Since when did that happen? I haven't heard of any montevina laptop that can do what the alienware laptops can do.

MICHAELSD01 Apple/Alienware Master
I'm not sure if it made into the Montevina release, but that was one of the features of Montevina when it was announced.
-
The only thing even close to the binary graphics that I have heard about is the hybrid sli from Nvidia, which is supported by the 9series cards, but it requires a nvidia chipset and its only just shown up in the last two days for the desktops. Won't be in laptops any time soon. So that is one thing that alienware does have over a sager.
As for for lethals updated review, I think part of the reason his gaming is so bad, is #1 vista knocks off a fps or two, running games in dx10 has a habit of knocking off another 3-10 fps and using older drivers can knock off another 2-3 fps. Combine that together and you get choppy game play. I know a 8800m gtx can get more than 40fps at 1440x900. He should be getting almost twice that.
Edit and one other possibility is his graphics card is still overheating. -
I remember people going ddr2 was better then ddr when ddr2 frist came out. They ended up kicking them self in the rear for ddr was faster for 14 months untel ddr2 Had more Ram and ran faster
One thing I dont think gpu (GDDR3 memory) use the same Ram as cpus motherboards.
No MICHAELSD01 It will be out next Month and with Intel problem of the new cpu. It could be like the old gen of P4 problems. -
-
-
Rofl lets also not forget that nvidia launched a very expensive brick, I mean laptop when they put a 8800m gtx in a 15.4 laptop. Alienware is well known for releasing overheating laptops, clevo on the other hand has moved well beyond those problems. Also notice how the np8660 won't be offered with a cpu that it cannot support. First clue the alienware couldn't support a extreme cpu was that it couldn't overclock it.

Frist portable computer was september 1975 IBM 5100.
Then came lunchbox computer
IBM pc Convertible was the frist laptop computer. April 1986
In 1987 toshiba T1000 came out. -
-
-
EDIT: I know you're going to say that technically the NP8660 isn't "out" yet, but it's up for preorder, and would probably still ship sooner than an m15x does. -
MICHAELSD01 Apple/Alienware Master
Name one reason instead of price to get a Sager. And build quality has been alright with the m15x for most of the newer ones, plus there aren't anymore downclocking complaints.
-
Guys, it is hard to compare a computer that came out 7 months ago to a computer that comes out in 2 weeks. Do that with any computer and you will see that the newer computer is often "better". However, what is interesting is always by HOW MUCH, and the m15x still beats the m860TU on some points which i think is admirable after Clevo/Sager having time to work on the m860TU for 7 months longer. -
That would require a "Why Sager?" thread =P. But off the top of my head:
Montevina
Way better customer support from what I've heard
I don't know if this counts, but no tax was a big incentive for me. -
-
No Nirvana I was just getting facts. When you seid frist laptop computer. I look at a few computer books. Like upgrading and repairing laptops a few websites and so on.
One fact there Nirvana not Sugar or Alienware made the frist laptop so what is your point? -
2) centrino 2 vs. centrino 1, slight difference, but newer is newer
3) cooler, 25W CPU
4) better customer service, I don't think many people would argue on this. -
So basically, correct me if I am wrong, I understood that part of the question like this:
"You can get better specs at a lower price with Sager compared to AW, with this information why did you still chose to take AW over Sager?" -
-
In my case since I live in France and the CLEVO models are very very expensive compare with DELL or AW.
I do not understand why CLEVO is more expensive in Europe than in the Sates. Probably is related to the low sale volume compare with DELL/AW.
So in a couple word if you want a high end lappy not very expensive you have only 2 options. -
I chose Alienware for a few reasons.
1) I've always wanted an alienware gaming laptop.
2) It is in my opinion one of the best looking laptops around.
3) Excellent customer service from my stand point.
4) One of the best gaming laptops available.
5) One of the best looking LCDs around in my opinion. (Was able to see one at a Dell Store before I bought mine.)
I realize that everyone likes thier own products, but I think this thread really shows how cavalier some people are to put down AW at every turn. It's just another thread that turned into a Sager VS. AW. I haven't been here too long and even I can see the trend. -
Question is what happen if you buy the centreno 2 and it ends up like the P4 Presscott. Where it look fast but Run 20% slower then northwood chips. Man that was funny 5 years ago and it happen on a Clevo Laptops.
what we have is people who like the new stuff and live on the edge and get burn easy. We can look on all the forums with My system is over heating and is not running like it should. We seen alot on Alienware and I seen alot on other fourms.
