I don't understand why you were even affected by the shortage to begin with if you ordered 6 weeks ago. I placed my order on July 30th and have had my 18 for over a month.

He's waiting on a system replacement - he did not order a new system. New orders have priority over replacements (I believe). Add that to the fact that they're low on parts = delay. I'm not sure why there hasn't been any progress on the replacement status, though. That's concerning, to say the least.

There just should have been progress... They refuse to even estimate when I'll receive it, or did refuse, until this person I spoke to today, who genuinely felt like was going to help. However, as sad as it sounds, I have to see progress before I believe it at this point. I've been in this loop where things felt/looked like they were getting done.. and well, here I am right ?

Do you think it could be because you're based in Canada, but went through the US BBB so there is a conflict to resolve since the Canada folks are supposed to solve it, the US people have to follow some US BBB guidelines which conflicts with the Canada based of service that Dell has setup/structured?

Your case just seems so out there that something must be complicating the situation for resolution...at least that's what I'd like to believe...

I'm not sure, but it does not sound like any decent excuse for things not to work properly. Large corporation that's been around for years should be able to resolve things rather quickly and efficiently imo.

It is more because you got approved replacement on the worst possible time. Few months after a brand new design have been unleashed.

Tons of customers ahead of you in the waiting line that have paid for theirs. Not that I agree with Dell that you should have to wait until all of these have recieved theirs.

Anyone thats had an Alienware delivered by Walsh Western know what this means

    07/09/13 10:30 CHINA DEPARTED MANU.FACILITY
    07/09/13 02:30 PENDING.

Does that mean its still pending to depart the manufacturing facility, or pending getting to the next place? Or something else entirely?

Yeah that departure message means it starting to move to gather the sum of its parts and arrive at your door.

I spoke to AW today, and finally my machine is being tested/done building. Should ship out anyday and arrive the next. Probably Wednesday/Thursday.

Goodstuff woodz. My alien ware got delivered to my parents house today (I didn't want it delivered to my apt as I live in a college town and I feel it would be whisked away within minutes of dropoff on my deck) so I'm going to pick it up from my parents house tomorrow. Very excited for the new laptop, been over a month since I've been without one.

niice. gratz. hope its everything you wished.

I've started to wonder how they ship windows on the machine, but it doesn't have a dvd-rom, so it can not get a re-install....

do they ship you a usb stick with winodws on it if you needed to re-install, like if you say - cleared all data with the RAID tool before even booting into winDoh'S!

I ask, because their quad play is a 3 drive setup... with one loose..

though ! I think the intel rapid storage technology can just merge the 4th if you like.

I'm wondering what RAID levels are supported by the controller / chipset though.... can we do RAID 5 ?

Can we do RAID 0+1 EVEN ?

or we always stuck with stripping / simple mirror ?

Anyways, I found out AW is only giving me 30 days extra warranty when they send me my replacement, regardless that it took 13 months, to get a working machine.

I will have to report them , if anything comes up, on violation of:
consumer act protection in quebec :p
even on their site, it quotes this, incase you would purchase or buy extended warranty, as you automatically have 3 years by default on small electronics under 1000$ and usually upwards 5+ on anything prices 5k or more.

course, a lawyer would need to cite things that have gone to court and what was ruled already etc...

just thought to add this bit of info for people who live in Canada/Quebec especially.

My uncle had a ipod from 2001 break down on him, he had no receipt, warranty waaaay over. But filing a complaint, they replaced it brand new. Course its just an ipod... but it was clearly stated in the law. By normal use and stuff, its rated MTF was waaay over the time he had it, so it should work.

and if I asked, what do you do when you have no cd-rom device...

...And you use the RAID options from hardware that show up before you boot an OS... you know the F10 options or something

    Its not hard to do

okay.. before you ever boot to your windows, you happened to check out the raid utility and created a new stripe with the 4 drives...

you have no more windows, nor is it recoverable. You can not boot to windows to create this usb drive... derp..

what does AW do for you ?

Is this whole concept just too difficult for anyone to understand ? Theres a eleven year old near me that gets it...

