ouch that's nasty so you would be paying (in the uk) £230 for the enclosure, approx £60 for a new modular PSU then have to make a permanent jumper & buy a GPU

for a box with a cheap PSU & a £30 adaptor dell sure know how to make money

Obviously, I have now idea if this would work with your laptop but for the cost saving i would be tempted to spend some time in the DIY eGPU section of the forum I believe there are other models with different adaptors just have to ask around and look

yeah it seems that's the case. It's actually cheaper to get from Amazon, £186 currently. So that will save you a bunch compared to Dell's website. For me I don't see a need for it yet, so I'll probably grab one from eBay second hand when the time comes and do my own mods. Or maybe I don't need it at all if I switch to desktop.

if you can go back to using a desktop that's what I would always recommend it life is so much easier except the same old problem...

    Microsoft :mad2:

but hey at least their not as bad as apple ... yet

or you could look & see if somewhere will sell you just the F.Alienware graphics amplifier PCIe connector & cable

Despite all the changes they've made to their laptops, the current Alienwares are actually the best when it comes to eGPU solutions. Users can choose to run the AGA off the proprietary port, or use a 3rd party eGPU with the TB3 port, or DIY solutions than run on whichever port. There's choices to choose from, can't say the same for other laptops

Still nothing beat good ol DTRs

fair enough, myself I would go with either thunderbolt 3 or a DIY solution. Tying yourself down to a proprietary port on something that should easily outlast the laptop seems like a bad idea to me but that's just my opinion

...therefore, thank goodness for the likes of Razer Core etc...and to those companies in the future that may also provide a solution..

It's true though...AW does have the most diverse option due to their very own AGA. Razer on the other hand can't say the same as they can not use the proprietary AW port. That is not to say that proprietary is good, but in a way I think AW is in some way banking off the idea that they have this proprietary port to expound on their retarded decisions with the direction that they are going.

i think from what I've read though that the F.Ailenware graphics amplifier is only 4x is that right?

i think we might be getting a bit to off topic though

Correct the AGA is PCI express 4x 3.0. Just enough to run a high end card fairly well but it is running on its last legs I think. Not sure if the cable itself is 4X or because the lanes available by the Intel chipset are restricted to 4 lanes.

TB3 is theoretically the same but you hav eoverhead when the PCI express signal is going to be converted to TB3. Also the AGA has the USB ports etc on a separate line. The Razer core for example does the GPU & USB ports on the same line. When you transfer data while playing a game, the GPU suddenly drops to a crawl. Dave2D did a test and the AGA was a bit faster in practice than the Razer core. The Razer core does work on the current Alienware laptops too by the way.

Yes indeed. Dave2D's light on demonstrating this was great. This is a very interesting time in the computer world, especially in the gaming laptop world, because with the ability to run an Amp like the Razer Core that is not a proprietary option, it challenges, rather forces AW to think outside of the box to provide an option that would exceed what 3rd party companies can offer. This is good for us as the consumers...so I hope more and more companies continue to start keeping things in check so to speak.

unfortunately I would have to disagree with that point as the whole purpose of using a propitiatory connector is to get people to stick with your system if a customer already Owens a F.AGA with a connector that means it can only be used on your system means the consumer is less likely to switch to a different product (why by another £230 box when you already have one), Razors open one means that they will sell to a larger customer base but F.Alienware's approach should me a greater retention of customers, also they seem to be dead set on mediocrity, just look at there desktops

I really do hope so and AMD need to step up there game to get nVidia & intel back in check

dx12 multi adapter with aga + core?

also, how is the usb a separate line on the aga compared to the core? both device uses one cable.

MSI GT83VR Titan SLI-024 from XoticPC
    _________________
We're about to find out. The owner of the unwanted p/o/s 460 doesn't want his 1080 in a deathgrip, nor the i7 6700 & wants to try a swap. Since R5's new, he'll be one of the 1st to buy the 460, pull it, & attempt to replace it; from there we'll learn the how-to
    [IMG]
The case harness in R5 tells u what u need to know about its budget-nature & maximum skimp; ketchup n' mustard cables with see-through sleeve that don't even get heatshrink with zipties, they gets fabric-taped ends: cost cut. Note obvious attempt on 24p ATX 4p CPU 8p GPU cables to keep the sheer sleeve as short as possible, leaving as much wire 'unsleeved' in obvious attempts to save a nickel
    [IMG]
Grfx cables are just as naked at the ends, where red (& white) connectors cost less than black ones, & Mr Dell knows a penny saved is a penny earned. This estimated $150 luke-warm 850Bronze power supply with its cheap harness using shorter wire lengths, reduced wire & connector count & a modular panel with (only) 16ports - yet only 12 get filled - is a certain source of revenue: miserly dollars on their end translate into 150 dollars on yours. I marvel over what discussions took place at the Design Table / Cutting Block, knowing R5 has to be built on a tight budget but sold at a premium to widen the profit margin. What would otherwise be a server-grade 38mm top fan with some muscle for that small cramped space is now a 25mm 'to keep things a little more quiet' (& a little less-costly) *wink*

