IE11 is very fast and good browser nowadays. Don't listen to stereotypes.

Thanks for summing it up for me, yes it's hard not to give up in such a long thread, but what you said is good news after all, yet I'm still a bit hesitant to make the jump since my laptop is out of warranty, and I'm not as lucky as you to have Mr. Fox in or near my country to help out if things went south haha. I don't plan to do any overclocking at the time being, so PrecisionX won't be important to me at this point

I don't have many reasons or urge to upgrade to Windows 10, I'm actually considering downgrading to Windows 7, just can't stand Windows 8 awkwardness, so to me it's whether I downgrade to Windows 7 or Upgrade to Windows 10. But my worry comes also from the possibility that NVIDIA drivers might be the cause of this issue not just Windows 10, and if that happen to be the case the issue may occur on any other version of Windows hence why I'm still sticking to the driver that came preinstalled on the laptop.

    Thanks again, appreciated.

No problem. That being said though, I did have my EDID get corrupted on Windows 7 too. I was using older drivers on a fresh install when it happened the second time.
Don't use precision X period. Very important. It may not be the cause, but it is certainly a catalyst.

Hi, my stock LCD on my Alienware 17R1 just died (8 beeps), most likely due to the EVGA Precision X.

I decided to go for the 120Hz screen upgrade, is there anything I should do before installing the new screen to avoid it ruining too?

I'm currently running W10 at the moment.

    Thanks.

I would completely reformat you hard drive and avoid Precision X like the plague. If you boot in without a fresh install, Precision X still has a chance to corrupt your EDID.
I've heard that the 120hz screens don't have the problem but why risk your new screen?

That's a nice visual example that fits what I think about Windows 10, LOL. Actually, almost think the same about Windows 8.1 as well. Both suck.

I was wondering if anyone has heard anything new, it seems the issue is with EVGA Precision X? I use MSI Afterburner for overclocking my 770M. And to watch my gpu temps in the notification area. I'm still on Windows 7. I don't wish to ruin my laptop, but the few weeks I had Windows 10 installed I really liked it. But I started having a few issues (self done) then saw the issue here and just said screw it I'm not risking it and went back with Windows 7.

So any risk if I upgraded back to 10?

After following this threat closely for a while I recently jumped on windows 10 from 8.1 (clean install) using the latest geforce 359 driver, fingers crossed so far everything is running smoothly! Obviously though I'm staying away from PX and Afterburner. Just use HWiNFO64 + RTSS for monitoring gpus

Oh man! I have Precision X installed on my rig but never used it since I upgraded from 8.1 to 10 (actual Build 10240 and 358.91)! Sitting on a time bomb, eh? :eek2:

Should I just open it and find out? Or simply get rid of it? :D

I doubt it will work. USB drivers works in VM because VM USB drivers passess them to real USB outside of VM. Things like GPU access are much more limited. Even 3D acceleration is limited atm.

Weak ... I dunno why for some reason my PC stopped booting Linux even with the UEFI image ... after the "try linux without install" part I just get black screen

I am feeling completely unsafe with no safety plan in case $hit happens and the screen EDID gets corrupted again

Did something happen to your Dark Knight's screen also? Wondering if I should install Precision X on this Sky X9 and see if it gets ruined. I've never removed it from the Panther and nothing bad has happened so far.

Only the M18xR2 and Alienware 18 were affected by the cancer OS. Panther has never been affected. It no longer has Windoze OS X on it because I don't like the OS, but it did for a couple of months until I got sick of it. Sky X9 shipped with it and I've added Windows 7 to make it more awesome than it is capable of being shackled by Windoze OS X limitations. M18xR1 has never been affected, but I don't allow any Automatic Windows Updates to install on any of my systems for any reason whatsoever. The M18xR1 has never been touched by Windoze OS X cancer OS.

You need to get out more, bro. I'm ready to trade 3 drop-dead gorgeous Alienware systems for just one of these amazing machines. (Not an option, but I would do it if I could.)

Eurocom Sky X9 Review by Mr. Fox | PremaMod.com
(still need to wrap it up with a summary, but you've got 5 pages of stuff including extreme overclocked and stock benchmarks, plus videos, to look at)

Introducing the Desktop Laptop: EUROCOM Sky X9

And, lots of contributions in this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...70dm-owners-lounge-phoenix-has-arisen.781814/

The Eurocom Sky X9 is why you don't see me much any more. Working 18 to 20 hours a day (sometimes not even going to bed between jobs - done that a few times already) with my normal career, testing Sky X9 firmware mods with @Prema and trying to do some moderating here and there at NBR.

nope, havent had any screen issues thus far. was on win10 build 240 before with 353.62 drivers, now on aforementioned config, both ran well (aside from some initial win10 bugs, but nothing related to this). first setup ran fine for close to four months.

WRONG - I had a AW17 with a 120Hz panel and GTX880M running Windoze 10, it gave 8 beeps after less than 24 hours - NO PRECISION X INSTALLED AND NEVER HAD BEEN. But it was the initial (First) build of Windoze 10
I've had Windoze 10 running on about 7-8 different Alienware laptops for around 6 weeks now with no issues (Late Oct Build)

"Simply" removing it may not be enough, I advise a clean install with a complete HDD overwrite before re-installation (To be sure, to be sure)
Do the maths, 3-4 hours of re-installation Vs god knows how many repairing and then reinstalling.

nope don't think so either, i actually don't know what happened back then with my old P771ZM to getting the screen EDID busted like the AWs so i still think it was upgrade from 8.1 to 10 cause it. I don't use PrecisionX and AB on my Notebooks and never had, cause the voltage control only works in nV Inspector afaik. After i repaired my EDID with your and @t456 Linux guide i never had the issue again and the current owner of the P771ZM still has a working screen

Can anyone test whether the EDID is write protected in the latest 10 build? Looking around it seems it hasn't happened to the people running it.

I don't have a new Alienware 18 so I don't have the hardware to test. Easy way to test is Win 10 + latest nvidia drivers + eVGA precision x. You're under warranty, best case scenario you brick and they give you even better specs.

There's no compelling reason to use Windows 10. It's a pile of garbage OS and DX12 is not (at least not yet) relevant. And, it's not a safe option for anyone even without any possibility of EDID corruption. It's a surveillance and adware OS with nothing of value and only selfish ambitions for Micro$loth and NSA at its core.

Should be able to. I have SEVERE throttling with 780M SLI with those drivers, but they probably won't hurt anything other than performance.

I have had this happen when the game settings for screen refresh / vsync rate is different than the one I have set in Windows at the time.

This has also happened for the same reason when changing OC profiles in GPU tuning apps.

Any time you see the screen blank it is resyncing to a new setting. If this is happening going into/out of a program check the program settings, Nvidia 3d global and specific Nvidia 3d game settings.

It can also happen with alt-tab and going in and out of sleep mode rapidly.

It can also happen when switching between internal / external screens with different screen refresh / sync settings.