Why not just make a recovery CD out of one single drive, and then apply Raid0/1/2/4:whatever after doing a fresh install/recovery?

Ordered mine on Aug 25th... EDD 9/11 (for some reason changed to 9/10 and from 2 BD delivery to Next BD)

Woke up today to find order delayed to October 3!! Kept calling up all their departments, had order expedite messages sent from three different dept., now I have a personal extension for a supervisor, and I'm told to call everyday to ensure that I get it on time. He said I should expect it to be shipped in the next 24 hours. I sure hope so.

    Did you receive yours woodzstack?

Like someone else said, this is really just an end user being really stupid. If you don't know what you're doing and you're going around recreating a stripe volume, I sorta look at that and just laugh and sorta say you deserve to be messed up actually...sorry, but most regular consumers won't be hitting F2 or what not to change bios settings. Especially people knowing they might break stuff.

To solve, you call AW and they will probably send a tech or a USB drive with the O/S image...

We all know you're pissed off to no end about your situation, and you're probably just venting, but no sympathy here from me for anyone (you included) doing things like that...when it's almost the same as saying what will happen if I just pick up my machine and toss it on the floor...

When I first got my wife's Alienware a few years back, first thing I did was do a backup to DVD...With this new machine, I'm more adventurous and haven't done that yet, but I am just using the machine normally and not really blowing things away for fun. The AW will even remind you to do all that backup stuff so they do make some effort.

I actually just did a windows system restore since I destroyed my fonts and my calculator program wasn't working due to the fonts being messed up due to an old program I installed...

Bam, All back to normal...and working again.

I really wonder if a lot of problems people have are due to user error rather than AW screwing them over...Even though it's recommended a lot, I think anytime anyone reloads the O/S, you might break stuff actually and it won't work as before. Even in my old jobs where we deployed thousands of laptops, the IT folks do tend to test their builds and it mostly works. I assume AW did the same.

Maybe I lucked out, but no real issues here other than my AlienwareFX freezing...Course, I spent 10 years pretty much working on all manner in tech so maybe I debug differently...and over 20 working with PCs as well...

I know someone else has a sound issue and a few other things, but I gotta say mine is working pretty much so far as expected...

well, I was wondering if DELL uses any sort of PXE server as well, instead of MAC addresses it could easily be made to only work with AW machines, with a service tag etc.. and you just connect and reinstall, course.. guess you couldn't do that from home, now that I think of it..

Though I'm relatively sure they use a PXE deployment server for their installations, no ? would be kind of weird with a usb.... or something along those lines. meh..

I am venting, Im sick and tired of waiting. Monday, was told it would be 24-48 hours max in testing and I would 100% garunteed be getting the machine delivered before the end of the week... derp, not I got an email tonight saying it was be 5-7 business day... meaning.. the end of next week. next week would mark 7+ weeks..since the last update in order status, but 11 weeks since I was promised the replacement. that's 3 months almost. 1/4 of a year. a whole season. That's sort of ridiculous.

Finally got my 18 last night - ordered on Aug 4th.

On Tuesday Dell initially claimed it was going to take 14 days to ship the completed laptop from their AU distribution centre to New Zealand, but then 24 hours later it arrived.

All good so far. No build quality issues at all, am blown away by the quality of the screen. Performance overall is exactly as advertised.

With stock drivers and clocks I'm getting 11300 ish with the free 720 version of 3dmark 11.

Looks like most 32 bit software can only see 3gb of the 4gb video memory on each card.

Oh, out of the box SLI was disabled for some reason ... Took me an hour to figure that out.

Nope. Not shipped yet. Its been built, and such, for almost a week. Just has not shipped yet for some odd reason, unless I'm being lied to, and its not finished being built yet.
The only way I discovered it was being built and finished, is I had to take some small legal action on dell to get someone higher up to help connect me with people who could tell me what is actually going on.
30 minutes later, the support rep, Susan from my case with BBB said "you need to understand James, the graphics cards, the 780's are baaaaacck ordered, we work things by priority, you will be served when it is your turn.."

