So does it mean the 980m gtx with 8GB will work on any AW18 machines?

I understand, but I think putting a Haswell desktop chip in a laptop is just a bad idea. Sandy and Ivy Bridge were ok because they didn't run stupid hot like Haswell, and weren't power hogs.

Do you live in Alaska? :p

Wow, that sounds exactly what I am looking for... more monster, less "efficiency" crap. What's the big deal with 400W and 95°C? Just get a bigger PSU and better cooling. It would be worth it for the extra performance. Maybe not the best idea for a laptop, but if you've got a desktop, you can just use two 1.5kW PSUs if you need to.

It really all boils down to thermals. From what I've read, it seems once past some threshold TDP (maybe 400W or less) heat transfer from die to IHS becomes the bottleneck, so short of extreme cooling temperature is going to become uncontrollable. Delidding is an option but the IHS being soldered makes it that much harder. Basically with the 5960X thermals prevent aggressive overclocks.

    That's coz he's john lol

On a more serious note I don't think 3DMark11 is causing his 5960X to pull over 400W. In any case though a custom loop is pretty much a must if you intend to run 5960X to its fullest potential.

Heh I used to dream of building a quad SLI rig, then realized I'd promptly trip the circuit breaker since my room is on a 15A circuit shared with the living room. In fact I'm kind of paranoid to even go over 1000W at the wall LOL. (realistically I probably have about 1200W available even with all lights switched on in the living room)

And this is why I'm loving Maxwell right now -- with 2 Gigabyte 970s OC'd to 1506 core 7600 mem and 4930K OC to 4.5GHz @ 1.39V I'm pulling between 520-540W at the wall in Crysis 3.

It's possible they could have redesigned the AW 14, but I'm fairly certain that is indeed an AW 13.

+4k screen to add to that list would make it a die hard system.

That would be sweet. Considering Clevo are likely not going to update their P570WM/3 system someone else should take up the mantle of releasing a Desktop CPU, laptop.

Yep, although it's a niche there isn't a really isn't a bonkers DRT available anymore. It's a huge lost opportunity that AW don't make a stupidly powerful no limitations machine anymore.

There's still the very slim chance that Clevo may release an X99 version of the P570WM, although I personally wouldn't hold my breath for it.

Ha without competition from AMD we'd be lucky if Intel doesn't start making BGA only mobile chips. In fact if you google around Intel originally planned on making BGA only desktop Skylake.

That's for the low-end and mainstream market. The HEDT (high-end desktop) aka Skylake-E would still have had a socket, regardless of whether the mainstream was soldered or not.

Intel released an 8-core for the HEDT but didn't have to. Intel's 6-core was faster than amd's 8-core. Intel did it anyways. I'm sure the same will happen with laptops eventually.

The HEDT has historically always been a year behind mainstream, and if the HEDT line is the only line that still uses socketed chips, you bet Intel is going to charge more for them.

Intel released the 8 core most likely because they wanted to sell off their Xeon overstocks. The HEDT chips have always been Xeon converts anyway.

In any case, thus far desktops have been immune from the BGA disease, but if mainstream desktops start getting BGA chips, that does not bode well for the future.

I think all of the Haswell-E processors will be too warm for a laptop. However, the 4930K has been in Clevos/Sagers and is proven to perform just fine.

Broadwell-E is basically a fixed Haswell-E. So, it should be much cooler and less power hungry.

As long as AMD can compete in the mainstream and stick with socket based cpus, intel won't switch. If they did, everyone would switch to AMD for entry/mainstream.

AMD is supposed to finally update their FX series cpus from 2012 with something new, but that isn't until 2016. Let's hope they can compete with Intel this time around.

For those interested in the AW 13:

I found 41 pics of the AW 13 on some Chinese website when a showcase or something was done in Beijing.

    ÍâÐÇÈ˺³ÊÀ¹éÀ´£¡ALIENWARE 13ÐÂƷͼÉÍ_±Ê¼Ç±¾_̫ƽÑóµçÄÔÍø

I also found a website (also in Chinese) that says that the users can connect an eGPU to the AW 13.

(Not sure whether that's old info or not because I haven't been following the AW 13 for a while. :p )

EDIT: The AW 13 showcased here have GTX 860m.

Well, here's hoping they do something specific with a revision to the 18 motherboard as far as fixing the power handling limitations it has, adding a more capable AC adapter than the inadequate 330W unit, and adding 980M SLI.

Thanks for posting that link, I've been doing searches for the last two weeks and those are really solid photos. I like the form factor but I'm a bit torn on 17 vs. 13. I already have an M11x and a Razer Edge (with a broken keyboard dock). Touch on a 17 would be the icing on the cake.

Quick question, does the 18 have a 120 mHz screen?

The crazy part is the 17 in order to repaste cpu or gpu you just take bottom off laptop unscrew heatsinks and your done. On 14 and 18 you have to dismantle half the laptop just to get to the components. If so happy I got the 17 in regards to that. I'm not sure how the 13 would be as far as maintenance

Ah thx. Yeah they are, I just figured I don't need another mobile system that will be underpowered in a year and a half. When I got the m11x r3 (they only had 1gb GPU available for Canada at the time) games started to shutter a lot after a year. If I were to get the 17 I would go through HIDEVOLUTION and supe it up with the latest and greatest. I own my own business so I can expense under my own company.

According to the roadmap for Skylake and Broadwell chips, Only the Skylake S will feature an LGA115x socket rest all H, Y, U all series from Skylake are gonna be soldered BGA crap & Broadwell-E will sport an LGA2011-v3 socket, Plus a H version (maybe mobile CPU) will also be a sockted one unlike the skylake version. So maybe the Broadwell version (H series) of 17 and 18's will be upgradable...

Last year, when they presented the new lineup at E3, the new products went on sale the next morning. So, don't expect to wait much longer. :D
