Thats it i Give up with AW -- 4850's CANCELLED

If you got your hands on a Mobility Radeon 4850, I would bet money that it would work, no problem. There would be no Crossfire, but me, I would choose one 4850 over two 3870s every time. 800 shaders vs 640, plus no scaling issues.

Someone needs to ask about buying just a single card.

also the m17 has a hybrid slot that work with Nvidia ... its werid but stupid 2 ATI cards or 1 Nvidia card

 

Hmm that sucks :/ although the 3850/70 crossfire i must say is still lethal, prehaps waiting some more time and AW may think of something.

 

i did, they have removed the 4850 from thier systems altogether

they are no where near ready if they ever will come out

i wont buy AW again, not because of the laptop but thier customer support could be improved if my cat was running the place

As an m17 owner I have to say I was a little miffed when the previous member stated his order for the 4850 had been cancelled. Then obviously reading the comments about them never coming to our laptop. Well after having a chat with the tech support guy at AW europe over in Ireland he had another reason for them not being available yet.

Basically he said that they are coming without a doubt but simply will not be available as an upgrade until they are made available for new M17 systems as a new build. He was saying all the info about MXM trouble and heat is just purely speculation as they work perfectly. Also a quick check on his system showed they are very much on their stock list and will be available soon. Just thought I would share that info with you all.

 

Pls don't blame AW for that, I am quite sure Dell is guilty, I am quite sure they decide this ...

For me I'll think, the M17 was the last notebook alienware produced, now you can only buy Dell notebooks which look like alienwares...

As soon as I have a M17x I'll remove this oppinion

Well it's actually an MXM-II/III but it really doesn't matter for MXM-IV because an MXM-II/III slot can work with MXM-II, III and IV. The Asus W90 has the same setup of having an MXM-II/III connector, though both 4870s are MXM-IV (the 4850s in the GT725 btw are MXM-III, but has no crossfire connector).

What's preventing an MXM-IV card from fitting into the 2nd GPU slot in the M17/W840 is the fan; it's interfering with where the HE tab would stick out. They could have designed the system better in this regard, but meh.

 

yes id agree with that, pitty i got m17 even if they said next year and no sooner or no deffo not untill m17x has been out a year at least we would know what the crack was.

I don't think I'd recommend that, or even swapping for a 280M. Overclocked 280M is about 10% slower than CF 3870, and it's almost like running WUXGA is free for the 3870 because of the high memory bandwith.

Your main boost would come from games that CF didn't scale with, notably Crysis.

Well hopefully the M17x has a much longer battery life then the M17 does , with a 400 nit dualbulb display and all the other stuff in that machine i cant imagine the battery life being better at all or maybe worse. You can turn down brightness etc but that thing will still be slurping the battery im sure(even with the 9400m) .

 

2-3 hours

im good with that

 

gaming for the whitebook was 45 and just relaxing was 1h 30min if i did all the brightness dimmed out and stuff

 

i hit 2:00 to 2:15 new every thing off and dimmed

id be happy with 2-3 like i said

stealth mode makes it run @ 65 w
or run on intergrated but i unno what that runs at

well my old hp with a 1.5ghz c2d and a 8600m gs 17in 1440*900 got 3h 30mins just doing regualer stuff.

it's been a while but 3:30 was fully dim and heavy web surfing on wifi and ethernet and listining to music. 9cell battery. gaming was 2:30 i think that i don't remember i don't really game on battery.

For what? Did they prommis you that they will offer you other gpu's in the future?

If they did (and you can proof it ) than do it and may be they are so afraid of you that they will offer some to all of us

Just as a thought, can the m17 use nvidia 280M in terms of "fitting and support (not the cooling)?

you will not get anywhere in that suit.. and the m17 can use a single 9800 so ill bet it can also use a single 280 but not in sli mode.

 

yeh it can use one but cant SLI due to MxM incompatibilty (again)

but 1 x 280 is slightly slower then cf 3870s from what i have read

he said he still has not recieved any word officially they were to be cancelled. he sent a message to the upper offices and is waiting for a response from the actual corp offices to know whats going on ill post back when he responds

I'd hate it to sell my M17, order an M17x and then find out that we will be able to upgrade afterall lol .

Rather spend the money i will lose with selling the M17 to buy new cards.

i will be sure to call him and ask tomm. he was right on about the shipping times being bumpes for the 17x and many other things he has given me info on so id say he is a good source

 

Please ask for more info on the ATI cards for M17x....and if Dell will be offering Win7 vouchers.