Are you F-ing kidding me, after nearly 11 weeks of waiting, I'm not on the top of the priority list yet ? F- you DELL is what I have to say.

Anyways, that's just 100% bull. I'm F-ing sick of dealing with liars. Anyways, I was told the information was written in the same easy to access file, and she knew. There also has been no report of anything backordered or parts shortages in weeks with DELL for the 780m's. I have called in nearly everyday, and asked. They do all confirm there WAS a few weeks ago, a notice in their global shared chat a warning about the 780m's being backordered, but only lasted a week.

yeah, but I've paid money for a computer that never worked as intended and been having issues for going on 14 months. Sick of waiting. Lost a whole year and more...

worst part is, 2 summers in a row. The one time I could actually use the computer when on vacation...

I ordered mine August 25th, with an EDD of September 11.

For some reason it was pushed to October 3rd, but I went crazy and started calling everyone. They shipped it out and I recieved it today (Sept. 12th), only one day late. And for my 'patience' I received a $300 gift card instead of a $200 one.

    Insane right? I got lucky.

Awesome! This is my first time I will be owning an Alienware laptop. After 6 years my Sony 17" Vaio bit the dust 3 months ago. I've been having to lug around my Dell XPS730 on all my trips while waiting for the 780's to come in. I configured the best Alienware I could afford. I started with the second tier.

    32GB RAM
    Dual GTX780 Sli
256GB Solid State Boot Drive, 750GB secondary drive
    Windows 7 Ultimate
Two years pro support, two years Accidental Damage Service
    4800MQ processor 6MB cache
    Free Second day shipping

On-line this package came out to $4,307.00 not including tax. I called in and was able to get this same package for $3704.09. I wish I could have gone for the next tier up with the 512GB SSD and 4900MQ processor but then I would not have been able to afford the two year extended accidental warranty with that package. I thought about not getting any warranty and buying it later but heard that buying the warranty a year after the purchase would be too expensive.

Maybe later I can upgrade the processor if it is not to difficult to do. I may end up extending my warranty in about a year anyway. I got the vindicator brief case for $82.00. It is really top notch in quality but I actually think I will get the vindicator backpack also. I just feel like the backpack is less obvious when I'm traveling that I have something really expensive inside as opposed to the briefcase.

Grabbing that extended warranty was definitely the wiser choice. For future reference: you can use the eGift card that comes with the system to extend the warranty as well. So, you could have 3 years.

4800MQ only needs tweaking, not upgrading ;)

Slap on the extra 10W TDP allowance and +400mhz (to the 4 core so 39/39/39/39) and you are good to go.

Anyone know where I can grab a heatsink or x-bracket for the 780M that would fit the older M17x R4? I found a 780M for a relatively decent price, but I currently have an AMD card.

Also if anyone finds a better price for a 780M please contact me. Cheapest I found is on ebay for 700 USD. Still expensive though.

The X Bracket for the 680M would work.

The backplate for the AMD cards would actually work fine too. Since the GTX 680m, the nvidia cards are compatible with the wider AMD backplates as well.

A backplate from a 7770M fit my 780M quite nicely.

I just got an email that my laptop wont come until 10-16-13. My original delivery date was 9-23-13. What the heck. The 780s are back in stock, why would my order be delayed? The sales rep is trying to sell me a precision instead. I said no way.

I was looking up what the precisions have graphics wise, all a bit weaker at the moment (no K5100M) so yeah I would pass too.

The M6100 AMD is interesting, it's their first mobile part to use the same chip as the desktop 7790.

With the clocks about 70% of the shader (1075mhz stock core clock) performance of the 7970M but with only 55% of the memory bandwidth.

The Precision is a really nice machine. This one will be coming out soon, and for people that like thin and light, it should be excellent. Dell | Dell Precision M3800 Sneak Peek

However, trying to sell that as a substitute for an Alienware is stupid. That would be like trying to sell a pickup truck to someone shopping for a high performance coupe. That makes no sense. The Precision is a high quality business class workstation, not a gaming machine.
