Dell are maybe unhappy with the display options on the 18 inch, will be interesting to see what the exact lineup is.

I think this is good logic. Dell know (well, they do if they read these boards) that people want a better panel. We've been crying out for the return of the RGBLED 1920x1200 of the M17x R2 for quite some time now and Dell can't provide this as there a basically no manufacturers of such a screen. I hope that the downsizing is a direct correlation to the offering of better quality internal displays, such as the Precision screens. That would be awesome and I'd be very happy to see high end panels - even if it's at the cost of some screen real estate. -
I really doubt we will see precision panels trickling down to alienware side, I have noticed parts options missing from consumer side but they never tend to do so from precision side. Bluray writer, decent LCD panels, aluminium construction, etc.

But the 120hz 17 inch panels make a lot of sense for SLI systems.

Wonder if these models will still sound like leaf blowers? Would be nice if they could take some clues from Asus' cooling design, and Apple's fan control, and have a more quiet cooling system. But perhaps their engineering skills are simply not there. Noisy fan at even 3000 rpm, then reaching threshold 60C, then immediately 6000 rpm and leaf blower. That's unfortunately my experience from Alienware.
-
Well both asks and apple have had issues with cooling. Considering what apple runs, it's not that hard for them. Asus g series had cooling issues as well.
For what we get in alienwares (performance wise), in my *opinion* noise is quite acceptable and well within reason. -
I wish they offer ips or even higher gamut LCD panels on alienware laptops. But I highly doubt that.

One of the problems is that the chips really are like that, idle and sipping on power or you fire up a game and its all systems go, they have worked on pushing everything in the middle down to help battery life. -
Agreed, one of the reasons why my GF wanted Alienware is because she saw my RGBLED backlit keyboard.
I also love the RGB LED backlit keyboard because it can do night mode, which no other laptop can do: http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware/703808-coolest-thing-you-can-do-your-screen.html -
I agree, but overall I think there is room for improvement with their cooling and fan design, and I hope they prioritize that in the future. I just can't stand a machine that sounds like a leaf blower, no matter if the hardware inside is excellent, and allows for overclocking, etc. I look forward to see what they have accomplished with these new models.

It seems like our loyalty to Alienware products is being tested here..

You little temptress, Brother Bill!

32 at the most. Definitely getting anxious!

if they axe the m18x im going to be pissed and just move on to originpc... unless they go bigger!
-
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
Let's just say that I don't think the M18x is getting axed....
-
My insurance guys just placed an m18x on order today to replace my power surge affected m17xr2, not sure if I can delay them for a months though
Unless dell does same thing like ivy bridge release(or was it sandy bridge release?)
-
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
It was Sandy to Ivy - Dell held back orders that were placed between a certain date and "upgraded" those orders to include Ivy. I think it would be anyone's guess if they will do similar with Ivy to Haswell.
Dell to upgrade unshipped Alienware orders to Ivy Bridge CPUs for free -
I'm kinda torn between a M18x and the OriginPC EON17-SLX with both of them spec the same there is about a 600-700 difference in the cost. But I'm worried more about the cooling setup on the OriginPC model then I am the M18x and it seems. Decisions! Decisions! Decisions!
-
Why would you buy that from Origin? It's just an overpriced clevo...
-
The Origin is just a Clevo, so you should be concerned about the cooling. It has a locked down BIOS and a plastic chassis. It has only 2 versus 3 HDD bays and battery life is very poor compared to the M18x (under 3 hrs versus ~5 hrs for the M18x). The M18x stomps it to bits in terms of performance. Based on my personal preference, that Origin laptop is less attractive to look at... especially the rear vents. You can possibly get a better deal on a Clevo buying from another vendor, but opting for the M18x seems like a no brainer. All things considered, the difference in price is negligible considered the jump in quality. If you are looking at web prices, that's also deceiving because you can call Alienware and negotiate a discount on an M18x that may end up making it less expensive than the Clevo.

