So 780M, 880M and 980M in combination with Win 10 kill the LCD's, what about the 680M? Any reports of screens failing with 680M's? I'm deciding between M290X CF and 680M SLi for my M18x R2, and i'd really like to know if it's safe to use Win 10 with 680M.
Thanks![]()

I wish to see dual m290x working in m18x r2
-
Why not, I'll upload some pics once the second CF capable card comes in somewhere till 11.11...
-
But the real question is, is it safe to use 680M's with Windows 10, i haven't found anything on the matter.
Also, where did the search thread button go?

Alienware with 680M are in a zone of risk too.
-
I never tried 780M with old panel, but I can confirm that 880M is infected as I put it in another functional AW17 (not mine
) and 8 beeps instantly. Took it off and put its original card in (a 770M) and it worked again. BTW that 880M was running on svl7's vBios. If you're still interested based on above info pm me and I'll set up a simple eBay listing for it. Cheers.

Update from me if anyone cares:
Going strong still, about a week and a half. Installed Windows 10. Fully updated. Fresh install.
Running Nvidia driver 358.87 with zero issues also. I adjusted the brightness slider before I installed the graphics driver because for some reason it locks it. Other then that, everything is working as it should.

Yes, working good here too with 358.87

Yah I have two R9 M290X from Dell I'm trying to get working in my M18x R2....I couldn't get my CF cable to fit the slot/connector so I'm SOL. Let me know if you know of a cable that works on it.
-
running modded drivers?
-
Yep. It's been so long since I modded my inf it took me like an hour lol. Kept messing up.
Now that I've said something about my system running great, it just shut off on me without warning so that's cool. Lining up a headshot in Arma and POOF it's off.

Shoot :/, so basically the only thing we can do ATM with nVidia cards is to cut the pin #5?... well GG dell / nvidia / M$
Huh, didn't see that coming, i'll check if the cable i have is ok with the card i've already got here :/... -
Pin #5 is also proven to be placebo as Mr.Fox discovered. No write protection with that.
Just prepare Linux flashdrive and HDMI just in case. -
Oh :/... well that's just great then... is there any way to flash the screen if you have only 1 available?
Yeah just noticed that the CF cable doesnt fit
so much for the big plans....
-
Yeah they changed cf cable in aw18 but as almost no one uses AMD gpus anymore then it can be hard to o obtain such a cable.
-
I'll see if i can source one out.
-
Ok so I'm not the only one that had problems with this, good to know. If you find any, please find one for me too!!
-
I'll try, if i can't find any i'll just split the two cards, one in M17x R2 and one in M18x R1 or R2, depeding on the whole nvidia + win_10 = black_screen issue.
-
I really don't want to do that. I kind of need my radeons for solidworks. Not even the 980M SLI is better for it. I'm checking around to see if/where I can find this stupid cable!
-
I think one seller was asking me if i'll need it but i kindly said no, i'm looking who it was and i'll be contacting them again xD
-
Omg I need it!

Is there any solution for issue right now ? because i am stuck at 353.50 and I want to update ! ( Running Win10)
-
Hmm, i'll see what i can do, i hope he has 2, otherwise i'll just go with 2x single M290X and let you get the cable
Wait, 353.50 doesnt cause black screen?
-
HaloTechnology Notebook Consultant
I dont know I have been running it since Win 10 came out ? -
Just wait. Sooner or later you will have edid crapped.

Are you Sure you are freaking me out me dude ! can anyone confirm this ?
Been running like this for almost 2 months now no problem -
If no problem, just use as is. Avoid any overclocking tools at the moment outside of vBIOS flashing.
-

no flashing but I sometimes use nvidia inspector so I will stop using it -
There is no telling what causes the EDID corruption. Alienware, Nvidia, and Microsoft have all successfully avoided trying to determine the root cause.

