    ...which u can throw out of your house by using o&o shutup10 to deactivate all unwanted spy functions :)

    was on build 240 with 353.62 driver before for 3.5 months (and countless reboots, naturally). never had precision x installed and didnt have any troubles so i figured i might as well go ahead with the clean install of build 586 and update to the latest nvidia drivers while im at it. so far so good, ill keep u guys updated!

    Microsoft uses most data to display personalized information to you that is aimed at making your computer life easier. As an example, Windows 10 can remind you to set off to the airport 30 minutes earlier due to traffic en route. In order to deliver this information to you, however, Windows 10 has to access your calendar entries, your mails (i.e. the airline confirmation email), your location and it has to have access to the internet to get traffic news.

    And if that don't scare the crap outta ya - Nothin' will.

    well, ive got cortana completely disabled and never use any of those crappy "live apps" or however theyre called nowadays, so theres really no info to extract there ;)

    Exactly. I was going to counterattack you that ShutUp10 doesn't actually close all spy holes because Cortana is the biggest spy in there but looks like you already know this.
    Although I would highly suggest to use opensource DWS (Destroy Win10 Spying).

    theyre still developing shutup10 and stuff more and more "holes" with each version (cortana disable already included). also tested general functionality with specific functions and they indeed arent active / do not work anymore. so im feeling comfy thus far :)

    So true. To take that one step further, there is no cure for Windows 10. You need to catch it early, before it metastasizes and remove it completely just like a tumor. The notion that it is a good product is much like thinking being "slightly less evil" is almost as good as being "not evil" LOL. Death is inevitable for those that choose to continue on the broad pathway that leads to darkness and destruction.

    I like old fashioned BIOS. That way no OS can attempted to make changes or take control, f%^k UEFI and the man.

    It's M18xR1/R2 bios issue. After BIOS update on AW18 it works with win7.

    I never allow Windows Updates to infect my systems. There has to be a compelling reason to consider taking a risk on allowing them. What does the November update have in it that causes you to wonder about this?

    Oh, I see. Interesting. I think I will wait to see if all of my Windoze OS X malware castration and aesthetic repair tweaks still work before I roll the dice on another piece of trash from Redmond. I've got Windows Updates totally crippled and non-functional on purpose, plus I have Aeroglass finally working without a tacky watermark and command windows on my desktop. I don't want to do anything to upset the apple cart with those very important enhancements. I think they are more important than any OS updates they may have sloshed out of their digital slop bucket.

    Not unless you are willing to suffer the consequences. It hasn't happened to me again, but every day I am on pins and needles wondering what might happen. I want to use Precision X because I like it a lot. But, what the hey... NVIDIA has basically ruined my Alienware M18xR1, M18xR2 and Alienware 18 with ridiculous throttling caused by their retarded drivers so there's not much to lose any way. I don't even bother trying to bench them any more. I have lost all interest in them due to NVIDIA crappy drivers, and since using 980M in them is a waste of time, I've resigned myself to the fact that they are utterly useless for the reasons I once loved them to pieces. Still beautiful, still nice, extremely well built... and neutered by trash drivers.

    I also wonder if they plan to do the same thing to 980M and GTX 980 notebook GPUs when they have something new and shiny they want us to buy.

    That's the problem with these companies. Their lack of support. If they release a machine they should support it for a certain amount of time. I'm not saying 10 years but atleast 3. And if they don't they should atleast disable the secure flash features so we can unlock bios. These machines are deemed end of life anyway so what difference does it make to them.

    Ah i just start reading it.. maybe i was lucky for a time but i will stop using it. Im with x8 p377sma, ws10 pro x64 with last update and nvidia too, i always used precisionX while gaming. I have the original basic 1080p display oc to 100Hz but i still didnt have any problem with my screen hopefully.

    In this case it is not a lack of support as such. Dell and Nvidia have made the M18xR2 and 980m END OF LIFE, effective with Windows 8.1 and driver version 350.00 or so.

    My Alienware 18 did it on a clean install without Precision X. The M18xR2 took longer every time and Precision X was reinstalled along with everything else before the EDID got corrupted each time.

