lol you can see the front speaker cover....
just wait and see
why would they kill the newer laptop (m17x)? when they just axed the m9750 they could have put the m17x there and put the new one right where the m17x is now.... but no they completely took it off. Now what does that tell you -
There may be an updated version of the m17x with new hardware, no one knows but I guarantee you the laptop in that picture is not it. -
that laptop is it .....
even if it wasnt the same thing they would have kept the m17x on the side as a Nvidia option to the m17. just like they did with the m9750
the m9750 was the weakest so why cut 2 laptops? they had 3 17 inch'ers they cut m9750 and the m17x now they only have one. So the allpowerful will be one ...( i cannot remember the last time AW had only a ATI 17 inch as their main computer).
you can remold plastic -
Maybe it will be 2 different sizes... or 3
-
I have done a little research on the Alienware models before I settled with NP8662. What I have learned about m17x is that it is a pretty stable model with minimum issues (or no issues at all). But there can be reasons other than a "refresh" for axing m17x.
1- It is a veryyy expensive model with a veryyy outdated hardware. It might still be able to perform like a beast when configured with higher-end components, which makes it much more expensive. An average consumer like me who want an Alienware laptop and does not have $2000 + to spend will not go for an m17x - either I would settle with an m17 with xfire or a decently configured m15x which is reasonably priced now.
2- To simply put it this way, those who are able to spend $$$$ will not go for m17x once the new "All-Powerful" machine comes out.
Because of these reasons and maybe a couple more, Alienware might have foreseen a lack of sales for m17x and axed it. Also they can keep the speculations (and expectations) alive by doing this now!
Again I can be wrong ... We can all keep speculating for 13 more days, until one or more among us will be proved wrong (or correct) ! -
well said but i still disagree
but agree that the m17x was a failure due to being overpriced <blink>(crap)</blink> -
On a lighter note, another reason for discontinuing m17x (other than "refresh") can be the difficulty for Alienware (or Dell) to configure and sell 4 or more laptops at the same time, considering their closed down (or closing down?) facilities and trimmed down workforce!
This is not exactly the right time for them to offer a vast variety of choices and customer service.
Anyway, since m17x is a success of its own kind, it will be quite natural if Alienware decides to inherit some "properties" of m17x in their new machine - I would'nt mind as long as the inherited property is "overpricing". Still, I would love to see a fresh and innovative chassis design as the Skullcaps and Ripleys have been around for a while (even though they are still the coolest designs, atleast in my opinion).
-
no because dell killed or is killing slowly its xps series like the 1730
AW will be Dells only gaming series soon -
Note: that's only half sarcasm...if they could squeeze dual GPUs (40-nm) in a 16.4" I would totally jump on it. -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
I dont think that would be possible, unless they were two lower end cards
, I mean look at their M17, alot of people are having stuttering problems and overheating issues... If a M17 can't house 3870's without a hitch, then a 16" would be too under equipped
-
The M17 is having stuttering problems because the CPU heatsink can't cool a Quadcore and the Northbridge...and the reason it can't house two 4870s (it can run 3870x2 fine) is because it has a worthless subwoofer in the way of a needed second GPU fan.
The problem stopping two GPUs in a 16.4" frame is the physical size of the PCBs. -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Oh I thought it was due to the heat being outputted by the GPU's to the Northbridge... So it is the CPU that caused the Motherboard to heat up and "constrict" (ahhh what's the word I'm looking for) the Motherboard, thus causing stuttering... am I understanding this right

Ahhhh, look what I found somebody highlighted the key area!

Where did you "find" that?
-
note to moderator: can you guys clean up some of the mulitple threads about the pictures. I think there are 3 or 4 different threads about them going around. Some information is being lost between threads. thanks -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Yeah you are right, becuase I did some pictures, where I used photoshop to change contrast, brightness, gama, color levels... etc... and as far as I could get without bleaching it was to the edge of the keyboard..
Here's a few I did

