The new ASUS G751JY also comes with a 230w PSU.
Certain Clevo models START at 230w, but offer an upgrade to 330w (such as Eurocom Configure Model) -
I dunno where you guys are looking for it to say the 17 comes with a 180w supply when everywhere I've seen it only says ' 8-cell Lithium Ion 92 wHr '. When I look at say notebookcheck G751s come with 88wHr so I dunno what you guys are on about unless I'm not understanding power stuff... which I don't. :/
-
The 8-cell thing is the battery. What's more important about driving the components to their stock power is the charger/power supply, which is 180w for the 17 R2.

If Dell manages to launch one updated graphics driver for the G/A such they could with my Alienware 17 Ranger then I will be very impressed by Dell ..

Haha, I appreciate the joke! That's what I'm worried about Dell doing!
MickyD has bought an A17 R2, and the inventory listing he received shows a 180W power supply. (If it's listed anywhere else I do not know).MickyD1234 likes this. -

Dunno where this info about being tied to dell for the GA drivers is coming from but I just read up on the R2 documentation released recently and they state you use the driver recommended by the card OEM. The only pain is that they say over and over don't plug or unplug without shutting down - fair enough.
I'm guessing none have shipped yet and they are waiting until the last moment to release the mobile NV driver, or the latest one is causing a problem? It is strange that all the drivers are there except NV
.
-
Oh okay thanks for showing me that. Well then I guess we'll have to wait for the early adopters to get their copies to test if the power is enough won't we? :/
-
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
Yup
. I don't have any desktop cards laying around so I might just get a used one for testing. I'm not thinking of using it for a year or so and if the machine can't cope well with the latest games right now it goes back.
I will of course be seeing if my 240W PSU works and makes any difference... -
Robbo99999 Notebook Prophet
Yeah, TomJGX was saying that you needed to use a Dell graphics driver in order for the GA to work - but to be honest I don't know where he got that info from & I don't know if it's true. At the moment I'm suspending my judgement on whether or not the GA is gonna need a Dell driver specifically. -
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
I really can't see it needing a dell driver. They would be tying themselves to providing a driver for all sorts of hardware!
ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-prod...aptops/alienware-17-r2_User's Guide_en-us.pdf check out the last page. -
I can confirm this as well. My purchase order shows a 92whr battery and 180w psu.
-
Robbo99999 Notebook Prophet
Ah right, given the following that they say in the Troubleshooting Section:
"[If graphics card is not detected] Download and install the latest driver for the video card installed in the Alienware Graphics Amplifier. For more information, see the document that came with the video card you purchased. NOTE: The graphics card is sold separately."
Then this indicates that you download the regular NVidia driver from the NVidia website. Good, panic over, looks like that previous rumour is disproved! (Haha, we can see how unsubstantiated rumours start!)Ashtrix likes this. -

Yeah, I guess it will disable Optimus as well since the desktop drivers don't use it??
Forcing a Dell driver would be a deal breaker for a lot of people. We all know how well Dell keep on top of driver releases! -

'Shrug' I was planning on waiting for their next discount sale before considering a purchase over a G751 anyway so maybe by then they would of written an apology letter and slapped themselves in the face. Personally the power wattage is the only deal breaker for me. 16G ram is more than enough for me and I can always buy an external dvd reader if I wanted. Onboard socketed stuff? Only option 2016+ I bet so I'll be getting used to it early.
-
Robbo99999 Notebook Prophet
Yes, I think it will disable Optimus too. That could be a good thing, maybe you can overclock the display then, run it over 60Hz, which is an option open to people without Optimus. -
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
What desktop card you looking at micky? 970 seems to be the sweet spot on the desktop from from the green camp right now. Red side both the 290 and the 290x are starting to get super cheap to compete with the 900 series nvidia gpu''s. Really can't go wrong either way.
-
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
Not really in the market right now. Hopefully the machine will fit the bill for my gaming out of the gate.
I like the look of the EVGA kingpin 980 but it has 3 power connectors and I never like power splitters. I was also hoping for a dual (SLI) card to come along. Downside of that is that the dell documentation states that only an external monitor can be used with dual GPU cards

Hey guys, sorry about the ignorance on the matter here, but when you guys say something like that:
The HQ processors are that bad? I'm trying to decide between the MSI GT80 Titan with de I7 4980HQ and the Clevo P377SMA with I7 4910MQ.
On CPU benchmark Passmark
CPU Mark 4980HQ= 10060, 4910MQ = 9787
When you say that the HQ are bad, you guys are saying that they don't have the same overclock potential that a MQ have?
I wont be benching on it and not going to overclock either. Just want a machine that will allow me to game on high settings for the longest time possible.papusan likes this. -

I think its kinda sad personally that according to Passmark the Intel Core i7-4710HQ is only 42% faster than my almost 4 year old 2630qm if I did my math right. Sure its faster, but not fast enough if you know what I mean.

