Downside of the exposed die is by the time you've reapplied your paste and heatsink a few times the mirror shine on the top will probably be scratched to *"^£! XD

no not at all. not if you are careful and use the plastic cc like i said. if you start scraping it clean then yeah.. do not use ANYTHING on it besides the alcohol and a clean paper towel or lint free cloth
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I just use arctic cleaner (acetone and alcohol) and paper towels cut into 2"x2" squares
-
It's not that it's difficult as much as it's something you have to do correctly or there are dire consequences!
-
scook that works just fine. you really dont even need the arctic cleaner.. i use a bit of polish to remove any of the old discolorations from the old compound. as5 has a tendency to discolor the copper..
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I like the arctic cleaner, it is idiot proof for me haha. Part 1 - the remover (acetone) works great for removing adhesive gunk from stickers or tape too
I also like to use a q-tip and put a lot of pressure when cleaning with the acetone because it seems to really clean out the copper well when it is a rougher finish (not polished that is)
I probably put ALOT more effort than is practical into cleaning and prepping stuff for the TIM, but hey, can't hurt right -
Ok - now I'm a bit concerned. I ordered this thing on 8/6 and it shows an estimated ship date of 8/10. It still hasn't shipped. I'm trying to decide if I want to call or open up the online chat to see what the status is. If this whole thing was a price glitch (which I doubt really since they would've fixed it after the first several orders) I don't want it to get killed.
Hmmmmm... -

try the online chat. they generated a ticket for me which seemed to speed things up

And no I dont use anything on CPUs beyond paste, TIM remover and clean paper towel either. -
I just upgrade my laptop with the qx9300, i used Ice Diamond paste and seem to work fine. As i bought mine from ebay, i did some checking on the cpu, my system says its qx9300 cpu and the clockspeed is right. However when i went to device manager, under processors and it shows that i have 4 cores and they are:
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8400 @ 2.26GHz
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8400 @ 2.26GHz
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Extreme CPU Q9300 @ 2.53GHz
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Extreme CPU Q9300 @ 2.53GHz
I thought it should be
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Extreme CPU Q9300 @ 2.53GHz
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Extreme CPU Q9300 @ 2.53GHz
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Extreme CPU Q9300 @ 2.53GHz
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Extreme CPU Q9300 @ 2.53GHz
I be most grateful those with QX9300, if you can do a me favour and confirm what you see device manager under processors. Thank you i need to resolve this with the supplier as to whether this chip is genuine or not.
with regards to the removing the paste, the supplier of the ice diamond recommended nail varnish remover, i checked they all dont have acetone was wondering any commerical thinners will remove the paste, i used the artic cleaner which i had for a while. I figure if i spend a few hundred dollars or pounds in my case on the processor spending a few more on the cleaner is not much. But the sore point is when i ordered the ice diamond the cost of postage is more then i paid for the ice diamond paste. hehe thought you might like a good lauh on me.

^ what he said, I just had to do this last night, upgrading my htpc from an e7200 to a q9550
-
-
I really hope they don't end this great deal, I'm still hoping to order one soon
-
I did it and thank you very much for the tip. Puts an end to the issue with the seller seems he comes out okay. Let me knwo if any one wants a qx9300 supplied in the Uk i can now recommend my supplier, its post free no tax for £400.
-
On a different subject, how do you find windows 7. I used the beta and found it quote stable, but I could get my disk cloner work for backup purposes. hate system rebuilds takes liek a day to get it to the level the way i liked it
-
Same thing happened to me, just delete the processors in device manager and reboot. Windows will install the correct ones on restart.
-
I love it xD -
Hah! Glad to hear it

