@Poodle: Dual 7950's is better. Change it if you can. ASAP.

Where can I see some stats on that?

BTW - it really doesn't matter, FFXI is a six year old game and either one of them is massive overkill. I play WoW too on occasion, but I don't play FPS-style games that really need a high frame rate for reaction time's sake. Hell, last weekend was spent breaking out Might and Magic VIII for some good ol' retro-gaming. Anything is better than my current laptop's ATI Radeon Mobility x700. I'm embarrased to own it.

The 7950 is faster than the 8700, you won't find any official benchmarks, there are many theads on here about it. But most report a 10+fps difference in performance.

The 8700 cards are not a bad choice, especially with the new drivers. The AW drivers caused tons of crashes after about 5 mins of use. Take a look at the M9750 Drivers thread, there are a few posts by folks who had issues.

To take full advantage of the 8700 you have to run Vista and SP1. This combined with the 174.xx drivers you'll get amazing gains over older drivers. Plus you get DX10, which I think is just hype, just my opinion. XP SP3 is said to give some good gains also.

yes i applied AS5 to cpu, both gpu's, north & south bridge as well as soon as i got it. your ambient temp must be much lower than mine. i also need to give the AS5 some time to settle in and it should lower my temps. this is my first C2D laptop and i find it strange that they run so hot. but the computer is much quiter compared to my clevo d900t......

i also find it strange that you are idle at over 20c cooler than me. i would like to get other owners to chime in here about their cpu temps.

Funny, I thought the same thing when I got mine. My D900T was incredibly loud compared to the M9750.

Anyway, they say it takes 200 hours for AS5 to work fully. I never run Temp monitors, never had a need, no heating issues. Unlike the D900t where you can get burned just from the GPU exhaust fan.

If I get 2x2gb sticks, how do you think they'll preform?

I actually bought the system with 1gb then had memory from another machine. One card was bad so I combined the one good 2gb and the 512mb module. I returned the bad module but never had time to swap them back.

Anyway, If your running vista the extra 512mb will help a little, probably only gaming you'll get an extra 512mb of room before the system starts to swap. I did notice the difference between 2gb and 2.5gb. The HDD doesn't work as hard and Programs load faster.

But XP will probably not use that extra 512mb unless your running Crysis.

I don't think it is worth the $90 to buy it, unless you have had your system for a month and want to squeeze out a LITTLE more performance. "Don't fix it if it's not broke."

ok can anyone else post your m9750 temps?!

i did some configuring around roday on this machine. i took out one gpu to run it in hardware-based non-sli. the cpu temps were much lower because the gpu on that side was not installed. it would idle at 55c and hit about 66c during load.

then i installed the second gpu and enabled sli. the cpu went back up to idle in the 60's and hit load of mid 70's. it would even hit low 80's today before the fans kicked in harder to cool it down.

so if you post your temps can you state wether you have sli or not and what cards?

@eightd, I was just wondering how your m9750 runs OCd to 2.33 gHz? I couldn't justify the extra 400ish dollars for the 170 mHz upgrade so i went with the 2.16 gHz processor. Just wanted to know if your computer is stable overclocked to 2.33? How are the temps? Have you experienced any problems with it at all? Thanks.

After talking to Argh and noticed that the overclocking of ClockGen actually overclocks other system hardware, I only use overclocking when I need to. When I work, programming, I compile code. Which could take a few minutes. While overclocked, I can get about a 15-30 sec decrease in compile time. I'm not a big temp watcher, so I don't have any stats on that. I may do some over the weekend.

@ARGH, this is getting more difficult then it needs to be. :) MobileMeter is not compatible with Vista's ACPI API, it crashes.

Well until someone else posts some temps, here is some screens of my temps in Speedfan.

i do not run vista. i have xp. i have read speedfan is not very reliable when it comes to temps and always posts 10c lower.

also, speedfan wouild not work for me like it does for you. it would only find temp1 and nothing else. it also would not update the temps at all. always stuck on 64c for temp one.

