I don't think there are many floating about - I know that they cannot be combined by my rep anyways - it's either one or the other. I know he's been offering some pretty good deals of late.....better than discounts available elsewhere by a good bit.

Need a quick reply if anyone can
Been offered a great deal but need advice
Windows 7 or 8? Says most people far recommend 7 over 8 but I'm paranoid it's old and will be outdated sooner? (I know nothing )
Going for one with 7970 etc and going to put in ram at later date (got 6gb to be going on with)

Really glad I got recommended this place , big thanks to Steve
I was asked not to divulge price in public as discount varies by day etc, so I can't discuss figure

Well, my opinion would be order with Windows 7 now and take advantage of the Windows 8 Pro upgrade offer for £14.99, as I mentioned to you in PM's. That way, you get the best of both worlds and if you do upgrade to Windows 8 and don't like it, you have Windows 7 to fall back on. If you order with Windows 8 and hate it, you are stuck with it, unless you have a retail OS disc that you bought previously for Windows 7 - which I don't think you will have, right?....

The offer is open for a good few more weeks: Windows Upgrade Offer - Program Information - you can upgrade to Windows 8 by creating a USB image (really simple to do and foolproof instructions via Microsoft) and you don't have to do it right away. The important thing to do would be to register your interest via the link I gave you before, follow the instructions and get your product licence key for Win 8 Pro and simply create the Windows 8 USB image on a flash drive and keep hold of it. Once you have that, you can install Windows 8 Pro at any time.

As for Windows 7 being old and outdated, nope. Windows 7 is a fine OS and will be supported for many more years to come. Even Windows XP, which is really old in comparison, is still supported by Microsoft until April 8th 2014. You can expect to see Windows 7 support for many many years, so I wouldn't worry about that.

6gb is fine and easily upgraded when you want to later on - same with SSD's.

Oh, and thanks for your discretion......mum's the word!

Hi stevie, just wanted to say first and foremost fair play to you mate for what your doing here. Theres not a lot of people out there who would be as helpful as to share their contact like you have, well not without wanting something in return anyway so seriously nicely done pal. Sounds like you've managed to get a good deal for quite a few people on here.
Hopefully your contact can get one for me too. A little bit about what im after, erm budget is about £1500 so thats a pretty basic config on the dell website for an alienware m17x r4, but obviously thats where im hoping your man would be able to help and get me a bit of a discount where i might then be willing to add a few further things to it to get mor for my buck.
But we'll see what your man says. Right now im in no rush as tbh im still talking with a friend over a different laptop that i havent decided on yet and i dont actually have all the money on me, so really would just like a basic quote so as i know what sort of deal i can get and i'll make my decision from there.
Anyway need to make a few more posts yet before i can pm you (its 5 posts you need isnt it?) so will get back to you as soon as.
    Thanks, Matt.

    Thanks Matt,

Yeah - around 5 posts should do it. Discounts are still available even on the most basic of spec. Of course, they won't be as much as on a fully loaded machine but every bit helps. If my chap can save you some money, then all's well, right? - just hit me up with a PM when you can and we can get you hooked up and get you a quote on whatever spec you want. Can't promise the earth, just a saving over list price for sure.

    Catch you soon, buddy.

Apart from just getting my post count up, :)
Do you reckon your sales guy can pull off deals that aren't already on the net/[through coupons and such] cause I'm in a good position to buy a m14x R2 as of right now. But I'm seriously reconsidering due to a couple of things that irritate me but you're just the awesome middle man so... i'm just wasting a post..

Edit-5 post does not give a PM option.
    :(

Could have double-posted for that, but I'll be a nice boy.

I got a couple of post order questions(they don't matter I'm just curious)

The spec for my laptop is :
    Components
    1 Alienware M17x : Standard Base
    1 Processor : 3rd Generation Intel Core i7-3630QM (6MB Cache, up to 3.4GHz w/ Turbo Boost
    2.0)
    1 Display : 17.3" WideFHD (1920 x 1080) WLED LCD
1 Camera : Integrated Skype HD Certified FullHD Camera with dual digital microphones 1 LCD Back Cover : Soft Touch - Nebula Red
    1 Memory : 6144MB (1x2048 + 1x4096) 1600MHz DDR3 Dual Channel
    1 Hard Drive : 500GB 7,200rpm SATA 3Gb/s HDD
1 Optical Drive : BluRay Combo (Blu-ray read only, DVD, CD read & write)
    1 Power Cord : UK 250V
1 Power Supply : Alienware 240W AC Adapter
    1 Battery : Primary 9-cell 93W/HR LI-ION
    1 Graphics : 2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon HD 7970M
1 Sound Card : Creative Sound Blaster Recon3Di with THX TruStudio Pro Software
    1 Wireless : Intel 2230 Wireless Card + BT

Is that classed as r3 or r4 etc (my friend was asking)

Also given I wanted the machine for playing blu rays my friend also thought is better ask if there was blu ray movie playing software with the laptop because apparently you can't play things without it (told u I didn't have a clue what I was doing )

If it doesn't can someone recommend me something free/cheap that can play blu rays please?

Oh and where is the memory slots that will have the 6gbs in ( I watched a vid or two on YouTube showing how to upgrade an r2, I'm thinking it will be the same) and two slots are easily accessible the other two you have to remove keyboard etc (that terrifies me lol).
If I was to add an SSd am I better off not putting any docs Ect on laptop first (because I will need to take out the existing harddrive , move it to a different hd slot, and format it right? Or an I mistaken

    Thanks again for help

It's an R4 - Dell do not sell new R3's anymore. The other giveaway sign is the CPU, as it is a 3rd generation IvyBridge processor (3xxx family) vs. the older R3 2nd generation SandyBridge CPU (2xxx family) - only R4's are 3rd gen, R3's are 2nd gen.....you might find an R3 on the outlet but NOT when buying new. The machine itself will come bundled with Cyberlink PowerDVD which will sort out your Blu Ray requirements - no need for additional software/expenditure.

