There is absolutely no chance you will get a M15x for $2200 with a 8800M GTX. I predict a 2.2GHz processor, 2gb of ram, 200gb HDD, and 8800M GTX will run you within $100 of $3000. That is almost $500 more than my config, which means you pay $500 for the Alienware name, the 15.4" form factor, and the smartbay. That's fair.
Shave off $400 to downgrade to a 8700, and another $400 saved by going with a 100gb HDD, 1.66GHz processor, and 1gb of ram instead of 2. That saves you $800 and looks a lot like what bare bones Alienwares look like and sell for... around $2200.
-
That might be somewhat accurate but proc upgrades will be cheaper and honestly what kinda of sensible person wouldnt buy their own ram/hdds? Those three will definitely take the price down.
-
First time buying my own laptop so I was just going to get the ram and hdd from Alienware. Getting an external drive to game from though, so I was going to skimp on the internal drive.
-
. I suppose we'll have to wait till friday.
-
how easy it to install RAM on a laptop? In this case, would installing new RAM void the warranty on the m15x?
And could you (hypothetically) buy the lowest configuration for the m15x and upgrade it to the maximum RAM yourself?
Basically, if you purchase the m15x with 1GB RAM, will it still have as many DIMM slots as a more expensive m15x?
If it doesn't void your warranty and you can upgrade the RAM yourself, why would anyone spend an extra $1,000 on RAM when it's a lot cheaper to do it yourself? -
no one spends $1000 on ram I don't think. The upgrade from 1 - 2 GB I think is like $110 - $170 or something.
-
1) Unbelievably easy... Take off backplate. Unpackage ram. Ground yourself. Pop in ram. Replace cover.
2) Yes without a doubt. In fact I will be getting mine with 1 gig of ram and getting the rest from crucial.
3) of course. They have one set motherboard for the M15X theyre not gonna change it from order to order.
4) theyre too dumb to do it themselves ( you need to be pretty freakin stupid ), dont care about the money, dont know that you can do it yourself, or they dont trust themselves. -
oh okay that makes me feel better! I'm definitely upgrading the RAM myself then.
and thanks for the correction Stone825 - I messed up on the $1,000. I think I was thinking about the 64GB solid state drive, which costs an extra 1100 from a 250GB 7200 rpm hard drive on the m9750 I think...
But it is obnoxious on, Sony, for example, that the jump from 1GB to 2GB RAM is about $100, and the jump from 2GB to 4GB is $550!
total rip-off. -
and another thing: do we know if it will windows XP will be an option?
does alienware give the option of hard drive partitions to install more than one operating system?
I'm asking because of compatibility issues...I'm still not sure how well software like Adobe Production Studio (Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0, After Effects 7.0, Audition 2.0, etc.) will work...
Basically I'm confused as to what operating system(s) I would stick with. -
Me want 64bit vista/xp pro sp3/leopard haha. but unfortunately...Theyre probably not gonna offer 64 bit vista or leopard unless we have a miracle.
-
IF they do come out friday, by the time it gets out, it'll be sometime next week.
not sure though -
-
Just as an addition to this info, we asked Alienware about when the M15x would be available to "everyone" (those not signed up for the newsletter) and got the following response:
"Alienware will be releasing a select few units to members of their e-mail subscription base, although the Area-51 m15x will not be available publicly at that time. A public release date is still being determined." -
NOOO
Why??
-
MICHAELSD01 Apple/Alienware Master
Just sign up for the Alienware newsletter here:
http://www.alienware.com/intro_pages/m17x_m15x.aspx -
but i doubt itll be available for order this friday. maybe, maybe not. -
Rather then mass release it at once , send a few off and see whats happens in the public domain . Obviously they have been testing it for months but in lab conditions. If everything goes fine then cool but if something goes wrong in mass production then they could have thousands of complaints so see what happens with a limited release.
-
Meh, I wont have the money anyway, I just wanted to access the config page to see how much money I need. lol.
-
When they said releasing Friday I didn't think they meant limited quantities...
-
Well, now that everyone knows and probably signed up for the newsletter I wonder how they are going to sell them if they do only sell them to newsletter subscribers. Meh...
-
patience everyone. Maybe they are only gonna be pre config systems anyway. Wait a little bit, prices will change, choices will grow. Thats what happened with the 9750 in weeks of release.