I would not be surprised of "All Powerful" is not one, but two laptops. After all, Alienware just cut two models from their site, which leaves just enough room on the notebooks page for, say, two new models.
Now, if that were true, then my optimistic side is hoping for another 15" laptop. A new 15" would allow them to phase out the m15x and the poor reputation that it has picked up. As long as they keep the smart bay. -
I'm hoping for an m15x2 myself
-
Guys, i was on ATI/AMD news and todays posts.
Quad-displays = sweaty-palmed excitement
The FSC Graphics Booster with ATI XGP™ technology offers an unbeatable combination of desktop-class graphics power, ATI CrossFireX technology-enabled, and multi-display support. Thin-and-light notebook users can now have it all - mobile computing when you need it, multi-monitor productivity when you want it, and ATI CrossFireX graphics performance when your in-game survival depends on it. Check out some early reviews on We Got Served and here Notebookcheck.com
Watch this space for more notebook PC gaming, because I’m planning to take the awesome Alienware M17 for the ultimate test drive!
Cheers!

Could they be using XGP tech on the new AW? -
That blog is from Jan 22, 2009. At the time the M17 was the most powerful machine using ATI cards (dual 3870). He probably upgraded to the MSI GT725 or the ASUS W90 in March when they were released.
-
Every time I see you saying "17X Premier", "The laptop they were riding on", "The new laptop is a refresh of the 17X". I just LMAO!!!
I'm glad you KNOW all this.
Keep it up bro, it brightens my day. -
We are no longer looking at a Montevina set up when Mac can stick a Nehelam in their 17incher. How do you think the rest of the community feels?
You either compete or get stepped on. That means you need 64/quad all the way. -
Yup,
1066mhz memory is almost yesterdays news, 800mhz is old, 667 isn't even in the ballpark.
Alienware is waaay overdue for an upgrade in both the 15" and 17" departments.
I guess we'll find out in about 11 more days!
EDIT: My bad, 13 days and change. -
You mean 13 days and 15 hours -
Step away from the fissure in space/time.
13 days 15 hours and change. June 2nd. -
What's your countdown to? -
we shall see captain i just believe in myself
-
I'll be going to Switzerland and later to Lebanon.
I think I am going to be really busy and miss the announcement. -
-
I was just realizing, it's funny how cheap a fully decked out m15x is now (with new lappies on the horizon, it makes sense). I configured what used to be a $3500 configuration, it's now about $2400. Pretty sweet deal if you don't mind the ever so slightly outdated parts. Anywho, I'm holding out for the new notebooks of course, just thought it was interesting
-
Yeah,
They pretty much all start out that way and get cheaper the longer they're around.
It's the nature of the beast. -
i just got the email for the m17 price drop....not a good sign
-
I guess that's to be expected Halo, since the new rigs will be here soon.
-
I hope that the price drop signals that the countdown is for the actual release and not just an announcement for the laptop.
-
The way Alienware has dropped two of the four laptops in it's line-up, and reduced the prices of the remaining two, indicates to me that the new rigs are just around the corner.
IMO, you're going to see something new, not just a refresh.
Tic toc, tic toc, tic toc.............................   -
I agree with you Rob. I wouldn't be surprised if the m15x and m17 get removed. I think it's a new line-up is what we will be looking at in the coming days.
-
Yeah but they may keep a couple of the older models hanging around for a while so there are budget options.
I think we will be getting new laptops too. -
there will be and some new ones
i do agree that there will be both
-
They got it down to one not long ago so having them all go would not be a surprise.

@Don,
It was originally my plan to upgrade to 4870's w/DDR5 on my M17 so I could use the 3870's in my M9750.
We can keep our fingers crossed. -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
that's what i'm doing but my fingers are beginning to hurt. i'm selling my cards..... i already have someone for the master and i have to look for someone for my slave.
-
It might be easier to sell that way. Then it could be used in either slot. -

i've tried trust me it doesnt work. it is a slow progress but someone with more knowlegde then me is also working on it.

Sorry to hear that.
Good luck Don. -
! Better they ditch it and come up with a new 15" design. Sorry to say this, as m15x is the best 15" I have known with balanced power and looks. Its a pity Alienware failed to make it a problem-free notebook even after 1 year from its release.
-
Every manufacturer has had it's "troubles" from time to time.
Let's hope Alienware did a good job on the soon to be released next generation. -
to be honest, the picture makes it look very thick. i'm in the boat for something the size of 15x. my fingers are crossed for that. my 2cents.
