My HD4650 can run a lot of stuff on high, except TF2, which crashes in fullscreen mode. ahahahah. Don't worry mate, God's a nice guy, if not with a crude-ish sense of humour.![]()

More than likely get the first one!
I have the DELL/AW order page as a bookmark.... lol
Yeah!
We need some gaming and benchmark numbers.
Playing CRISIS on a netbook....that's insane!
TF2...
People still play that...lol
Kidding great game -
As far as I know most ULV chips are soldered to the MOBO so upgrading is out of the question.
Trust me I hope AW does the right thing and has it held in place like a regular CPU.
Hopefully AW has some sort of over clocking feature for the CPU but I'm sure if it doesn't us forums members will figure something out.
Programs like SetFSB will be really popular, just gotta figure out the PL number
Gotta go to work(Man!)
Just a couple of days away, couple more days..... -
@ IKAS = This thread and the alienware m11x page has overtaken engadget and facebook on my most visited list. So yeah. And yes I still play TF2, can't wait till they give those poor engies something lol.
@Ray = We believe you man, don't let us all down alright? -
I have had the G Series and the Thinkpad series. The G stands for god awful. Motherboard and LCD died within the first 6 months.. The Thinkpads are rock solid. Have had a T61p for over 2 years and it still runs great.
-
Agreed Nuke. And as such you can forget simple things like driver updates.
My current Z 750 (Being sold as I type this) has had the same drivers since it was new, Sony sucks at keeping things up to date. Just TRY and change your OS or go from 32 to 64bit on any current Z... -
This might be a shameless bump, but I really cannot wait for this laptop. I currently have an old BlackBook C2D 2.0 ghz and I miss my gaming. The biggest draw for me is the ability to use my AT&T data plan as a wireless connection by just plugging my SIM card in.
If I were to get this, I would undoubtedly dual boot a distro of Linux. Has anyone had any experience putting something like Ubuntu on a new M17x or M15x? -
I see it in this video that it's a fingerprint magnet. Hoping that might not be the case...

how would this compare to something with similar specs, like the asus ul80vt? not for intense gaming, but for college (music, papers, internet, photoshop, and some light gaming on the side)? they both cost about the same.
-
I found the M11x while I was looking over the UL30vt (comparable to the UL80vt) and personally it doesn't compare. It may be gaudy but the keyboard is back-lit and the processor should be higher than the UL30/80 (I think they're both 1.66ghz overclocked). The build quality is also much better if you look at the trackpad and the trackpad keys. The only thing that the UL line currently beats it at is the screen size but if you're into ultraportables this laptop is perfect.
If you're looking at the UL80vt, try researching the UL30jt. It's a bit of an upgrade and should cost the same. -
my brother-in-law has the ul80vt and loves his. Its got a bigger footprint than the m11x. the ul80vt will get better battery life (8 hrs real world) plus its got the internal dvd drive. performance wise you wouldn't really see a difference except for gaming and photoshop. they both have the C2D ulv processor and similar other specs except the m11x will have a much better graphics card in it.
hope that helps
-
Hi i'm a bit confused i have been reading the form for weeks now and i can't wait for the release but there was talk about the M11x won't come with a intel i3 or i5 because the i3 dosn't exist and the i5 is not on the market yet, but why can i order a m15x on Dells site with a i3 or a i5?
Anyone seen that South park epsiode when Cartman is waiting for the Wii to be released?? I'm just like that! lol -
I was confused about this myself untill I realised that the m15x/m17x are shipping with the standard voltage cpu's while the m11x would need the Ultra Low Voltage processors which everyone(OEMs) is still waiting on.
hope that helps -
as for the UL80vt series: yeah, the trackpad is a bit weird with a dimpled surface that takes a bit of getting used to, but you do get used to all the same
-
I see that would explain it...........Sh*t!!
Well whatever the cpu is it is still going to be better then the Nvidia Ion/Atom package
-
that's what the asus UL30JT will use... nvidia ION 2... wich is a 310M VGA... that's why asus will have so lower performance compared to M11X is not even a competitor in my opinion...
-
So between the asus ul series, the 30 is an upgrade of the 80? and the website says they have the same hardware, but the 80 is the 14" screen. I guess I am pretty open to screen size (hence looking at this). External monitors are quite cheap, so that takes care of any size problem (as long as the screen size is acceptable when im not plugged in).
