Ive seen quite a few people asking about this so i figured it deserves its own thread .

Your M17x should have come with a Windows 7 coupon but many did not including mine .

Call Dell Customer Care and explain the situation and they will know right away and send you one out . As of today August 6th there is a 10 day wait for the coupon.

If you ordered your machine before June26th you will not get Windows 7 . Does not matter that you did not receive your machine nor pay for it before that date according to Dell.

I believe the Dell Win7 website doesn't work with the M17x. When you're at the laptop selection there is no AW option.

Go to AW's website and it has instructions (they redirect you to M$ and you must have your coupon to register).

Go ahead and look for yourself at the Dell Win7 page. There isn't an option for AW or M17x.

So, with that, I would say put the AW Win7 page. lol

Sleey's post takes you to the Alienware site that give you all the details about the upgrade process and in the end links you to the same site I gave you, so I guess both our posts will end you up in the same place. The Dell site, however, said they would charge tax and S&H.

Looks good  . I'm just hoping Dell will for sure release Windows 7 drivers for the M17x. It kinda makes me nervous that they don't list it under their eligible computers!

The biggest concern with Windows 7 and the M17X is getting the custom software to work properly. I imagine it won't take too long just to get the base drivers working. They're still working hard to make the custom software even more stable on Vista.

    Thanks,
    Gabe

    Your joking, right?

Dell is going to be THRILLED if Win7 is as good as everyone suggests. Believe me when I say that a lot of tech support calls are due to OS/software related issues.

If they can offer a better OS in Win7 Dell will be all over it. Vista is just now becoming a decent OS (which took a couple of years lol)

don't know if it's diffrerent in U.S but in Europe you'll probably have a bit of a fight on your hands to get the free upgrade if you made your order before 26th, even though some people are saying you should get it because your order wasn't delivered until after that or w/e. This was confirmed in an email from Dell customer services although some will say different.

I can vouch for that call there sleey0 - Windows Awesome is miles ahead of Vista...

here's some of the, for the geeks that is, important aspects:

    - smaller footprint than Vista, even with Windows Awesome Ultimate
    - WPF is now native
    - better performing drivers due to an overhaul of the Windows Driver Program majiggies
    - far more control over what is running

Anyways, i've been running Windows Awesome since it was in private previews and even then it was more stable than Vista..

I'm on the phone trying to get Window's 7 and the guy keeps telling me "but the date that matters is the date you placed your order, which was before June 26th! I keep telling him that I didn't receive my machine until the 10th and wasn't charged until the 7th of July, and he then says that the M17x isn't eligible for the upgrade. /facepalm

That is such a bunch of horse crap honestly . It should be from the date of purchase IE when you paid not when ordered . Tell him your going to return the bloody thing then since your not satisfied at all with the machine and maybe he will cave somehow.

Those OEM license's for Windows7 cost dell like 10 bucks each i think so there is no reason at all they cant throw you a bone.

After being on hold for quite a few minutes and explaining the definition of the word purchase to the guy, and explaining that order =/= purchase, he finally agreed to send it! Wow that was way more trouble than it needed to be.

Windows 7 is Windows 7, Windows Awesome is a faster version of Windows XP

I have to say they are really handling this poorly for people who clearly did not "Receive" there machine before June 26th .

The day they charge your card is the day it should have gone into effect and not the time of order . You didnt actually make a purchase until you have paid for the item.

Its like i went window shopping on June 25th for computers but did not make my purchase till July 12th there for im not entitled to it? .

Makes 0 sense to me and i would i fight it till i got what i wanted just like airplaneman did .

I have payed by Wire Transfert prior receiving the computer and before the 26th I have a mail of a rep saying I would get the upgrade for free. And the customer support just blew me away. Saying it is reserved for orders after the 26th of June. I got the computer the 16th of July.

    Dell...I hate you so much

Call them and be like "sir, the website CLEARLY states that computers PURCHASED on or after June 26th are eligible, my credit card/wire transfer/whatever did not go through/get charged until (enter date after June 26th) and therefore I didn't purchase the computer until then. I have bank statements to prove this, and email from a sales rep saying I get the upgrade, let me talk to your supervisor.

Lindir your case will be the exception i guess since you actually paid in full prior to receiving the actual machine.

But even then you didnt take delivery of your your machine till after the 26th so while you paid for it you were not actually the owner yet. .

I would still call and complain even if it takes you a few trys to get your point across to someone who understands where your coming from.

Thanks for your help. I have a friend working at Microsoft he told me he can get me a discounted Seven.
But damned these people at Dell have no clue what is Customer Support and Customer care in general.
I'm going to order the spare part for the 2nd hard drive and I hope I'll never have to order at Dell again ever.
I wish they send me a survey about my satisfaction... I wish

Got a mail today after I asked the support to send me the coupon or I return the laptop because i'm still in legal delays to do it and order a new one with Windows seven.
They told me that it isn't Dell policy to offer compensation and I can procede with the return...

It doesn't make any sense. it would cost them more money and effort to do this.
There is absolutly not customer service in this company.

That's too bad. However, my experience so far has been totally different. I've been getting some nice bonuses from Dell.

I can say that I have never had such an awesome customer service. And yeah, they provide compensation when they mess up or make you very uncomfortable. Maybe you are just reaching the sales people that can't be bullied :D

Just wondering should I use te respawn option to get back to "factory defaults" before returning it?