I'm off track. I posted these pics to show the (ugly) custom 24pin ATX cable is about half the length of a standard 24p found in typical pouches; if this person can pull off a swap, it has to include the fact the new ~24inch ATX cable can fit in that space & allow the swing-arm to close fully. From there, the other modular cables (which won't be custom lengths) also have to fit. Variables pile-up, so I wish the person & his Alien luck in that tight space. The stock 850w chassis is 8inches long, typical 850s are 6.5-7, he's ordered a 650w at 6inches, so there's hope some space will open up at the modular end for the cables ... how or if a 6" 650w can translate into any 850-1000w working in there is an unknown. I wish he'd tried an 850, but someone will at some point & we'll get an answer, maybe the one we want to hear
Here in the NBR AGA Owner's Lounge from about February we saw some psu swapping posts, you have to dig in that thread for likely candidates. The least painless way is to buy a chassis whose rear plug is known to Goldilox
    SS2.jpg
Using standoffs & a right-angle plug adapter is a clever way to toss in 'any' top-tier PSU: Golds / Platinums / Ti's, Active PFC & 100% Japanese capacitors I'd hope. GeForce GTX deserves nothing less than to sip off of clean filtered efficient ripple-suppressed juice: not dirty noisy inefficient ... ummmm ... ewwww
When amateurs know this, what does it tell us about the 'professionals' at Dellware, who of anybody should know these things better than all / most of us
    CaptureTx.JPG
Rule of Thumb: never strap your GPU to something without sleeve & with white zipties. Again, $3000 375w TitanZ (which is what AGA was originally intended for) & Titan X will heat that little thing up if they wants to (hotter it gets less efficient it gets) yet the fan is so small u can't even see it. This setup is Azor's pride & joy, banked the company on it too
    _______________
If given the choice, I'm sure I'd rather work for OriginPC, where they get to play with real hardware, & don't have to feel bad for their buyers since they install all name-brand stuff, all of which has to pass public & market scrutiny

    "The ORIGIN Difference

Every ORIGIN PC is built & supported in the United States with name brand, non-proprietary components providing optimal performance & maximum upgrade-ability"

Would I buy an Origin? No. But when given the choice, I like to think I'd rather work there than across the street in Alien World. Employees at both companies can sympathize over high-prices posted by management, but, at least Origin employees can sleep at night knowing the customer gets name-brand hardware in trade for the high price

I think Alien employees sleep better at night knowing their customers don't. I doubt the non-80 460 in Aurora & AGA causes the slightest shiver, they may be proud of it for all I know. Screwing the unknowing ill-advised customer is a paycheck they can look forward to each Friday

Dellware: not invited to the Titan Party

    Thank Goodness too
@|Gamese7en and I had a good ol' time last year, debating the meaning behind Nvidia's $999 MSRP relative to the Alien's $1500 Titan X, epic post on the AClub

Let's see. Now that TRex is $1200 MSRP, that'd mean the Aliens want 1750 --> am I wrong or am I right. Yeah, we don't want or need them to be invited on the System Builder's list, lol

    Speaking of ...
Alienware Amplifier and New Pascal Titan X card
Here we have a very brave soul, who's ready to strap his pricey Tx to Ol' Sparky. $1200 card strapped to a $25 power supply ... you read that right ...
"Spent hours with NVIDIA & more hours with DELL today trying to get it to work. It sees the card but drivers are no good yet. Long story short, waiting on new drivers or BIOS upgrade for the new Titan X (Pascal) to work , went back to GTX 1080 FE, until new NVIDIA drivers or DELL BIOS or driver is released".
See my Rule of Thumb above please  1080FE don't like walking the long Green Mile with Ol' Sparky either

The Dell has an usb hub cable paired with the PCI express cable. WIth TB3 all data just goes over 1 TB3 line.

Because there are no more PCI express lanes available with mobile devices. There is just not more room than 4X

TB was never made for more bandwidth but the AGA and MSI solutions just are bottlenecked by what the CPU can give.

On a CPU that can only support one 16x PCIE connection if there are two PCIE devices connected this will be split to two lanes running at 8x, if there are three you will have 8x,4x,4x. same as they used to do it on the desktop, also motherboard vendors can add chips to support extra bandwidth, its the connection it self doesn't support such high bandwidth,

They already did that. The gpu is running at 8x, AGA port 4X, 1x PCI express on, the other SSD at 2x and TB3 on 4x.

so they didn't they design the motherboard to support the through put you would of thought they would of used a PLX chip

for those wanting to know what a PLX chip (or equivalent) is here is a good explanation:
