you read that correctly. check alienware.com - the m15x is now available with the ATI HD3870 GPU with 512MB of VRAM. the upgrade price over the standard 8600M-GT is a mere +200$ (compared to +350$ for the 9800M-GT).
-
Is it a good card then vs. the 9800? I havnt the foggiest idea about ATI cards...
-
there equal but i think the 3870 wins by a little as drivers come out it will be alot better and for the 150 dollar price difference it would be ....i would have got the m15x now
.
they just blindsided us in the head -
and when was the last time ATI released a well-performing, non-buggy driver?
-
The 3870 is not equal to the 9800M GT on a 1v1 comparison in gaming benchmarks. We can run some if you want to find out.
That's a good theory on them trying to clear stock. -
yea but clearing stock for which reason ... to stop selling the m17 and clear out all of the stuff or clear out for the 4870's
-
Hmm well, I personally like the idea of them clearing out stock for the 4870s. I want prices!
-
a single 3870 would fit nicely between the 8700M GT and the 9800M GT.
-
i think they're clearing out stock too. if they simply wanted to offer the m15x with more GPU options, they could've made it available with the HD3870 months ago.
a boatload of HD4870s for eager m17 (& Whitebook, hrr hrr) owners? coming right up... -
any idea how the performance would be with a 3870?
-
Better than the 9700M GTS.
-
3870 is slightly behind the 9800M GTS.
-
Just release the driver buggy or not it takes them forever. Didn't they just release one and everyone was shocked it happened so fast?
-
Agreed
Cheers
Luke -
with the support for the 3870, when the 4870 comes out, they'll probably do that too.... 3 months later...
this is good news, means just about any MXM III card will work in the m15x. Thanks for that AW. -
i dont think the m15x will handle the heat of the 4870..... the 9800gt gets hott
-
I see the 9800 having a 225W TDP and the 4870 having a 160-225W TDP....
therefore having a similar TDP to the current standard.
how is that so much hotter? they could use the same coolers as for the 9800M GT's. -
well if thats the case the m17 is saposed to have heat issues with the 4870...it would be horribly sad if the m15x could handle it but the m17 couldnt ....
but you logic is solid and with that being said ....only time will tell
they need to put a bigger fan in here and fix it so we can be ready for the 4870's -
we will certainly see... either from AW directly or though people with voided warranties trying it out.
either way, I'd expect good results. -
imagine, that would be crazy. the m15x would be a killer machine with the HD4870. still, i also don't think it'll work out in terms of heat and power requirements.
on a side note, post #4000!!
-
congrats

I'll post single gpu benchmarks (synthnic and and real world) tonight. i have to make my money 1st.
-
that would be awesome
-
thanks dude

Yeah no problem just waiting for ram to come in thee mail. today or i'm going to run over everyone in the post office with a camry.
-
I could see a 4850 in the M15x, which is pretty much the equivalent of a 9800M GTX minus the TDP. It's just a matter of where to get it. If Flextronics ends up making both a 4850 and 4870 available for the M17, then that would be the answer. Else, someone could just give it a try if they have an MSi GT725 and a M15x in their possession.
-
i wonder why you can not purchase laptop gpu's like you can for desktops....
seems the thing to do since you can upgrade just about the same as a desktop nowadays....
ps....you da man whizzo @4k posts....YAY 4 U !!!!
(rep comin yur way as soon as it lets me....) -
well, that's what the MXM standard is for, theoretically. It's just hard to find (high-end, i don't need no 8600m-gt...) replacement cards.
-
Nah, you can find a 9600, 9800M GT, GTX, or GTS easily.
-
links please?
-
Just call Eurocom, XoticPC, RJTech, or others. They'll quote you some prices.
-
There is probably no guarantee that the gtx would work in the m15x right?
-
you mean the 9800gtx?
-
Yeah I was referring to the 9800m gtx you could get from the clevo resellers
-
it might work in it...but it wont 'stay' in it
i mean...the heat is going to be too much for the chassis to handle -
lol i wish we could see one in there so we could watch it burn
-
btw...anyone thinks the m15x is a sweet buy now?...but i do wonder whats the next iteration of it would be
-
i do configure it with a t9300 and 9800gt and the alienfx for i think 1750 and 1900 resolution
good buy fo sho lol -
a 4850 in there would be totally awesome
and a 4870 for burning purposes

-

...but what happened to your ocz?
-
Oh the M17 can handle a 4870's heat. A single 4870.
Dual 4870s? Maybe. -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate

Ok got all my drivers. now i;m installing my games. but i dont know how to disable crossfire? and what settings do you want it at. i have fallout 3 crysis farcry 2. and more.
-
can you disable one of the cards in the device manager? that might work...
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
Sounds deadly for my drivers but oh well.
-
It was always a sweet buy. If you take care of it.
Dual 4870's are rather questionable. I guess we'll see. -
I heard disableling AI also disables Crossfire?
Greetings
Julian