Would it be too much for any of you to look at my what to buy thread, and see what would be best for me- a small thing like this, a bigger thin and light like the ul, or something more featured?
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=454198&page=3 -
It seems like portability is important for you since you'll be taking it to and from places at school. The M11x is roughly 4 lbs and thicker than the UL30/80vt but not as wide/long. Personally this is better for me because I can't handle wider laptops. Since you'll be on the move, battery life will also be an issue. The UL30vt has a much longer battery life but will not be as powerful graphics-wise. If you don't mind plugging it in every 4 hours, the M11x would be better. If you don't want to be tied down to a power outlet as much, I would recommend finding an Asus UL-model at Best Buy or something and testing out the build quality. You might not be bothered by the trackpad and buttons as much as I was.
You expressed an interest in a backlit keyboard in your thread. This sealed the deal for me: I've been in so many situations where I've needed to bend my screen down a bit to type (I'm not a bad typer, I just code a lot so it can get annoying when I can't see the screen). Knowing that I can adjust the color of the backlight is just more icing on the cake.
Hope this helps you decide. I came from pretty much the same situation as you: I use my laptop for work and school but I still want to be able to game with a couple of friends. This seems like the best laptop for the price with my needs. -

ASUS has built in overclocking software for the ul30/80vt's, how do you think OC'ing will be on the m11x? If it's the same chip, with better cooling, this should be fairly OC'able no?
My ul30vt runs at 1.73 GHZ according to cpuid. -
Dell did have a XPS laptop that was overclockable about a year ago, but i really can't see it for the M11x
-
It would be a lie to say I am not totally excited about the backlit keyboard/ zones (trackpad, speakers, buttons like the bigger brother?) and in multiple colors/effects.
I always like higher resolution screens, but i have had a wxga for the past 2+years. So I am kind of used to it, and any 720p screens would be fine. So that justifies this.
The aw is .3" thicker? and obviously the width/depth would differ. I have a backpack that can hold up to 15" in its sleeve. So either one would work.
Optic drive is useless to me. I can always use a friends/library computers to read/burn disks.
How easy is it to work on such a small screen? if anyone knows. Gaming would be sims, starcraft, and theme park games. So the aw may be overkill? What would I benefit more from, instant oc, or a better video card? -
The real question is, will the M11X be able to play 'Plants vs. Zombies'?
JK
I can't wait for this computer! -
Sims should be fine as the game usually runs at 800x600 I'm pretty sure the theme park games are native 800x600 as well. starcraft should be fine, but you will get more screen realestate with the higher resolutions which will make it easier to play
-
I love that game! the last roof level was the hardest!
-
it will handle pacman for sure, no worries
-
Will this be able to play Team Fortress 2 maxed out, or is it too CPU intensive?
-
Maybe it can since TF2 has multi-core support.
-
I'm sure that this wont be able to play BC2. It meets the minimum GPU requirements (x1600 pro), but the minimum CPU is a Core 2 Duo E4400. The E4400 is clocked at 2.0GHz with a passmark score of 1159 while the SU7300 has a score of 993. And thats only the minimum; the required is a quad core processor.
-
Will it be able to handle oblivion? That just popped into my head. Its pretty old doe a game. It recommends the GeForce 6800 series card. As well as 3ghz Pentium or better.
If not, then it isint the end of the world. It would just be nice.
How will this compare to the asus? faster (bigger gpu) or cooler (better cooling)? -
Oh, please, don't say that.
-
I'm not so sure about that... I've been playing BC2 for the past few days and the game seems like its more GPU bound than CPU...
But I guess we won't know until someone actually plays it on the m11x... -
well my machine in my sig can play tf2 pretty much maxed at a 1440 by 900 res, so im sure that the m11x can handle the same settings if not better. You shouldnt worry about it.
-
If you read through this thread you can see that the members have gone through the 5 stages of grief. Denial (of the lousy processor), Anger (directed at Alienware for using a lousy processor), Bargaining (searching the internet for alternative processors that this machine might have), Depression (realizing that you wont be able to play all the games you wanted too on this machine, and that there is no use for the 335m if its being bottlenecked the the CPU), and finally Acceptance ( actually I don't think were at this stage yet)
-
lol gee-gee, I think I'm at the part where since the day is almost here, I've begun to look around at my options. I started looking at the HP Envy 15, I know those aren't even in the same class, but it's thin and just a tad bit heavier, and if I waited out another couple weeks I could afford one with i5 and 5830 which is believed to be better than the 335m. Sigh I dunno, the i5 looks appealing since it's current gen tech. Still leaning toward M11x, but I want to make sure my bases are covered. Any other thin/light powerful computers out there I should look into sub $1300?
