I'm gonna agree with that... Would you rather buy the card and have them ship it without testing it and you end up with 2 4850's that are useless or have them test it thoroughly and make sure its stable so nothing will go wrong??? I even expected less of alienware...

The only fault of AW here is giving the impression 4870's (then 4850's) were going to be available for the m17 as an upgrade. It is how that information was spread and to what degree.

The acquisition and recent effective merging of Dell and AW will help in these situations I think in regards to official communication channels on what is coming down the pike and what is not and this is a case example as to why CS's need one, unified voice in regards to what is available and what is not.

Even months aqo, did AW ever *officially* make an announcement as to the availability of 4870/4850 cards?

While it definitely sucks they won't be making it to market (something I said months ago), you do have to applaud AW for not allowing them to be introduced with potential or known heating problems.

And on its own, outside of sounding like howitzer under load or the Quad issues, the m17 still packs a wallop for gaming.

the 4850's were last sold to Pmauck were for the M17x i am sure of because when the guy said they had a part number and everything .... they wouldn't give a part number unless they were SURE it was gonna be sold... now the m17 gpu's were still in testing ..... i think a Rep just was stupid and mis understood ..and sold him M17x GPU's and when they went to ship out they were like ohhhh crap

This actually seems the most likely.

I reckon that they still will make some sort of upgrade to the M17's cards (if they can depending on MXM compatibility, I'm not too sure there) but they probably don't want to right now so that people will buy the new M17x...

Maybe in a few months time we will (finally) see an upgrade for our M17s. (We can hope :p)

doubtful now that we found out the makers of the m17 also make the M17x ..... so they would want to keep it on top.... so their would be no conflict in sales and because Dell says what AW can sell in the m17 and dell doesn't want any conflicts in sales

The order confirmation clearly states m17 not m17x, assuming the dell systems only allow reps to select suitable upgrades for suitable machines ( or u would get a quad ordered for an m15) they had to be selectable for m17

ESP as I had an Rma number for my m17 ussing my customer number

no the cards were for the m17

I still think they will offer an upgrade option or the m17 althought it won't be as "all powerful" as the upgrade path for the m17x

I sent Alienware/Dell an email last week, explaining that i feel betrayed with the M17 being treated as "end of life" as no upgrades are available, especially since i only got the damn thing for 4 months.

Then today, i recieved the below email in my mailbox:

    Dear Mr. X,

    Thank you for contacting Alienware.

There is a possibility to upgrade the Graphic card on your M17 Laptop in the future. The graphic option would be a Radeon HD4850 with 1GB video memory. We are also offering this option as Crossfire (two cards).

    Thank you for choosing ALIENWARE.

I say bring it effing on! Good news if this is true! :D.

I have emailed back asking if he had an estimate of when this will be released for current M17 customers.

lol i have known a longer time :D

Like i said before they have had cards, people have seen results.....

    IMO never know

if they did come out in 2.1 variety they would be a very very hot item .... if AW parted them out OMG they could make a killing

they have a 2.1 varity at least in testing we have known that for a long time, so that is not in question.

what is in question is when they release IF they release

tbh if they dont i wont buy AW again, Clevo next time

saying people have seen results doesnt really carry any weight tho imo as i have learnt to be too sceptical with regards to alienware "releases"

clevo are alot cheaper here in the UK and i see no benefit of going with AW again

M17x cost £3000 over £1000 cheaper to get the clevo with twin 280's

It likely will be 4850s if we get an upgrade. Compared to 4870s, it's very, very close. A difference in core and shader clocks of just 50MHz, same number of shaders, and you'll have faster memory that won't currently make much of a difference (and even that is if you get GDDDR5)

As Glzmo said, try to order via phone. You may want to ask in an email to them how you upgrade.

Did they cancel the order?? did they say that they were not going to give an upgrade option at all in the future?

I did search thsi thread before for the answers to these questions but couldnt find them.

they took an order from me for the 4850 1gb card;s in Xfire, they gave me a price, an rma number even arranged for the guy to pick up the laptop

then day before the pick up i got a call from the technical manager, advising me they cant do the upgrade due to a few issues with the upgrade although he was vague about what they were

that was the end of it, they refunded my money

That is some dirty business practice on their part. Is the communication between the management/decision makers and the end people that bad that we have to be dicked around so much like this?! Very bad way to treat your customers.

It's not really dirty, more like incompetent and indecisive. Managers probably got cold feet and decided to reverse the decision last minute due to overheating fears. Reguardless that was under the old AW leadership, the DELLienware leadership I expect to be alot more careful then what happened here.

If they were worried about overheating then they should have said it. Instead of footing around the issue. Like I said, very poor communication at least took place.

Depending on the cost i would go that route vs trying to upgrade.

Might want to really move that machine fast before word spreads the 4850s are out.

    Called Alienware by phone.

They confirmed to me that the upgrade for the M17 is known as the part "M98".
The M98 is a Radeon HD4850 1GB card which is available as master and slave.

I could place this order right away and it would cost me 391.33 euro for a master and a slave card (including shipping) in Europe and you dont need to send your laptop in.

They send them to you via DHL and you can put them in yourself.

You can keep your old cards.

Unfortunatly i am going on a holiday in a few days so i will have to wait with this order.

Maybe someone else who is interested can go ahead and try it (again).
