Me too. Magnesium build + IPS screen will be really interesting and will bring in tons of sales. I also hope they will change the keyboard layout with a more sophisticated look like MSI and Clevo do. Looks like they played around with different keyboards with the spy photos so who knows.

And the people in the link I posted also say "change in apparance", so the new owners is really changing course it seems. Interesting :)

I really don`t know. The guy who said the specific dates seems to know. He was the one who said magnesium alloy. Changes is coming to Alienwares, there is tons of people from Benyouhui who have spoken of change in the looks of the notebooks. They have talked about spy photos of both M17x and M18x but I haven`t found them unfortunately.

Benyouhui is probably the biggest Alienware forum, so I respect what they say, but at the same time take it with some salts. Lets just wait and see.

Yeah - I'm dubious on the IPS panel and matte option. Whilst that would be a dream come true for me, I doubt realistically that it will turn into a reality.

So Cloudfire is just spreading speculation/rumors and not an actual legit info from Dell/Alienware or what?

I don't think that's fair to say that, as we all have speculations about what will or might be. Until it's out in the open, anything could be said - might be true, might not...that's all we can do right now - speculate. Unless someone has rock solid proof, take everything you hear with a pinch of salt and that way you won't be disappointed if rumours you might like to hear, or believe, don't eventuate.

Or perhaps an extra grain of salt he did just try to trick us with an old pre dell clevo in smurf blue. Id like the alloy body rumor seeing as i love build quality...but whats up with you guys so hyped over a matte screen from what i understand glossy makes things more vivid soo could someone explain it to me?

Ips screen matte vs ips screen glossy?

I guess matte vs gloss is an ongoing "personal preference" thing. I find that glossy panels are horrid to work with as they catch too many reflections. Other people say matte loses image quality and that anti-glare coatings cause graininess. If that were the case, Dell Ultrasharp professional monitors woulnd't all be matte, would they?

Again, it's all down to personal preference, though.

Well good luck getting information directly from Dell about the new Alienware line months before its even announced by them...

Would you prefer a dead forum instead or valuable information that may or may not hold? I can`t control what each individual believe or not. Its up to you to dissect these rumors and make up your own mind ;)

Anyways, I hate glossy screens but if its IPS screen I`m gonna pick IPS anyday of the week instead of matte screen. The colours and viewing angles of those screens are just superb.

That would actually be a tough choice: Matte TN, or glossy IPS.

I think I'd get whatever is cheaper, and replace it with a matte IPS panel from eBay. :p

    Thanks Guys for your feedback!

Dusk Star yes the a Thunderbolt port would be nice instead of the 4 USB 3.0 ports I would accept 3 USB 3.0 ports and a Thunderbolt port.

Hey, I never said anything about having less USB ports - I'd like to keep the 4 USB 3.0 ports and the esata port, with the thunderbolt a replacement for the current miniDP. No need to reduce connectivity, right?

LOL...hey I agree, I just didn't think they would keep the 4 USB 3.0 ports and add a thunderbolt port but if they would do that it would be good.

I think for me it's going to come down to a Asus, MSI or Alienware unless the someone presents a very good alternative 17 + notebook but like I said the day's of the 17 inch seem to be fading fast.

No one really knows what the next gen Alienwares will be comprised of. There have been rumors of the M18x going away and the M17x to be a dual card system again, but no one will know for sure till Dell comes out and says something.

It will be interesting to see how big the new M14x really is, the last model was almost the size of a 15" laptop and I hope the newer model is more compact. In the end my new laptop will be either the new 13" Clevo or this new AW, depending more on which has the better GPU ;)

You think the current keyboard looks cheap? The keyboards on the Alienware laptops are great, in my opinion. Care to elaborate on why you consider it "cheap?" The keyboard in the first post looks cheaper to me...

Yeah the keyboard on the first page looks worse than the current Alienware keyboards. Don`t disagree there. I just hope Dell ditch the current keyboards.

