I was just curious, what is the scale of the "Windows Experience Index"? I don't have vista (much less vista ultimate) and I'm curious to know at what point a rating means your computer is "good"

yeah, it's my flash- it's black and very nice. if you measure the unit from the table to the top of the palm rest, it's a little over an inch. it's def. under 1.5 overall.

Actually, the 8800M GTX is 2.5 times faster than the 8700M GT, not 40%. Really nice machine! How's the screen?

Also, mrwater, that thing on the touchpad -- is that some type of protective covering, or did AW change the touchpad design at the last minute?

included with the laptop were 2 tactile stickers for the touchpad. one has the glyphs, one does not. i used the glyphs because it looked cooler. i put it on earlier today before i plugged in the mouse, and it helped a LOT.

the touchpad kind of sucks as far as accuracy goes. its not unusable, but without the sticker, it's not that great.

Great pictures! Thanks for posting about the arrival of your new beast. I didn't expect anyone to get theirs that fast. It's a welcome change to see new units out the door relatively quickly. When the M9750 came out, it took much longer for them to get in the hands of customers.
Not on these forums please; as noted, it is against the forum rules.

Is this a permanent sticker, or can you remove it when you're not using your touchpad?

GReat stuff Mrwaters. Looks awesome. Go enjoy some gaming!

There is a website I frequent often for digital cameras and we often get lurkers on there pretending to be from such and such company dishin products but never really coming up with anything substantial, so take all posts with a grain of salt unless they are backed up with something concrete!

After playing some vid games for a while let us know if the heat builds up or the fan noise increases. Sounds like its performing awesome so far!

Does the AW's have a manual FAN speed control like the Dell xps m1710. I have been using Ik8fangui and it works great when gaming. Helps you just squeeze a litle more out of your system.

I was playing crysis for 15 minutes, and the hottest it got was 74 degrees C. I turned the game off and about 2 minutes later it's down to 59 degrees C.

I experienced 1 little glitch while palying crysis, a discoloration where a bunch of red/green boxes popped up on the screen, this only happened for a split second, and didn't happen again. I am leaning towards this as a game problem, and not a laptop problem. I've had video cards overheat, and they would not correct themselves after the glitch.

the fans did not get any louder, you can clearly hear the fans, but they are not offensive. they are loud, but not as obnioxious as a desktop pc.

Crysis is an awesome game. I'm waiting for my 360 wireless adptr to come so I can play it on my HDTV using a wireless 360 controller :)

you can hear them, they are loud. but the sound they make is not offensive. i've had computers where the fans are soo crazy, but these fans give a soft blow.

you WILL hear them though, and i'm sure they're even worse for the 8800 models.

Crysis on High Settings??? What am I doing wrong with my computer? I have Dual 7950s, which dominate the 8700, and I can only run this on medium with playable frame rate. I have the 1440x900 screen. Is my CPU the problem? I have tried like 8 Different drivers.

Thanks for the reply. Are they noisy when you're just surfing and doing basic stuff or when pushing the machine? I wonder if there is a difference when running on the integrated video?

yes they're noisy when you're just surfing the web, or doing anything :) it's not that bad, i'd rather hear fans and know my laptop is cool then not and have to send it in ;)

crysis- i had to reduce a few more things as i played, and i lowered resolution. i dont mind 20 to 25 fps though.

the only video camera i have is a sony cybershot, and its a pain in the ass to upload youtube videos.

to try and clear up the fan issue is pointless, everyone has different tolerence levels, and my m15x has an 8700. the 8800s might be 2.5 times louder since they're much more powerful ;)

one issue is that the touch controls can be unresponsive. idk why, but i cant use the volume slider now. who knows?

Agreed, thanks for sharing with us.

About the fans, thats the thing - if a machine with an 8700 has noisy fans that run even during non-gaming activity, what the heck is an 8800 model going to sound like?

Hate to say it, but you might have defective touch controls. Or maybe you should try reinstalling Alienware's custom drivers.

Are you able to look inside? Any chance of changing CPU on your own? Does it have WWAN slot in there, also known as Mobile Broadband PCI Express Mini Card slot? (it should look very similar to WLAN slot) Thanks!

yes, 8800m GTX is much more powerfull, yet it uses the same TDP as it does 8700m - 35 watts. So there is very little chance it will be any difference in cooling methods. Nvidia has done some thorough work on 8800m to make it cooling efficient, other part of it uses 65nm chip while 8700m 80nm...
So I dont think 8800m should be any louder
