Yes, that has been tested. That doesn't prevent it. On the Alienware 18 I clean installed Windoze OS X (10) running on Intel HD Graphics. The LCD did not get the EDID corrupted until I changed it to NVIDIA and installed the GeForce drivers. (When the M18xR1/R2/18 are set for Intel Graphics the discrete GPU is "uninstalled" for all intents and purposes... no power to the PCIe slot and not detected by the BIOS or Windows.)

Didn't Micro$haft say windows XP could not support DX11? And yet a update come out for just that purpose - IMO a DX 12 update will be released for win 7/8
I've had a M17xR4 GTX680M running win 10 pro for almost 2 months with no screen issues, it has a 120Hz panel
Also had a AW17 with GTX770 and another with GTX780 and win 10 pro for 2 months with no issues, they both have 120Hz panels. Also have 2 AW17's with AMD R9 M290x's and they have had win 10 pro installed for 3 months, they have standard LCD screens. Also got 2 x AW13 R2 with win 10 - no issues.
But I DID have a AW 17 with GTX880M with win 10 that gave 8 beeps, it had a 120Hz screen, but I am leaning towards that being bad luck rather than windows 10 as I have half a dozen Alienware 17's with win 10, 120Hz panels and no issues
Not game to try a 18......
I got 3 new ones for AW18Last edited: Nov 12, 2015hmscott likes this. -

Windows 10 November Refresh iso's have been released.

Maybe someone who is able to fix a bad edid, can try a clean install and inform us if corruption still occurs or not with the latest version of windows 10.jaybee83 likes this. -

I called Dell AU today.
OMG - What an ordeal, their customer service is getting really bad.
So after being hung up on, argued with and no one on the other end (11 calls)
I finally got through to someone with a brain
They checked the availability of the AW18 cross fire cable in AU.
Bad new is they have none in stock
Good news is it is still listed as available for sale, so now the spare parts team will contact the vendor and get spares from them, I've been down this road before with Dell, it usually takes 8-12 weeks for a vendor order.
But I should get confirmation in the next 7 days, if the confirmation is positive I'll sell you guys a cable each
No price as yet, that will be set by the spare parts team when the order is confirm.
Actually now I think of it, I'm pretty sure when I done this before it was also for a cross fire cable, but for M17xR2 so a while ago now -
Good/Bad news
Let's hope they can source the cables for us
Really?.. the CF cables for M17x R2 are pretty common, i have a bunch of them xD -
Thank you for your effort! The M18x R2 CF cable Dell stocks in the USA and it is $9 USD. I don't understand why they have no Alienware 18 cables when they still have M18x R2 cables.
-
andrewsi2012 Notebook Consultant
They are now, but not so common in 2010
-

All good - I had to contact them anyway for some other spares -
Glad i read this thread, havnt seen all the pages yet. however i am a windows 10 user and have a alienware m17x r4. I was pondering the thought of upgrading my gpu but im not sure anymore.. kinda bummed out at the moment.
-
Probably because they sold tons of M18xR1/R2 with AMD GPUs and hardly any Alienware 18 with AMD GPUs... I'm guessing, but most likely no supply due to no demand. I only know of two Alienware 18 owners in our community that ordered an 18 with CrossFire and one of them upgraded to SLI.
-
Maybe he still got the cable? Got his username?
-
If I am remembering correctly, I think it was @Doctor JO that used to have an Alienware 18 with AMD and now has NVIDIA. I think he had an M18xR2 at first then bought an 18 later. If not him, then I cannot remember for certain who it was. It has been too long ago now.
-
Well I asked him, and as luck would have it, he sold his R9 M290X stuff a year ago.Mr. Fox likes this.
-
Darn. So, I remembered correctly... so, that's good. Wish he still had the parts you need.
-
It sucks. My M18x R2 is still in pieces waiting for a stupid cable that is next to impossible to find. Who would have thought? I may just sell them if possible and pick up a set of 780Ms, but I really don't want to have to do that.Mr. Fox likes this.
-
Wait, maybe I misunderstood what you were looking for. Do you need an M18xR2 CrossFire bridge, or an Alienware 18 bridge cable? I have a M18xR2 CrossFried bridge cable, but I thought you needed one for the 18. Or, if not that cable, what cable to you need for the M18xR2?
-
I need the Alienware 18 crossfire cable. The old M18x cable does not fit the connectors on the Dell R9 M290x, they are smaller than the old connector on the Dell 7970M or the Clevo 8970M. That was a hurdle I was not expecting at all, let alone finding a cable that NOBODY seems to stock, Dell or any other 3rd party.
-
OK, that's what I thought. When you said in previous post that you need a cable for the M18xR2 I thought I would ask.
Is that a typo, or is there a different cable you need for the M18xR2 as well? Depending on what cable it is, may have one or two spares for the M18xR2. I have no spare parts for Alienware 18. -
No cable needed for the M18x R2 anymore since I sold the 7970M CF I had in it. I had planned to recycle my old cable but it doesn't fit! Really miffed at this whole situation. I don't know why dell changed the connector when clevo left it exactly the same as it was on the 7970M.
-
Does M290X come with crossfire conector?
-
Dell has two versions. The M290X that came in the Alienware 17 does not have a CF connector, the M290X in the Alienware 18 DOES have a CF connector.
I thought I was gonna come out ahead, since I sold my 7970M for 230 a piece and bought the R9 M290X for 230 a piece brand new, but I guess not
-
IMO, this cross connectors is BS in general. Why nowadays desktop GPUs don't need it anymore while notebooks do???