I know your running XP. Anyway, it looks like your right speed fan has a difference in temps compared to other tools. I tried " Core Temp" and it seems to get temps closer to yours. 61c idle, 80c load, great still not even close to the 100c Limit.

ok thanks for verifying the cpu temps are normal for sli rigs. this is because the 2nd gpu ustillizes the same fan as the cpu.

hey folks i am wondering if some of you can help here with sound quality on this notebook. i am getting bad distortion that seems to be comming from the subwoofer when the volume is quite high. it's most annoying when i am watching something on the net like when someone is speaking.

i tested this with the realtek hd audio manager. it has a built in 3d utility that i use to replicate the distortion. it is called 3d audio demo. in there you can select the buzzing be and manually place it to where the subwoofer. can some of you test this to see if you have distortion?

for me, the notebook hardly has any bass for something that has an integrated subwoofer. i know you cannot expect too much from notebook speakers but i am wondering if my speakers are faulty or if the subwoofer does not work.

I never noticed any distortion with the sound on my m9750 even with the audio turned up. I looked for the 3D audio demo utility you described but could not find it in Realtec HD Audio Manager.
The woofer on the m9750 is not really a woofer. I don't know why they call it that. It is just an extra speaker, maybe a little larger than the two main speakers. I get virtually no bass response with it. If I want to hear full range playback, I use the line-out and plug into my home stereo.

But it doesn't give speed fan...

Hi everyone I know this is a bit off topic but im sure you will all be glad to hear this. Ok now my other halves uncle is a bigwig at DELL and as we all know own alienware. The decision to decline the chipset upgrade possibility for the m9750 to support newer processors was turned down beacuse Alienware believe that they will not profit from it as people will now be more interested with the m17x.

Ok heres the interesting part, he assured me that if it was possible to prove that many m9750 owners would be interested in purchasing the upgrade, then alienware (or more likely DELL) would have to offer it as it would be another big profit turner.

So if we can collect enough names and details to forward to DELL (better DELL than Alienware because although they are still seperate companies DELL have the decision makers), then it is 90% certain that they WILL offer the new chipsets supporting SANTA ROSA. This would also solve many other of the chipset related problems including the notorious RAM issue. Thank you for reading this and if anybody is interested in organising something plase e-mail me at: [email protected]

would this mean the new processors and... 8800m gpus?? even if it's a processor / ram upgrade, it would be very nice.

but, your proposal makes me pretty curious. why are they upgrading the chipset in the m9750s, or rather, are you saying that they can accept to use a chipset that is compatible with the m9750 and other notebooks so m9750 users will be allowed to purchase this as an upgrade? and how does Dell and the m9750 actually relate to eachother? how would Dell upgrade my Alienware?

if your proposal thing is true, i'm all for upgrading my notebook.

Just bought an M17 w/3870's in Xfire so when the 4870's are available I will install the 3870's in Xfire in my M9750. I'd say that's a decent upgrade that ichime has already done to his M9750.

    Hello
I just bought a new M9750. I know it's old, but it's new and it was very cheap. I don't know yet, if it has one or two 8700M GTs. But I have a problem.
I installed Vista x64 on it, and cannot find a driver wich will work on it. I tried laptopvideo2go, 3dguru, originals, but still the same message: "The NVIDIA Setup program could not locate any drivers". I know there is some help for this, but I can't find it.
Oh, and one more question. The Optiarc BD-5500a, can write Blu-ray, or just read? And it has LabelFlash?
Sorry if I posted in the wrog thread.
    Thanks

Oh... I see it. Enjoy it, it is still a great machine and can handle very well most of the games you can throw it.

Start finding your system specifications. There are many free programs in the internet to do this besides the many tools that Vista / XP has

    Welll...

    You could try first here:

    http://support.alienware.com/Support_Pages/Restricted_Pages/driver_downloads.aspx

However you will find that the M9750 doesnt have official Vista64 drivers (just 32). So you can try to contact someone with your same system here in NBR who has installed Vista64.

Or... you can try any driver search software, such as Driver Detective. The bad news is that almost any of these software is free.

Good luck... if I were you I would try Vista32

Greetings. I just ordered my first Alienware laptop. I realize the m9750, isn't the best of the bunch, but the options and price fit my needs. I would have preferred going the SLI dual card route, but I was afraid that the laptop would run hotter than I'd like (I'm taking the laptop to Kuwait). The only question I have not resolved is what version of Vista Home they would have installed (32 or 64 bit)? I decided to go cheap on the DVD and Hard Drive option. I can't even fill my old laptops 80 GB HD, let alone 160GB. My main focus for this laptop is for LAN gaming. The first time they sent us to Kuwait, 6 of us would bet together each night and play COD2 on an 8 port switch. This time we may try it on a wireless N router (we had too much lag on the wireless G router).