You did your math wrong. It's 42% faster.
-

thanks for the correction.... fixed.

It's because the HQ are soldered to the motherboard and MQ are socketed. If an HQ fails you have to replace the whole motherboard and whatever else is soldered on it.
The MQ isn't as overclockable as the MX as far as I remember. -
If you buy a laptop with socket processor you can at least upgrade to a extreme processor "that is the last Upgrade" to Your laptop. CPU benchmark test in the PassMark is unable to squeeze processors long enough or hard enough. During a tougher and longer cpu benchmark test comes the processor to be throttled due to the rotten power setting in bios on several laptops with soldered garbage hardware (certainly more energy friendly as little overclocking friendly). A minimum CPU benchmark test is a Wprime1024 or Xtu benchmark test. It does not help what the Hell what (bga)processor you have if power settings in bios on the laptops is crippled. I reckon that a portion of the space on the die on the Intel Hq processors are made for a more powerful intel graphics. Even less overclocking friendly. Who needs a more powerful intel graphics in a gaming laptop? It is impossible to believe that a soldered HQ processor can be as overclocking friendly such as an extreme or Mq processor. When manufacturers betting on soldered hardware is there because of the energy friendly hardware. Just look at BGA desktop processor to Intel; i7-4770R. It has the same max turbo as a i7-4770k but have lower TDP. Such can this be, when the processor includes a more powerful intel graphics ... Bga Garbage.... You are thereby already warned. Dellienware getting at least not my hard earned money more.. They have now designed gaming Laptop Garbage. Apologize my poor English.Last edited: Jan 21, 2015

I just ran Passmark just now and got 6664 CPU points, so 4710HQ in an average configuration is only 18% faster than my 2630QM, how's that for progress over 4 yrs! But to be honest my fast RAM and Throttlestop modifications have narrowed that gap, ('stock' 2630QM only scores 5576 vs the 6664 of mine)!bigtonyman and papusan like this. -
I7-4980BGA soldered garbage is the most powerful laptop processor Intel producing to the laptops now in 2015 .. My i7-4930Mx running on an ok Overclock has cpu score on 11500p in PassMark while 17-4980BGA is 10060p !. i7-4980Bga came out almost two years later, than my Mx processor ..
How's that for progress over 2 yrs!
Ashtrix, Robbo99999 and TomJGX like this. -
Your processor and laptop can at least overclock ..
it is not certain that New laptops with Garbage soldered hardware, fragile power supply and crippled power setting can do ..
-
Then the 4710HQ score is way low too, as that's less than the 27% difference in clock speed (3.3 GHz vs. 2.6 GHz), to say nothing of IPC improvement from Sandy Bridge to Haswell which is another 15-20%. Also keep in mind the 4710HQ can be overclocked by 200 MHz unlike the 2630QM which is completely locked. Anyway, there's a reason I never trust PassMark as I've said many times in the past.
-
PassMark CPU test is useless for testing processors. Passmark is more an overall test of all standard hardware. This Passmark cpu test can not squeeze processor until throttling.
-
Robbo99999 Notebook Prophet
Unfortunately the 2630QM can't overclock, but I've been able to unlock the TDP restrictions by using a combination of XTU & Throttlestop, so it can run at 56W and full turbo all day, which is supported by the good cooling system - and combined with the overclocked RAM results in far greater performance than a run of the mill 2630QM in a poorly cooled laptop, that's why the difference is so big in contrast to a regular 2630QM.
Yes, I agree, I think it's because the PassMark scores stored are averages of many systems, some with poor cooling & no 200Mhz overclocking. Also, in my reply to Papusan above you can see that this would further narrow the gap to an average 4710HQ. No doubt a fully optimised 4710HQ operating in a system with good cooling, no unnecessary TDP restrictions, and a 200Mhz overclock would be way faster (50% faster perhaps than mine) - that's just not normal though.papusan likes this. -
Thanks for the correction .. I meant exactly what you said. I guarantee that cooling on new thin (Alienware or simular) laptops are worse than if laptop is thicker. This will also affect the potential to a small Overclock. This comes laptop manufacturers to take into account when they make power setting in the bios. = Crippled. You see it already with the downgrade of the power supply to the New Alienware 15 and 17. (180w)Robbo99999 likes this.