    With the replacement screen on the 18 running Windows 8.1 and no Windows Updates (disabled completely) it has not resurfaced on the 18; nor has it resurfaced on the M18xR2 with Windows 10. Precision X is not installed on either machine.

    I just tried to order an extra 120hz screen for my 17r1, unfortunately they are all sold out on laptopscreen.com. Just like they are sold out of the 18 screens. So at this rate unless they fix this screen issue there is going to be a shortage of screens

    @aeliaran - Hey Bro... got your LCD from UPS this afternoon and it was definitely corrupted. I am flashing it now and will do a few reboots just to confirm it is working correctly.

    Will have it on its way back to you tomorrow.

    Before flashing, the corrupted EDID matches everyone else with the problem. Notice the row starting with 10: and the fifth pair of numbers (between 04 and 29) is 00.

    @Mr. Fox , As you trained your hand with this I want to ask how is your plan with first 18 with unlocked BIOS? Still waiting for programmer?
    What do you want to success with it particularry?
    BTW there is a tester clip kit for 4$ which MIGHT save you from desoldering. Also bought one And waiting for programmer now.

    So right now I am stuck at driver 347.88 & don't want to update in fear of losing another screen ... Can anyone tell me if it is safe to try new drivers with W8.1 or is it still dangerous ?

    I've got everything I need (EEPROM and motherboard socket, and a new programmer) except for the unlocked BIOS firmware. I've been too busy with the Sky X9. I have already used the new programmer on the Sky X9. In-line flashing is typically not possible on system BIOS due to resistors on the motherboard. I have the right clip to do it, but it hasn't worked for me.

    Sorry for trouble. Thanks for profile, is it from 359?

    I know it can be annoying to upload SLI profiles for me but I just don't want to get my display killed as I don't have any money to buy a replacement.

    I think this is like winning bingo. This seems to be a rare problem among the thousands of people that have AW 18 laptops or others. As long as you aren't messing with Precision X then you should be fine.

    hmmm, I'm not him but if you have free minute and curious a little here is a nice program for smart darkening colors for night mode reading called Dimmer. It's really great except it has a bug. If you don't close it and try to shutdown windows it will show network error for 5-10 seconds.
    Also it doesn't auto create config xml file at first launch if you don't unzip one but this is minor issue. If you could reverse engineer it and fix it... :rolleyes:

    Thanks again for the assist, Mr. Fox. Just to further add what limited information I can, I can confirm I did have PrecisionX installed, I really never used it for anything (had installed it through Steam to try to control the fan speed on my 2009 pre-Dell m17x-R1 which didn't work, never uninstalled). The day my display died, though, I had gotten it in my head to try to adjust the fan speed on the m18x R2 and I did, for the first time to my recollection, open PrecisionX as part of that process. Screen died on the next reboot. Take it for what it's worth.

    Has anyone who had used BIOS switched to UEFI and can confirm this allows boot from external display even with a bricked display? I'm not fond of the idea of UEFI, but I'm even less fond of the idea of running a primary laptop that might just not turn on everytime I reboot no matter how careful I am. Totally fine reflashing through Linux if I can just boot the damned thing - that becomes an (admittedly large) aggravation rather than a fatal flaw.

    Is it OK now to install Windows 10 latest build and the latest NVIDIA drivers on an M18x R2 680M SLI safely or still not?

    I've been following from day one. Seriously a huge chunk of info plus people asking other questions and getting off topic. Totally understand you giving up lol.
    So we never really figured out what was causing the EDID corruption. Progress stopped after a few key people got busy. Basically, as long as you don't use Precision X, you should be fine. There are 2-3 people who had corruption occur without it but we haven't really nailed down any other "triggers".
    I've had my screen repaired by @Mr. Fox for a very reasonable fee. I've been running Windows 10 for like a month now fully updated. I've got the latest Nvidia drivers as well. I'm using Nvidia inspector as my overclock program when I need it. I've had zero issues so far other than me running my overclock too high and hitting the thermal shut off a couple times :p