-
I hope the factory blows up so none of you get any 0_0. Hehe jk.
They may do the same thing that the M1730 did though, and only release 1 config, and then release more configs. -
If the factory blows up I'm hunting you down...
-
UGH! WHY CAN'T IT JUST BE FRIDAY ALREADY SO WE KNOW WHAT ALIENWARE IS ACTUALLY PLANNING ON DOING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think this amount of tension is going to make me faint before they launch it.
Maybe we should send them emails begging that we be a part of their "limited subscribers" ahhhh!!!!!!
I wish they would release more concrete information instead of vague and ambiguous stuff! I need a connection in Alienware...seriously. -
It's all part of their strategy to build up the hype.
-
I'm worried that this hype is going to fall flat this friday if the alienware laptop doesnt come out...
Oh well, I guess we'll find out.
Hopefully all this information is just to give us something to talk about on these forums! haha -
If the laptop doesn't come out, I might just buy a desktop.
-
If the laptop doesnt come out im hunting stone down o\/0!!!

I think that the 15x will probably have most of its configuration options available when it is officially released. AW doesn't want to repeat the mistake they made with the m9750 and take pre-orders months in advance of the official release and were simply not geared up to supply all of the config options due to unexpectedly large pre-orders and back ordered parts. They want to make sure they have all of the parts on hand for the various configs before they take orders.
-
Hmm. I'm going to boarder up my windows just incase
-
lol ill get the koolaid man to bash em down xD
-
Stone825 and Laxislife1265, you two are too funny. Just a couple of hours until the hopefull release, so relax. Companies love taking their prospectives customers on the famous Hype Machine Ride (that's probably not funny, lol)!
-
The kool aid guy has nothing on me. Just put a bullet in him and he will drain out. Then my dog will lick it up, and you will go home crying because not only did I blow up the factory, but I also killed your only companion, the kool-aid man.
-
NOOOOOOOO WHY!?!??!??!?!
Ive never had an artificial beverage friend as good as him!!
-
Ok, was at the Alienware booth again... I performed a rough measurement using my hands and fingers - table to keyboard deck was around 1 1/8"; and just about 13" wide. I dont have a table to screen/lid measurement.
-
Im guessing its gonna be somewhere between 1.6-2 inches.
-
Arkarch, did you see their new ALX desktop? I can't find any info on it anywhere
-
something close to the 9750.
approx
until theres full specs i dont really know either. -
Dual Quad-core Intel Core 2 Extremes QX9775
3-way NV 8800 in SLI or Dual ATI HD 3870 in Crossfire
Liquid Cooled. 8 Gb FBDIMM, support up to 4 PCI Express x16 Gen 1.1.
Recommend starting a new thread for this. -
Thanks so much! That computer sounds great.. and expensive!
I'm really dissapointed in the CES coverage this year. It doesn't seem like too many tech sites are going into very much detail about the new products being shown off. Heck, you all have seen the lack of coverage regarding the m15x. I've seen maybe 3 short videos, but no big coverage on them at all. -
Back to topic though -
5 more hours...
-
5 hours to release on the alienware website? I am sending my 1530 back and I am thinking about getting this laptop because of the 8800 gtx card
-
Here you go guys!!
http://www.alienware.com/product_pages/notebook_m15x.aspx -
Whoooohoooo!
Edit: All you people who waited are lucky sob's. -
Hmm.. costs more than I thought. I already hit 4,500 before I moved to the second page. Damn... I'll have to pick less powerful components
-
MICHAELSD01 Apple/Alienware Master
It looks like the m15x starts at $1,499. Chances are current configurations offered have overpriced upgrades, and if you changed the HD and RAM yourself a great configuration should cost $2,200-$2,300, which is great pricing for the 15" model. I hope the 17" is only $200-$300 more, that'd be an amazing deal. BTW, only Ripley and Silver are available for customising the system atm.
-
godamnit... This means i have to wait even longer!!
-
MICHAELSD01 Apple/Alienware Master
Holy ****! I just asked a customer rep the dimenions of the m15x and it is:
Height: 1.30”
Width: 14.55”
Depth: 10.73”
Weight: 7 lbs
Official m15x dimensions!
Wow, that's much better than most people thought they'd be!
m15x Is Offically Coming Out Friday!
