and a Sony Z thats fried my hands before. Plus since the m11x is built with gaming in mind, the design should emphasize on cooling the thing instead of looking like something a businessman should pull out of his sleeve. Some laptops might have specs sufficient for gaming, but it doesn't mean the chassis is built to support such a strain on the system.

Is your primary need gaming? Or is it having the best notebook for college? I posted in your other thread, this Alienware will just be another 11" laptop once the novelty has worn off. I realize you want to get in on the excitement and all but think you should take a step back and think about what you really want to use the laptop for. It's nice to have the shiny new thing every once in awhile, but they don't stay shiny and new forever, make sure whatever you buy you will be happy with once the novelty factor is gone.

    Cheers m8

M8, with all due respect, you have not even seen an 11x in person nor touched one, nor turned one on. You have no idea wether it will "fry your hands" or not. I enjoy your enthusiasm and all but let's not get carried away here to the point where you are trying to convince anyone and everyone that everything besides the Alienware sucks...because that's just not true and you know it.

No offense intended but you are getting a bit carried away here, the guy's primary needs are a laptop for college not a gaming netbook :)

Regarding streaming hulu in 720p, ive read reviews of owners of an asus ul30a who have stated that they can stream vids just fine (the ul30 has the su7300 and integrated graphics)

So im just wondering how its possible for the m11x to be unable to do the same..

I'm aware that they had flash 10 installed instead of 10.1, but I'm not really sure how much of a difference it would make if the program is offloading the processing power to the integrated 4500HD... just wonderins

bluehaze speaks truth in terms of functionality. Gaming is up there for me, 1st or second, but I also want the ability to be portable w/ battery life and web browse. I WANT an i5 b/c it's newer tech and I'm all about that, but I hardly ever encode videos or anything other than gaming in terms of performance usage.. the Envy draws me b/c of the new tech but I don't think I'll really utilize it all. The M11x keeps drawing me back in although I keep thinking I may be blinded by the awesomeness of it lol

No matter how badazz the Envy is(and yes its badazz 5830 gpu >>>> 330m) Ive been scared off from ever buying it after reading far too many upset owners complaints of this laptop. A disturbingly high ratio of Envy 15 owners complain of overheating, cpu throttling, reliability, etc........

so still that is in the running with the asus line and the m11x. that has newer tech. possibly a better screen (i may not get the better gpu/screen and save money). but heavier and short battery life.

    M11x has a 11.6' screen !!!

    I mean...u keep comparing it with 13'3 and even 15'6 !!
2in is far tooo much intenal space for hardware upgrade!
    u cant compare it to a 13'3' !

Thing is..it the smallest yet powerful gaming laptop.
If you really want firepower, go get a 15'6 or 17' !

m11x is supposed to be tiny and playable, not a ultimate gaming laptop.
