Ugh I feel sick to my stomach. It's sitting at 51c now with just Google Chrome open and my computer has been hanging like crap . Simple things like right clicking will hang the system for 2-3 seconds before responding and when I start to type in a box it lags out a good 5-10 seconds before my text start to appear. I'm worried sick, quite literally.

It might be because its quag core that its at 51c, I have opera open and my dual-core is at 45c.

When did the lag start to occur?

This morning. I rebooted just a few moments ago and it seems to be working. I'm wondering if maybe a program had a major memory leak or something.

True, like I said I'm coming from Mac/Linux :D but I'm still concerned with idle temps. Can anyone possibly find an article or something stating the average idle temp of the Intel Core 2 Quad Q9100 2.26Ghz? I tried looking last night.

PS: While idling my avg CPU usage is 1%-4%

Yeah I guess you're right. Let me take this time to thank you guys as a community. I may have only posted on here twice but I've read these forums for hours on end before purchasing my system and I really appreciate all you guys do. Especially in a 4:00am thread growing to 5 pages in half an hour trying to help me. Means alot.

I think everybody missed the bus here. The M17 is a desktop replacement and you should not be using this "Notebook" NOT "Laptop" on your lap unless you place the notebook on a tray of sorts in order for the fans to work effectively and circulate air under the machine.

Your temps are running fine, you do not need to apply thermal paste. Just remember to keep the fans open and ensure that the air is able to circulate under the machine.

Yeah I'm certainly aware it's a Desktop Replacement. I simply need to use it on my lap occasionally for simplistic things such as word processing or programming. 99% of the time I have it docked at my desktop hooked up to a monitor, keyboard, mouse, subwoofers, etc.

I don't think you'll have much to worry about.

Don't worry and enjoy that beast which is a Alienware laptop :)

if I was you I would buy a Notebook cooler like Xpadcooler That lays on your lap and keeps the fan airway open. With out burning out the Fans.

I don't really use it on my lap though, AtolSammeek. My main concern was it's high idle temp of ~60c while on my desk with the fans open.

a quad core cpu is definitely going to run hotter than a dual core and consume more power as well, perhaps you could increase your fan speed to keep it cooler or if you are handy you could use an aftermarket thermal paste? im not sure what alienware is using but arctic silver is generally an option on clevo based laptops. Clevo is the ODM for alienware laptops aka Sager and other boutique OEM's like alienware.

    the m17 is a Flextronics/ Arima w840Di not clevo

he cannot reapply thermal paste like i stated before because it will void the warrenty. i forgot first :D

and the 60 is a little hotter then it should of been but not dangerous

While I agree Alienware has sold some re-packaged clevo's in the past, they aren't selling any at the moment...
M9750 was Arima, M17 is Flextronics, and the M15x/M17x are built exclusively for AW by someone other than Clevo (can't remember who)...with the m17 seemingly exclusive to AW now, all of their laptops are exclusive to them...and not one Clevo in the line-up...

Eh.. My temps would hit 80 on the CPU occassionally with a quad extreme. 60-70 is well within safe temp range. Don't even sweat it.