It's only Hawaii and above

As the and cards for laptops are rebrands of rebrands you still need to use cf cable.

Maybe in the USA - But for the last 12 months before Dell stopped selling the AW18's the AMD X-Fire version was the only one sold on the AU website, it's the GTX780/880's that are rare over here -
Best Buy Canada still offers M290x XF
-
$2700 CAD...or a up to 13% more depending on the provincial tax. it would be about $3170 CAD after the ontario tax.Zero989 likes this.

It has been on sale numerous times. $100 off.

Maybe Dell Canada stocks the part then? Any Canadian can try for me? Part number 0YCK7N

None of those, even though that's what showed up on the service tag original config. it is actually 0T6VXY
-
Tried all of those when calling Pro Support. Including 0T6VXY. Nothing came up. Searching for Neptune brought up nothing. This was a 70 minute call.
Wanna know what's funny? He could find the XFire cable PN for the M18x R1 6970M.
I don't know how it's possible, but it's non-existent unless the machine is being serviced.CaerCadarn likes this. -
My brand new AW18 is now edid corrupted. Using windows 7 pro x64 as well. I just applied CLU as well not 2 days ago. God dammit.
I was using an external monitor, and I dumped 2 RAM sticks to lower the system power consumption to stop throttling in 3DM11 (this worked) and I had the best performance ever, but the score sucked because the CPU never behaves with SLI in 3DM11 (AW18 issue). I wanted to reboot since my bench crashed due to too little voltage, then BOOM 8 BEEPS.Last edited: Nov 14, 2015 -
I had a similar case. He was able to find CF cables for the M18x R2, but not the alienware 18. Go figure. Sorry about your 8 beeps mate

Try removing the battery for a while and letting it drain off... it has happened to me on my M18x R2 with dual 680M running Win 7 x64 SP1 as well, it's not really edid corruption, but it stopped booting (8 beeps) after i swapped from intel 4000 to Nvidia. Draining the battery did the trick and a couple of tries later the laptop started
-
That's because you probably had nonturbo flex support enabled in the BIOS. Mine used to do that with the option enabled with my Intel HD 4000 and 7970M CF when I switched GFX.

It's gone man.

Anyone brave enough to try W10 fall new build and maybe try to force the EDID corruption through using EVGA PrecisionX to check if they fixed this mess

I am now on the new build and Been running 353.50 since Win10 came out no problem here BUT I am scared !!!

reinstalled my system to get rid of some bugs i had on rtm build 240. so now on fall update build 586 and everything runs absolutely flawless. very happy indeed
also went for the latest nvidia drivers 358.91, so far so good after tons of reboots due to installs. no precision x though, just good ol inspector

Exactly what I am saying my man I hope this nightmare over soon but i sense it will not

i don't have any OC programs installed now because of this issue and i am on win 8.1.

With this trouble it's hit or miss. If your laptop decided to have allergy on Win10 without EVGA then it always will.
And if didn't then you are safe... without EVGA... as much as you can be safe with spy in your house.