I was reading about how to apply thermal paste...then noticed instead of paste, it said "Thermal Grease".
Researched it a tad more, and found theres a difference between the two, and its not just another way of saying paste xD
Would I need to apply grease as well? or just the paste -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
it is either/or
Grease is the cheap white crap that everyone adds for free with coolers (in the desktop world) Get some good paste (silver based is popular)
I prefer OCZ Freeze -
I thought most people recommended that..I'm unsure now -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I used to use AS5, it is just messier and harder to deal with. OCZ freeze gets pretty much same results but easier to deal with
people also say it is not electrically conductive and needs no burn in, but those are pretty much moot points to me personally -
-
Hmmnnn...I'll have to look into OCZ. I have always been an AS5 user, and for some reason when swapping out my last couple of procs I have applied it in a thin line down the center of the die, then place the copper heat sink on at a 45 degree angle, rotated, and then screwed in, and never had a problem with either mess or faulty cooling. I can't for the life of me remember where these instructions came from, but in my experience they work great and give solid results. But as I've got a few days for the beast to arrive, might as well look into alternatives.
Thanks for the info everyone. -
Found these instructions on the OCZ website concerning their paste:
"NO SPREARDING IS NECESSARY!
1. Place a small amount of Freeze (roughly the size of a grain of rice) on the center of the IHS.
2. Lower the CPU cooler directly down onto the CPU to minimize smearing, and push it gently into place (no spreading required).
3. If necessary, the CPU cooler can be wiggled slightly to facilitate the initial spreading of the thermal compound.
It may appear that only a fraction of the heat spreader has paste installed, but the cooler will squeeze the paste out to the appropriate width over time."
So with the Freeze you don't spread?...what would happen if I did? xD -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
no need to because it is so thin compared to AS5. That is why it is easier to work with and why i like it. AS5 was always a mess for me, because it is so thick and strings out
-
the3vilGenius 3vil knows no fear
I live in belguim, where would be a good place for me to get a QX9300?
-
lol i have spoke with head tech and engineer at ocz and they recc you spread it. ill inform them of the web site. i personally recc it to be spread and i use freeze all the time i go through about a dozen tubes or more a month lol..
-
I should look up ebay and see. My contact can supply you one as well, as it is in the UK all tax are paid just over 400 euros. I am not making a profit from this in case your thinking.
With reference to paste for the heat sink, I am using ice diamond, the manufacturer offered free paste for a proper review by this forum. I did not get it for free when and bought it. Seems to work, i had the qx9300 installed and no issues or jitters as mentioned in the forum. I put it on on thursday and no a single issue hhe well so far. I did have laptop on for about 3 to 4 hours and switch off to allow the material to bond and seems to cool.
-
Anyone order on 8/6 or later? I have to call them again tomorrow to find out the status of the ticket they created to research the delay... Order showed an Estiamted Ship Date of 8/10 but still nothing. Just wanted to see if anyone else was in the same boat...
-
Is this deal still alive?
-
as for the spreading, I read that online the technique for spreading the paste for a single core is different than a dual core, and different for quads as well. Something about spreading along a horizontal vs. vertical line..I got confused
Would someone clear this up for me please? :] -
Just give each core a light spread over the top (no more than the thickness of a piece of paper).
I don't care what any instructions say. Make sure the coat is even and spread to the edges of the die. This will prevent pockets of air to get trapped inside and that will cause less contact, thereby decreasing thermal conductivity.
Voila! Good-to-go -
For anyone still interested, I just ended a chat with a rep and they stated:
-
Wow that's a cheap price for that processor...!
When I've paid off the 2400 I've already spent, I'll buy one -
Amazing. It shipped today. Should be here Monday. Will post pic and batch info once it arrives. Now... NO stu... stuu... stuuuttering ppplllleaaasseeeee...

if I can't straighten out this suttering BS on my M17x I may have to put my x9100 in even though I got this beautiful QX9300
-
-
not much maybe 50$ per chip.. by the time you pay tax and shipping with ebay and paypal fees... you are not left with much
-
Crazy that the x9100 is 1983 but the QX9300 is 505...
By the way if you search for hp 507946-001 in google, there are places selling it under 500. -

EDIT: Nevermind, that website has a typo. Its a Q9300 not a QX. Still not a bad price though. -
Anyone know if the Bing Cashback works with this QX9300?
Since Bing is giving back 25% on HP, this thing would end up costing:
$502.55 x 75% = $377 -
according to people it only works for home laptops and not for parts.
-
electrosoft Perpetualist Matrixist
Aye, bing does not work for the parts store. I tried every which way, but the cashback is associated directly to the laptop site not the parts store which is different.