I wonder if that will be the same with Clevo. -
Well if that is the case OP, disregard my previous post as it is not that relevant. I will give you this answer instead, if I would chose a laptop now then the m860TU would be a very interesting computer and could possibly get my money.
The only things I can see m15x beating the m860TU on right now is battery life, well known brand and design. And portability cause apparently it is smaller/thinner. (I am only interested in 15 inch computers) -
.
-
Haha Svarto dont forget smart bay Hard drives.
-
MICHAELSD01 Apple/Alienware Master
The "only"? That's all of the major stuff. Aside from that, SmartBay, and BinaryGFX, are only in the m15x. The only thing that Sager has going for it is Montevina, which mostly performs the same, and price.
-
@MICHAELSD01, you must be really rich, calling $500 difference "the same". also 25W vs. 35W, that's lot of heat right there.

Question is why not wait untel the new cpu comes out then have this stupid debate?
Why fight about the Unknown. -
MICHAELSD01 Apple/Alienware Master
Montevina came out two weeks ago...
-
And the 3dmarks 06? fps on games and such? Battery life on the systems?
I dont see any? -
-
I dont see any 3dmarks but I did find this tread
Another waiting thread Clevo can't get 9800 NVidia cards, all resellers, Like Sager have no product...
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=279697 -
Yes, but that was confirmed by paladin to not involve the m860Tu, it was only the 5796 model or something. It wasnt a shortgage of GPU it was a shortgage of something else.
-
This tread been Clevo vs Alienware. Why not post 3dmarks for Clevo so it give people COLD HARD FACTS. Why not post urls that Clevo beats alienware.
I dont care if alienware beaten but Please beat them with facts.
So far the Tread acted like two 6 year old going my father is better then your father. -
well, lets stop using "looks" argument in our discussion, cos its personal-i like simple and clean design(like in Mac`s),but others like "AW style" design...so,who agrees with me?
-
Listen I think it depends on the person.
Some like fords some like Chevys.
But for me it depends on the use. -
Sorry to **** on your guys parade, but the OP asked why we still choose alienware. Lets just start out saying that it is a 7 month old model compared to a 2 week to be released model. Clevo is in other words 7 month late, or have had 7 months more time to work on their model.
Ofcourse it is going to be a subjective argument as that is what the OP asked for, why do we still choose AW? Well, it is 7 months old so there arent gonna be any performance arguments as after 7 months (i hope at least otherwise it will be a joke) the competition have to have developed something better. The computer business moves fast, so keeping the lead for 7 months is a long time!
So what I am basically trying to say is that ofcourse it is subjective why we choose AW over Sager right now as it is 7 months old and has been beaten on many fronts, (but on others it is still at the top which I love how all the "pro-sager" people just tend to disregard/forget or completely ignore) so what are you guys really after in this argument? To determine that the m860TU performs better than the m15x? Congratulations, after 7 months clevo finally built something that could perform better. -
just for laughing and stereotyping, this is the difference between an AW user having a problem, and then a Sager/Clevo user having a problem:
Clevo User, topic: "Another minor problem with my NP7660"
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=279739
AW User, topic: "no chipset driver... FTW?!?!"
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=279352
It is a bit off-topic but I just wanted to try and sway some peoples minds of AW is so awful, and Sager is so good. It depends a lot on the difference in personalities of the users that buy these different laptops what and how problems are reported on the forum. Just something for you guys to think about. -
One more thing Svarto you might add is Intel centerno 2 took a longer time then they expected so clevo had to wait longer due to delays on Intel part. Who wants another P4 vs PIII fight. Or Northwood vs Prescott chip fight.
-
Ok... First of all, this thread sounds incredibly like "Why the M15x over the M860TU"...
Appart from that, here are the reasons that lead me to buy the Alienware in the first place:
- The Brand name
- The image that Alienware so well built for themselves
- The fact that the terrorists in many series and movies (like 24 and Die Hard 4, for example) use Alienware with a shinning alien head(I'm joking on this one... although that's true).
- Lack of information about other companies (I mean, when I came here initially I thought "Clevo!?!?! Never heard... I'm sure it's not very good!)