If I am not mistaken, that ram configuration will be in your machine will be x1 4gb module and x1 2gb module. 2gb of that will run in dual channel mode and the remaining 2gb will run in waht Intel call "Flex Mode".

The modules themselves will more than likely be installed just under the removable base panel that comes off with four screws, slides forwards and then voila, access to the modules. Should you want to upgrade the ram to 16gb (which is the max supported by Win 7 HP) you would probably be best advised to get x2 8gb modules and simply swap the modules around....that way you do not have to strip the machine down any further to expose the other sodimm slots, which are located under the keyboard. You can view a teardown video of the R3/R4 over here: Alienware M17x R3 R4 complete teardown / how to take apart / disassemble - Hidevolution.com - YouTube

If you add a SSD, you will want to load your OS on to it so you would be best off clean installing the OS to the SSD. You will also want to move the existing HDD to another Sata port on the drive caddy - again, a simple procedure as all you need do is remove the base panel again, remove the hard drive caddy (4 screws again) and unscrew the drives from the caddy and reassemble. Simples. It's just a few screws, no major thing really.

As far as getting the SSD up and running, best advice would be to clean install the OS to it and then any files you want. If you have stuff already on the HDD that you want to keep, document wise, just back it up before starting. Then you can put them back on your SSD when done. You can use cloning software to clone the state of your HDD to your SSD if you prefer, but unless you have such software (or if it comes bundled with your new SSD) it's more expense that is avoidable.....and not really required.

If you plan on using the existing drive as a data storage drive, yes...you would need to format it but that is simple too.

If you need help or advice on doing any of the above, don't hesitate to ask....

StevieJones, does ur rep only make shipments within UK or can he arrange dell to ship directly to Stockholm - Sweden or i.e an ARAMEX address in london who then will ship it to me?

    Thanks

Short answer - Anyone can buy from him.

Long answer - my rep can sell anyone a machine, as long as you have a UK address for it to be shipped to - such as a freight forwarding service like you mentioned above. You order the machine with my rep and provide the UK address details of the freight forwarder you want to use and when the machine is shipped to them, they ship it out to you, wherever you are in the world. Obviously this is an added expense, but depending on where you are, it may be cheaper than purchasing within your own country. He's arranged a few machines for Non-UK citizens and they have been shipped out and freight-forwarded to the likes of Italy, Stockholm etc.....and those people who have used his services have saved on the cost of biting the bullet in their own country and got themselves a better deal overall - even though it might add a bit to Estimated Delivery times as it's being shipped twice.

Once you are ready to proceed with a quote, just let me know - I'm sure we can help out.

I've got one for my M18x - I can't comment on everyday use etc but it does appear to be very well made....I haven't even used mine, it's still sat in its box. Maybe Ebay or the like....heck, you might even be interested in mine! - it's of no real use to me.

I personally would not get the messenger style bag for a m17x let alone a m18x, they are very heavy, and unless your moving for less than 1 minute its very uncomfortable. Get a backpack, the orion backpack is definitely big enough to fit the laptop and its a bit easier to carry, compared to 5+ kilos on one shoulder.

Backpack is what I meant to say - that's what I have. I wasn't sure they actually made a messenger bag for the 18x in the UK - think they might in the US.

Unfortunately, outlet products cannot be discounted further - I'm not even 100% sure if he can place an order for one. If you are looking for a good forwarding company, I think a few have been mentioned over the last 10 or so pages - have a bit of a read back.

Bit of scared from the forwarding companies, what if the package get lost. :/ But well maybe that will be the solution.

Tho would be nice to guess if he can ship out outlet products.

I'll ask him about outlet stuff but I think he only deals with new machines. Regarding the forwarding company, just make sure that you package is fully insured to it's full value before they ship it out - that way, if anything happens to it, you are covered.

    Such as what?

EDIT: Nice! - I see that there are two 680m Sli options. One at normal price, the other is going for a song at £370 over base ;)

EDIT no.2 - Sli price just gone down to £210 over base......maybe Dell are having a "bargain basement" clearout LOL :D

Ooops - edit 2 was wrong, still £370 over base (I had the wrong base gpu selected) - cracking deal!

Yes, this is basically what I was alluding to in this thread:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m18x/707725-m18x-product-code-sku-query.html
I was convinced it was a mistake on their part and wanted to see my order in production before broadcasting it! I actually ordered two days ago picking this option, note the SKU is different than the "more expensive" 680 sli. I got a €700 reduction with the "cheaper" 680 sli and then added the 10% voucher and free delivery voucher for one cracking deal!

I see the 680 sli price has returned to normal, that was either one short fire sale or a mistake...I've my fingers crossed my order arrives (says in production).

Yeah, I see it's now almost back to normal - they still have two radials (which is obviously a glitch) for 680m SLI that are priced at the normal full price of £1,020 over base. I guess for the lucky few that managed to place an order with the crazy glitch, it's irrelevant now. Fingers crossed that for those of you who DID place an order, that Dell honor it and don't mess you about with your orders.

Well done and congrats to anyone who managed to save a hefty chunk while the "special offer" lasted! :D