LOL WELL IF YOU COULD PM ME WHY YOU PUT THAT VERY ( i KNOW SOME THING YOU DONT) STATEMENT THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!
-
I have had a chat with Dell sales rep from UK and he advised me that the new model (r5) is coming within another month or two:
*snip* please see Forum Rules
He has advised againts purchasing r4 at this point in time, which is quite unusual
-
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
No news there, bro - that's old hat! -
He's not advising against it, that would get him in trouble.
We should see it by the end of May, they won't release it at the end of summer because they'll miss a lot of the students looking for new pc's, among others.
Can't wait to see what changed. -
No offense mate, but that didn't really confirm anything. He merely just responded to your statement - stating there 'may' be a new revision. They're there to sell you a product, not to look into what's your best interests.
-
you know, it would be smart of dell to let things slip.. for there consumer base.. like generic configs.. or at least confirm what revisions are coming.. if they did that it would give us some thing to look forward to and kill speculation..
-
The info from Dell rep UK gives me ideas, as I get in touch with them quite frequently not once I was advised not to purchase the current model
we will see if he sends me an email closer to the D day

Haswell and ivy don't take the same chipset so there is no way that they can offer an IVY in a haswell machine until haswell launches and then do a swap.
-
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
That's pretty much what Dell did with the launch of Ivy - they held back orders already placed (there must have been some kind of cut-off in place) and then shipped those orders with HM77 and Ivy cpu's. I wouldn't see the point in putting an Ivy cpu in over a Haswell chip anyway, regardless of chipset/socket. -
Is the new M14X going to be huge like the last model? Last one was as big as most 15 inch laptops.
Going by the few pics I have seen It looks unique that's for sure but not sure if I like it yet, the hardware especially the GPU better be killer. -
It will probably be about the same size, perhaps slightly lighter. Hope they address the heat issue! Looks like they have from these pictures, but these pictures aren't official.
-
yea he knows some thin..lol
-
I`m just gonna put this one here and then walk slowly away....

Son, that's the pre-DELL Aurora M7700, based on the Clevo D900T. -
Way to ruin my whole experiment. Bah
Pretty cheesy looking notebook btw
-
katalin_2003 NBR Spectre Super Moderator
Sorry, nice try though
-
Hehe thanks. It does look like the keyboard from the M14x spy photo in the first post too. Thats why I used it. Didn`t expect some Alienware expert with knowledge of all models to slam down on my experiment so early
-
haswell drops next month. So give it a few weeks and we will have our new laptop
-

This true, we wont have to wait long now
-
New details about the M17xR5
Its built by Magnesium Alloy instead of plastic
1080p IPS screen (Matte optional)
GTX 780M
Haswell
New Mouse
Will be showcased on June 11-13th
Benyouhui -
Wow that sounds great!
-
It does. I wouldn't get excited until the showcase though.
-
If true, this would be wonderful. Sadly, I think that's too big an "if".
-
How credible is the poster on that forum?
Matte screen seems too good to be true
I can see a few more people turning their backs on it since the magnesium will add a bit of weight on it, although still lighter than the aluminum M18x
-
Still speculation. The poster of that forum says, and I quote, "probably." Those changes would be nice, but we still do not know.
I'm surprised Alienware hasn't released any news/information yet... This time last year we already had the new systems in hand and knew exactly what was coming. -
They already charge too much just for a 1080p upgrade ($200 now wth..), so can only I fear how much AW overtaxes for an IPS.
But that still makes me lean heavily in this direction, if true. -
Hello,
Has anyone heard anything about the next-gen Alienware gaming Laptops? Which will have Haswell processors. I know they wont arrive until Haswell arrives but do they usually announce something ahead of the release before they become available?
Haswell is due out next month so could we be seeing images/teasers or hearing something this month with availability next month?
Im looking for a Full HD display, 3 or 4 USB 3.0 ports (and I assume the next-gen Alienware laptops will have all USB 3.0 ports), possibly 1 Thunderbolt port (I think ASUS has a 17 inch notebook with this already) and good SSD+HDD combinations like 80-256 SSD and a 500-750 HDD, backlit keyboard. I dont think thats too much to ask for at all in whats soon to be mid 2013 Infact there are probably notebooks that have this just not sure if there are any 17 inch Laptops.
FYI Im actually looking for a good 17 inch notebook not really a gaming with those specs but these days I cant seem to find one I think the best days of the 17 inch notebook are behind us sadly. -
Full HD is a given, as is 4 USB 3.0 ports. That's what the r4 has, after all.
Hybrid options tend to come and go from the order site, but are really easy to build yourself. Just order it with a HDD, buy a SSD off newegg, and install it. (and reinstall windows, get a nice clean start, even if Alienware doesn't load much bloatware)
As for Thunderbolt, that is at the top of my wish list. We already have miniDP, might as well add a couple extra wires and a $30 controller... -
There is nothing set in concrete in terms of what's coming, we frankly have no idea at this time.
All we know is, what dusk star mentioned. Rest is under NDA for another 30ish days.
Sorry if I sounded rude but I am super annoyed as we don't know what is coming and I am delaying my insurance replacement m18x, I got only s many excuses up my sleeve
Sneak peek on the upcoming M17x and M14x