Don't use EVGA Precision, that is most likely to trigger the issue (only a couple of people have reported 8 beep issue while never having used EVGA Precision - so there could be another software trigger out there somewhere too).TomJGX likes this. -
Well aparently no1 has any real idea as to what causes it, (yet), let's hope we find out soon, or that it gets fixed...
-
It is likely the only fix is to use MicroSoft, NVidia and Intel approved combinations at stock clock speeds. Any older motherboards and video cards are unlikely to get "official" fixes such as a BIOS or vBIOS update. Even if they find the cause, no company is likely to own up since they would then own all the broken LCD panels.

So I was considering possibly updating my Alienware 18 to Windows 10, has this issue been resolved at this point?
-
Can someone upload sli profile for fallout 4 from newest Drivers please?
-
No pinpoint on the root cause, other than it is somehow loosely associated with Windows 10 and updates that prepare a Windows 7/8 machine for Windows 10. I do not allow Windows Updates on my systems. Clean installing Windows 10 caused EDID corruption on my M18xR2 and Alienware 18. It took longer each time on the M18xR2 and EVGA Precision X was installed. On the Alienware 18 it happened without EVGA Precision X installed and occurred before I was finish installing all drivers and software... within an hour or two instead of a day or two like the M18xR2. If you install the latest version of EVGA Precision X it is 99% certain it will corrupt the EDID. NVIDIA Inspector does not cause any problem.

i am not sure if i want to try win 10 again...so much effort

Not only that, it's simply not worthy of any effort, IMHO. DX12 is still pretty much irrelevant and really, other than someday when DX12 finally does becomes relevant, Windoze OS X is just a worthless piece of crap malware OS with no discernible benefits to offer. I'm still running it on the M18xR2 as a test and that is what came pre-installed on the Sky X9 that I am reviewing... so, I use it every day on two machines and still haven't developed any level of appreciation for this piece of poop OS.
I know curiosity alone is a really big temptation and a guy should try it on something other than an Alienware to make their own decision, but don't expect much or you'll be really disappointed. I despised a lot of things about Windows 8/8.1, but I found at least a few features that I thought were kind of cool and wished Windows 7 had them. I haven't really identified anything about Windows 10 that seems special and there is nothing that I can honestly say that I appreciate about it. It's an over-hyped hybrid of Windows 7/8/8.1 with a reduced feature set, reduced performance, extra spyware and data harvesting features to offset the free upgrade price tag. We cannot truly say the identity theft and behavior tracking features are a trade-off for being free because if you actually buy it somewhere it still includes all of the same the malware as the free upgrade. -
For SC2 LotV too please. And some instructions on how to set them up would also be appreciated, thanks
-
Use nvinspector. Click "wrench" icon and import SLI profile.
So please
SC2 LotV SLI
Fallout 4 SLI
From 358.91 ? -
@Mr. Fox , is MSI Afterburner safe to use? I don't use it to overclock my GPUs, just use the OSD functionality (which to be honest is unrivalled, I so freaking love it). I use Nvidia inspector and HWinfo64 too. I had EVGA Precision X installed but deleted it a while back.
-
Probably so. I don't use it, so I cannot say for sure. I am guessing, but I suspect the EVGA Pixel Overclocking Utility might be causing problems, and MSI Afterburner does not have that.
-
OMG, i just ordered my new laptop (clevo p650re6 with gtx 970m) and wanted to buy w10 but you guys are really scaring me.... Better i keep windows 7 ? Or my clevo model is unaffected? (It s my first laptop so i m a total noob at it.... Even dunno where to get drivers
)
-
Just scouring all the forums I could on the web about this it seems there are way more people running win 10 on these laptops with no issue versus those that have this problem. Maybe it's just the niche crowd that overclocks them and have had at one point or currently do have Precision X installed that are bricking the laptops.

on windows 10 ? -
nah, on 8.1....haven't had the time or intent to try 10.hmscott likes this.

Has anyone tried this method?
Remove NVIDIA card
Upgrade to Windows 10 for activation purpose
Wipe drive and do a fresh install of Windows 10
Re-fit graphics card
I suggest removing the card because like Mr Fox has said in earlier posts the error follows the affect card around like a bad smell.