And that's pretty much all. And that's pretty much how AW drives their business. Market themselves as being amazingly great, blind everyone with their neon lights and divert everyone's attention away from anyone else. They alienate people... and people follow.
That's what I think. That's my personal conviction. Who is right, who is wrong? Who knows!?
EDIT: Talking about AW appearence in TV... My favourite scene is in Die Hard, when the bad guy gets angry and throws his AW out of the desk, breaking it into pieces! That alone, desearved an Oscar for the most inteligent scene ever!
-
wow I never seen alienware on tv. My frist computer was a Clevo 8794. Also rebanded Pro Star.
Fact is. I watch the movie to watch the movie. I like the actions I dont care about the computers. I dont watch a movie to buy a item Like a car, computer or Pen. -
Atol, you keep leaving me a bit lost with your comments... I just can't seem to get the point of what you are trying to say, I'm sorry!
Oh, and in case you didn't get it, I was joking with the TV thing. What I said, and I'm going to highlight it again so that you can understand, is that I bought my AW because of the brand image. That's all... And that was me. Ok? -
http://www.alienware.co.uk/sightings_pages/sightings_tvshows.aspx
What seems at first to be silly is actually a very important aspect of Alienware's marketing strategy (which is quite brilliant, ethical or not). Milcs hit the nail on the head: shiny lights, TV show and movie cameos, and plugs from hi-profile users (even fictional hackers and terrorists) get "normal" computer users and casual gamers brainwashed with the idea that Alienware = king of the hill. By the time they've started considering buying one, they've completely bypassed the "research competitors" stage.
Alienware runs their campaign very, very similarly to Mac, although they lack the witty I'm a Mac. I'm a PC. advertisements (they prefer to avoid mentioning the competition, altogether), and they intentionally remain esoteric.
When we get to the checkout lane, we end up paying for those movie cameos and expensive advertisements. That either means that our Alienware product is going to be more expensive, or that Alienware is skimping to make up for the cost.
If I were the only well-known boutique laptop brand in the world, I'd do a little of both.
---
To respond to the original question ("Why do people buy Alienware?"), I believe there are a few possible answers.
Some people buy Alienware because they are often the first to market with new technologies, and competitive tech junkies like to stay on top of the game. Even if other companies are able to beat Alienware's technology, a few months later, there's a thrill and an advantage to having brand new technology the moment it becomes available.
Some other people buy Alienware because their particular configuration is cheaper when bought from Alienware than from the competition. This is especially true for international buyers, as many resellers don't have the global presence that Alienware has.
Some people buy Alienware simply because they don't know there's any competition, thanks to Alienware's brilliant marketing. Those people deserve it. Anyone who drops thousands of dollars on something without researching the competition should not reproduce.
Finally, a lot of people buy Alienware because of the brand promotion, advertising, and aesthetics. The Alienware brand is a status symbol, much like the iPhone, Ferrari, or Starbucks. Sure, you could probably get a better deal or a stronger product if you shopped around, but then you wouldn't have an iPhone.
As far as I'm concerned, there's nothing wrong with any of those reasons, except for the third one. -
Why I choose Sager over the others, not just AW.
First thing, price. If it wasn’t for the price, I wouldn’t have one.
Second thing is the people who own a Sager. I never looked into getting a Sager/Clevo, so I didn’t bother to look in the sub-forum. But when you do visit the forum, not only are the users very knowledgeable, but you also have a slew of resellers/technicians on the forum helping you with your purchase before and after you’ve made the purchase. Are you kidding me???
Third reason is a tie, hands on and the fact of just owning one. I love taking stuff apart, and the ease in which you can work on the Sager is perfect for me. Owning one, gives you a since of pride that you have a well built system, with quality parts.
There is one thing I wish it did have, and that’s an illuminated keyboard. But considering the other things, I’m cool with what it does offer, and a modular bay that is found on my D810 is not something I will miss. I’ve found it easier just to use a USB hard drive, and an extra battery if needed. Considering I’m more interested in the performance, battery life is my least concern. As said…If it were, then an extra battery is no problem. I have a modular bay hard drive and battery. I used the battery maybe one time, and now I can’t even find it.
I would have no problem owning either, but one thing I don’t want is a laptop that will light my room up. I use to like desktops that did that back in the day (I was so dumb), but definitely couldn’t go for that now.
Why Alienware?
