    Yup,

Cuda, PhysX, no CPU dependency, a manufacturer that will actually do mobile driver updates.

lol, I'm not a "fanboy" of either. But with the current crop of cards i can really see the benefits of Nvidia right now.

I want the best cards out there and part of that for me is good driver support.

I don't know if ATI mobile drivers just plain suck or something, but I'm totally happy with my HD4870's drivers. They gave a nice boost in 3dMark06.

    @aznofazns,

Unfortunately, ATI has agreed to provide OEM's with drivers, rather than to update drivers that mobile ATI owners can download.

That's why if you want to update your GPU drivers you have to Mob mod them to work.

Your post says you don't have a laptop so you may not have been aware of this.

The GTX280M they've been testing in the Sager forums is scoring about equal to the 4850 in the MSI GT725 in synthetics. About 12.3K '06 Marks and about 6K GPU Vantage each with overclocks last I checked.

and the 06 results for the 4870 I've seen show it getting just over 10k.

I don't see how that's possible, that's implying that the 4870 is slower than the 4850.

Either way you slice it, IMO, a couple of Nvidia cards would be the better choice from a business standpoint and better for many, many customers.

I'm not even talking about better driver support that mobile users get from Nvidia.

Both the 3870's and the 4870's are very CPU dependent. This has been shown many times in this forum and in the asus W90 owners lounge.

It's not just benches either. FPS with these ATI cards are directly related to CPU speed.

Not a problem if you're one of the people who has a top of the line processor, but many, many people can only get a midrange or lower processor which will equal less gaming performance.

That's why I believe Nvidia would be the better choice.

EDIT: That may all change with the next gen of GPU offerings and I hope it does.

Some of these scores are absurdly low... for instance, the HD4870X2 scored only 13K. My stock desktop HD4870 with CPU at 2.4ghz scores 13K.

well before you say that you have to say which card you are talking about. the 3870 and the 48xx series are different form each other.

one big thing is that we don't have ati overdrive. also the 48xxx isn't as cpu dependent as the 38xxx series.

nvidia believes the gpu should which is why they bought phyx. which does a good job on games.

so far for me a change from t9400 @2.53 and qx9300 at 3.2ghz is 0 difference in gaming performance. farcry2 is the only game that it made a differnce in. other games haven't showed me a difference atleast in benchmarks. real game performance is diffent.

the reason why ati is crap is because of there driver support. i know many people say that drivers can only improve only so much. then why when nvidia moved to the big bang 2 and then dox there was a big difference in performance and it just keeps increasing. no only that when i have a nvidia card. i couldn't keep track of all the drivers they had.

ati on the over hand release drivers every month and it doesn't improve much for a month of develop. nvidia comes out with drivers about every 2 weeksfrom what i see. and about 5 different ones each release(ok maybe 2) but ok here is the list from what i can gather and what i see

    8.5 crap
8.10 last overclock for us and don't forget we don't have overdrive, crap
8.12 great improvement for e-wrecked's help and dna.
    9.1 some dx10 improvement.
9.2 less cpu dependent but crap
9.3 even les cpu dependent but crap
9.4 i haven't seen nothing in these drivers
9.5 why is this still on my computer???

in order to get performance and quality you have to tweak them yourselfs andif you don' know what your doing then your screwed. i'm sorry to say this to ati but they need more help. i like there low prices and competative at that but come on!!!!!!!

also ccc is garbage. i don't want to explain why it just is.

    Apples and oranges.

We are discussing laptop GPU's in this laptop forum.

EDIT: So true dondadah88, with ATI we are left out in the cold. The driver support afforded to Nvidia mobile users is a huge plus. Driver support for ATI's mobile users is nonexistant.

In this case, it's more like apples and slightly smaller apples (dumb analogy but it gets the point across). Again, there is virtually no difference between the desktop and mobile HD4870's other than clock speeds. Mobile HD4870X2 should dominate a desktop HD4870.

Yeah I think it's time to go back to the original topic...

    Stock.

As Moo said they're the same GPU with different clocks....but you can break the OC limits on the ATI utility and bring both cards up to the same clock rates. At max clocks they're performing at the same level as the GTX 280M in synthetics.

What is really supposed to be separating the cards is GDDR3 for the 4850 and GDDR5 for the 4870.

Just go to the Asus W90 owners lounge aznofazns,
Tose guys with the dual 4870 are getting high 14k low 15k stock so it's not that unbelievable that a single MOBILE 4870 gets a little more than 13K.

    Moving on.

    Sry for the double post.

Right, the scores for all the cards are on the low side.

If you want to discuss this further maybe we can start a different thread or better yet you can just pm me if you want. I don't think it's fair for us to argue about this in the wrong thread.

    Anyway.........back to topic.

Seeing the new picture has kind of got me scared that they're going back to the gaudy/tacky style of old. The first thing I noticed about the m15x was that it looked much better than anything they had ever released.

Back to Rob's photo, I personaly believe that this is the BACK that we are looking at, and that it is upside do. Look at the corners above the lights. You can see little pill shaped things that look like rubber laptop feet.
Also look closer to the edge and you will see lines as if two pieces of the frame are connected at this point. This would make sence if this is the bottom pannel that could come off.
The last thig that tells me this is upside down is because if you look at the bottom ridges, and then flip the picture, you start getting the outline of what the rippley design would look like.
So what this picture really tells me is that there are still lights for the exhaust, the rippley/skullcap design, or its derivation, are still there, and that there are again no ports on the back, which sucks. :)

Then again, could be completely wrong, as I can now see the mousepad. shucks, now I have to go gessing all over again :p

Or maybe that since the M17 is still available, they are just upgrading to the powerhouse 18.4" market... I think they have realized they have a great 17" with the M17, but they need a larger laptop to square off against Clevo and Asus