-
Haha, brilliant observation
-
I seem to have the exact opposite conclusion... I think it is VERY cpu dependant than GPU... on my Asus, with a T9300 and 260mGTX, I struggle to get enjoyable performance without some tweaks, and it doesn't even heat up my GPU, which means its not pushing it hard at all. But, when I overclock the cpu from 2.5 up to 2.9, things get a bit better. Overclocking the GPU makes no difference, and changing graphics settings makes very little difference. Seems very CPU heavy to me.
Which, I must say, doesn't look good for the m11x and BC2. But, we'll see. -
I'm at the final stage, actually. XD Sure,I might have joined the 'Zomg i5!' or 'WHY DELL WHY' outcries but no matter what happens,I'll be here refreshing the Dell page like insane when it ticks Feb2,and I'll be getting it there and then for sure.
-
I'm finally at the acceptance stage. I've accepted the fact that they've used a lousy processor and I'm prepared to wait until they release this thing with a ULV i7-640UM.
-
why are people comparing a 11.6' to a 13.3' or even a 15.6' ??
at least for me, what im trying to decide is:
more powerful (and bigger, heavier) x ultra-portable (gosh, its 11.6!!!!) but less powerful.
4 inches is sooo much (from 11 to 15)!
since i have a pc for gaming, and don't leave home so often, i may stick to the m11x.
mainly i will use it for work (photoshop, illustrator) but i do want to be able to play games on it whenever i want.
but everytime i say to myself: "ill buy a m11x", i start thinking of other more powerful (and in this case 15') laptops to buy, so i really can play almost anything. -
envy's get really really really hot though, expecially where you place your hands to type and stuff. someone on the forum also told me that the placed it in their backpack after closing it (still on, he had it so it wouldn't shut off when closed) and it shut off after like 7-10 minutes cuz of the heat, got so hot the computer had to shut off, and he says the bag was empty and roomy. just search for some stuff about em.
-
I haven't read through pages ~30-80 but could anyone link me to where it says they're only using the CD2 (I assume that's what you're upset about)?
Last I saw they said the CD2 was an optional processor but there was no word of another. -
@Thorpe24
I thought that was when they were using the quad core i7's, they have the much more restrained i5's now. -
I went from the denial to the grief to the acceptance. But that last stage was a true epiphany, as I realized I probably don't need core i, as this computer probably wont last the 4 years of college, but more likely 2 or 3. Hence I am looking at cheaper sub 1k solutions.
It is between this, some asus ul (not sure if the 20, 30, 50, 80, or whatever series). They have more screen real estate and battery. But the aw has better graphics (does that benefit me?), backlit, and fx. it just looks cooler. :/ -
Yes i agree and never understand why they wanted to compare 11.6 to 13.3? they REALLY never understand dell made the sweet M11x for high ended gaming or working or heavy video edit as purpose. Dell offer M11x for $800 better than sony computers..
-
yeah I'm also eyeballing the i5 now with 5830.. although 15" is def a lot bigger than 11" lol but it's thin and decent form factor.
-
Man, I hope this thing will run mass effect 2, I was just looking at the system requirements. 1.8ghz Intel Core 2 Duo...
Then again, crysis requires a 2.8ghz cpu and it can run on the m11x...
So maybe I should not be worried. lol -
So this is coming out tommorow?
-
No...
but i could be wrong
-
"Sometime February" was their answer. So while maybe, the common dates I have heard are 2nd, 3rd, or in the middle of the month.
Only time will tell. So just keep on refreshing this page and dell, and when they do, sparks will fly and this thread will burst into excitement. -
mass effect 2 .... LOL the fps drop below 30fps every now and then on my 360 ! m11x has no chance!
come on guys, the only video evidence we have seen shows it strugling with L4D2. we all need to be more realistic on the performance of a 11" laptop.
bring on the benchmarks but lets not set our expectations to high.