Well..
Despite all the negativity, I've ordered a new AW machine(AW18 770m SLI was my old)
The new 17" with the best speccs(500 m2 ssd etc), expected delivery Feb 22.
I do agree that Dell are going the wrong direction with this BGA "crap", and that long time fans feel they get a lesser product!
When that is said, the main reason I'm choosing AW again is the Next Buisness Day support.
I tend to buy a new system every 2-3 years, and if a CPU or GPU should fault, I realy don't care if Dell have to change the motherboard to fix it. That's theire problem ,and comes with the support. If I bought a ASUS, and something happens, the wait time to fix it would be 3-4 weeks.bumbo2, steviejones133 and MickyD1234 like this. -

Haha, for me the first up against the wall would be the treehuggers that are the root cause of all this low-power trash. Governments listen to their lies and half-truths (and it's a vote winner) and apply pressure to industry. Industry rolls over in the face of potential legislation, and we end up here.bumbo2, Ashtrix, steviejones133 and 2 others like this. -

Spot on, mate. If a 'tree-hugger' wants an eco-computer, Intel & any computer manufacturer should be able to cater for those people without having to cripple the enthusiast. This whole 'eco-warrior' idea has gone nuts - it's a buzz word at best, coupled with a healthy dose of political correctness. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for trying to do my bit, but not at the point when it becomes forced on us as individuals and leaves us no choice of power & performance over saving the planet. God only knows how this kind of logic would impact a whole plethora of other businesses if they all adopted the same logic as Intel.......there'd be people driving round in gimped Ferrari's that are speed limited to 50mph and run on carrot juice to save on pollution, wearing hessian sacks instead of designer clothing to minimize production footprints and instead of using a mobile/cell phone, they'd be trying to converse via smoke signalling!
Is a gimped BGA chip gonna save the planet? - hell no. But as long as these manufacturers can tout that they are trying, they think it's all good when it ain't. -
On the topic of IPC...
I compared some CineBench, wPrime and SuperPI scores between Ivy and Haswell, and Haswell has +100 IPC advantage in single threads which widens to +300 in multithreaded benchmarks. I can also add that my SuperPI score for my 4930K @ 4.5GHz and 4900MQ @ 4.4GHz are within 0.2% of each other. -

Fact is we already well on that road. The EU laws on power consumption of household goods became law this year. No more buying a cheap vacuum with a big motor, gotta be one of the high-efficiency ones. Of course Dyson was the only manufacturer that supported the legisation. All his products already complied. But for us the consumer we have to pay +50% (or more) for the privilege of saving electricity and still getting a working vacum cleaner.
I haven't read up on all the legisation but even a coffee maker that does not fully power down after 45 minutes is illegal now - no more leaving that pot on the warmer.

Yeah, that retarded tree-hugger cancer is firmly rooted in politically-correct Corporate America, along with "acceptance" and "tolerance" heresy. I know of people that have lost their job for expressing disagreement with indoctrination efforts. Very sad to see it metastasizing and corrupting things relating to PC enthusiasts. The EU muppets would pass legislation on the density, capacity and thermal conductivity of a hot water bottle if they could. I imagine something like "You can't possibly have a hot water bottle that is significantly above body temperature, we need to regulate this so that the maximum temperature is no greater than human body temperature to avoid possible scalding and/or burns - yada yada yada"......thus negating the point for having a hot water bottle in the first place! (not to mention the dynamics of actually boiling a kettle to fill said hot water bottle - the impact on the environment for doing that could be catastrophic).
It remind me of the EU 'proposed' legislation that stated that a banana must not have a certain amount of 'curvature' or 'bend' in it...... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commission_Regulation_(EC)_No_2257/94#Bent_bananas - totally banana's !!!!!
Damned pesky bendy banana's - they should all be straight, goddamit! -

Too funny. I spent 20 years working in standards development (and helping the yanks get CE & ISO) and you sound like you could have been on one of those incredibly boring committees evolving standards.
Those EU prats have to justify their existence and the green ticket is a godsend to them...saving the planet.
Anything you buy with an energy star rating is just preparation to incorporating it into legislation.
Yeah, this subject rattles my cage every time - I've seen it from the inside.
