your windows experience index shows 4.8 with 2gb ram, would 4gb give 5.9 rating?, or it depends on manufacturer?! anyone know?

 

It all depends on the speed of teh ram and size. But Ram has been an item that is always strange with windows experience score.

I had cheap ram 2gigs. Had a 4.8 score. Installed lower cas rating rating and 4 gigs and score 4.6. So I coudl never care too much about he ram score.

 

please mrwater run in stealth mode, with integrated GPU and tell us if the fans ever stops or if there's less noise

 

How well does the magnetic latch hold the lid shut? Is it easy to open? Thanks for taking time to answer questions.

 

The WEI is not a good indicator of system performance. Here are some benchmarks you can use to test the system out:

Entire system: PCMark05
Graphics: 3DMark06, Crysis, other new games like Bioshock, CoD4
CPU: wPrime, 3DMark06 CPU test, Cinebench 10
Hard Drive (HDD): HDTune

did you get a smart bay harddrive. I wanted to know if there was a regular screw to dismantle the hardrive from the smartbay so i can swap it with another hard drive

The tuner is definitely new. I've been checking the page almost every day waiting for the new configs. Those media options weren't there before.

**** this, I hate Alienware doing this **** to people. Yeah, I know, even if some people got this laptop in the US doesn't mean anything to global M15x sales...but Europeans at least should get some infos about it.

i'm sorry guys, my internet was down the past day and a half. turns out it was a faulty splitter.. piece of crap.

anyway, i have work in an hour so i'll read through this thread and try and help later

 

I have found out that the touch center controls at the top of the laptop seem to become inactive after my computer goes into sleep mode.

I also have issues with restarting the computer or shutting down. 50% of the time, the computer locks up on the vista shut down screen. Weird...! It starts up very quickly though.

 

That is just vista tidying up all the mess made in the ram. It actually is not probably frozen... just takes a loooooong time. All the settings changed, all the programs cached, all the files edited, the updates, the encryption, the drive locking... etc...

How does your 2099 model have AlienFX?

 

hmmm... strange is the box running Alienware pre-install. vista - I really hope this is not due to sluppy testing by Alienware. Have U installed SP1 RC? And the latest nvidia drivers from nvidia.com?

Turns out the 2099 model also has alienfx lights for everything except the keyboard Maybe they'll take them out totally for the cheapest model, but very few people will probably order that one, and they could just leave it in.

I just ran 3Dmark06, got 5430. On the report alienware gave me, it said my computer had a score of 5700 or so.

Maybe I need to update drivers? These are from august.

The drivers they have are the ones on the alienware site, 156.55 (7.15.11.5655)

5430 is a good 3DMark06 score for the 8700M...look at other laptops with the same graphics chip...that's toward the higher end of scores...most other 8700M laptops are in the high 4000's...

And the drivers currently on your laptop should have been the drivers that Alienware used to get 5700...I'd give them a call if you're worried about it...upgrading drivers on laptops can be a messy proposition...

Nothing more tedious than having to use your restore CD on Day 2 and then re-install your software/games...newer drivers may improve your 3DMark06 score, and a slight gain in fps on some games, but you run the risk of losing features that Alienware specifically designed into the m15x...I might be a bit worried about what a different set of drivers would do to the BinaryGFX...at least check with Alienware...

 

so stealth mode just turns fans of and make computer very hot??.. do the fans come on to cool it back down to 55 degrees? or does it just stay around 55..

 

Based on the leaked configurator, you'll be able to add the backlit keyboard for around $40 as a BTO option.

 

I would question whether AW runs 3dMark06 at the same screen resolution as the free version of 3dMark06 that most of us use. If they ran the test at a lower resolution, this would explain the higher score. In any event, the 3dMarko6 scores are meaningless when it comes to game performance. Run some frame rates on your games and compare them to what other people on this forum get with the same setup as you when they get their 15X's.

 

Atleast Alienware does these tests. You have a lower chance to get a defective unit, which is great. I think they might've made the testing better with the release of the m15x.

 

i would think that the m15x should get mid 6000 at least....unless im overestimating the power of the 8700. but then again, 3dmarks don't really tell much in regards to real performance. man i want m17x sooo bad now.

BTW mrwater, does the shiny surface of the laptop sticky as finger prints appear fast?.

Also, does the keyboard feel hot when u play.

I'm with you, man. How long have you had your mALX? I'd guess it's still maxing out every game except Crysis.