The keyboard is way too flashy, it looks like a toy and it looks cheap (probably is too). If you bought that notebook in to a meeting, you`d get kicked out the moment you booted that notebook up. I know some people disagree with me here, but I know many people who refuse to buy Alienware mainly because the keyboard is way too cheesy.

Look at the MSI keyboard. Looks professional, its made by steelseries, semi mechanical, great feeling. MSI started with it, Clevo followed.

All of the "gaming laptop" keyboards leave something to be desired: the MSI keyboards with their missed keystrokes, Alienware keyboards with their flex and flat keys...

Oh, and the keyboard is the only thing that looks better on the MSI.

Even without the lights (which can be turned off) I probably wouldn't bother bringing my m18 to any kind if work conference. Usually I only need to run a power point slide which can be run off a pocket calculator these days . I also know people who don't like the lights, most of them want their machine to double up as a 'to and fro'work horse.

The M18x stands out just due to sheer size, so I can see that being an issue which has given people pause as well when I have taken my M17x-R2 into work situations even with lights off. My M11x hardly gets noticed except for the keen observer, while the M14x-R2 gets a bit of attention but is usually accepted pretty quick in a work role. Without lighting most people don't even realize the M14x is an Alienware.

I owned the very first alienware gaming laptop, the one that had 128 megabytes of memory on its gpu, which was basically the first gpu that could handle a decent amount of graphics. To be honest, as much as I liked the designs of the current generation of alienware laptops, I wanted a change in design and I had got so sick of the current design but it might not be so much of that as I was waiting and wanting something more out of alienware, something new just a change, that to me even if the design they are going with isnt as good as it was, any change is better then no change for me.

Iv made some crude designs of what I wanted for the new alienware laptops in terms of appearance, has anyone ideas of there own what they would like in a new design?

All I want is a 1920x1200 (16:10) 90%+ gamut LCD. If matte display without glossy cover, it will be better.

We can say all we want a out the LCD panels in m17xr4 and m18xr2 but 72% gamut is nothing special and is actually pretty bad in my opinion.

    Im so torn right now....
I really want a m17xr4 with the 3d screen, I love the current looks of the computers, not so much the new model looks.
But I also want to wait to see if they release a m11x replacement... June 10th can not get here any faster!

Just hope I can snag a r4 after june if I dont like any of the other offerings.

M17xr4 has no express card post. Same goes for m14xr2 but m18xr2 has one. Seems like decision was made to remove express card slot to make chassis slimmer.

Personally, I don't really care about express card slot, as I haven't used express card slot in few yrs and moreover almost everything available over express card slot is also available in USB flavour.

I'd consider it highly unlikely. The M14x already has heat issues with a single GPU running inside ( some guy's M14x heatsink mod), and a second would very likely be more than it could reasonably handle. Unless Alienware goes the way of Asus' G series of laptops in terms of cooling, I don't imagine there will be SLI within the M14x systems anytime in the near future.

Most of what I have seen about that are complaints by owners that suggest it is a rather poorly performing engineering abortion. But, hey... it's a Lenovo so we can't expect too much. You can't fit 10 pounds of sand into a 5 pound bag without something breaking. Small and light is going to mean compromise somewhere. It's unavoidable.

Dell knows they have a cash cow on their hands: loyal fanbase, (somewhat) differentiated design, strong brand, large profit margin. I'm guessing they're going to scrimp as much as possible on this gen (less aluminum and magnesium, lighter-duty cooling etc.)

Right, but you can imagine if someone did it right, removing the drive and turning that space into a second true MXM bay, instead of a hotswappable crazy town with no cooling. It would be as if you had SLI 660ms, and would be interesting to say the least.

Yes, two would definitely be better than one if it can be powered and cooled effectively... no question about that. The hot-swappable part is silly. Just use the space for a dedicated SLI solution and connect an external ODD to an eSATA port and be done with it, LOL.
