Are they going to check?
I got the MBP for 1599+tax. They accepted the order...
-
-
wuts ADC discount?
-
i have no idea but i would think "yes".
-
Apple Developer Connection. Theres a 100$ student membership option that allows you to buy ONE Macbook Pro for 400$ off (net savings of 300, better than education discount). But you can access the members store without signing in.
I was just seeing how far I could get. I hit 'place order' and got an order number and estimate ship date. Havent received an email though, dont know if I should expect one until it actually ships. -
But remember with the education discount you also get a mail-in rebate for $200 off an iPod so they are pretty much even. You just might end up saving a bit of tax with the ADC discount.
-
this is true. but, i have an ipod and don't absolutely need a new one.
-
Sell it on eBay?
-
Did you order this online or in a store? I don't think you could have done it online without being asked to sign in as an ADC member.
-
They will cancel it. They accept the order and then go through and check to make sure that you are not only a member, but if you said you were a student, they will check to make sure you are actually a student. I wish you luck, but it wil likely be canceled.
-
o well. i guess ill just do dark5's idea.
i figured it was worth a shot. -
Yeah. Not only that, even if you buy an ADC Student membership you need to send them proof that you're a student (copy of your transcript or student id). They will cancel an order without it.
The deal is OK, but yeah, I think the education discount plus free iPod (which you should seemingly be able to sell on eBay brand new for a pretty good price) makes it a better deal than hassling with the ADC stuff. -
They will cancel it after 2 to 3 days.... I have a valid student ADC membership and they canceled my order after checking. With the student ADC you only get one hardware discount per LIFETIME, I used mine up last year on a Mac Pro.

You are almost right, I was a student and left school before I signed up for ADC. Once I paid the $99.00 membership and signed up Apple sent me my starter developer package and when Panther was released I got a free copy which is what Apple does when you are a developer. When I decided to make a purchase I bought my PowerBook 17" and got the ADC discount, Apple doesn't check to see if I am still a student however what they do is check to see how many "assets" you have before allowing the order to ship. Assets allow ADC purchases to go through by giving you discount privileges. You are allowed one item of each, iPod, Computer, LCD Screen, iMac and so forth per year. You must buy everything you want at once. If you buy as much as even one iPod the ADC asset disappears until next year.
Premier ADC members can buy anytime and as much as they want. -
That's weird; Apple doesn't normally include any software (seeds or final OS releases) with ADC Select packages......... if they did, they don't as a policy any more.
http://developer.apple.com/products/student.html
All you get with the student membership is OS X and Xcode tools, 1 lifetime hardware discount, and the ADC Monthly Mailing (not the software seeds).
Also, the ADC Student hardware discount on a computer is once per lifetime, not once per year:
ADC Select gets 1 discount per membership year.
ADC Premiere members still have some restrictions as well; for example, tjhey can't buy as much as they want; they have 10 hardware discounts to use per year:
http://developer.apple.com/products/premier.html -
Sorry, I did make a mistake, the hardware discount is one per lifetime but I did get a full retail copy of OSX Panther and Xcode Tools and throughout the year Apple would send me updates to Panther. I received 10.3.3 and 10.3.6 on CD. So I received 3 copies of Panther during my time as a student ADC member. I had only signed up as a student ADC member to receive the hardware discount. I wasn't aware they were going to send me retail copies of OSX. They didn't come inside the retail box, they shipped inside CD sleeves.
Zadillo I'm not sure what you are disagreeing about, you said Apple sends a copy of OSX and Xtools. I never said they offered anything different. -
hldan, I said "OS X and Xcode tools"; that is, tools for OS X and Xcode.
Apple may at one time have included software seeds and free OS's with ADC Student memberships, but they no longer do. At least not officially. Not to say they might not be nice and send copies of Leopard, but they have been very specific that they don't include any software seeds, etc. All you get now is the monthly mailings, which are just tools, sdk's, etc. not full software seeds.

I've just purchase ADC student membership. I haven't gotten any email confirmation, is it usual? Should I except to get any packages for this order?
After getting done ADC membership, I will order MBP 2.4 for $1999, will I have warranty on this machine? This is very important for me? Will I able to buy apple care for it as well??
Thanks! -
You should have gotten some e-mail confirmation. You're going to need to fax them proof that you're a student as well (copy of student id, copy of transcript).
Machines bought through the ADC Hardware Store have the same AppleCare coverage. You can later buy the extended AppleCare coverage for your machine at the discounted price through the regular education online store. -
if you use the student ADC discount, can you also get the $200 rebate on an ipod? if so, what do you have to do, to make that work?
-
No, the $200 discount on an iPod is only when you purchase a Mac using the regular student discount.
-
Thanks Zadillo! Accordding to ADC's sales term;
This part confused me actually.
Do you know which fax number should I send my documents? It has been more than 7-8 hours.
-
So which alternative is in the end cheaper, the ADC student or the Reg student?
-
It is clear that ADC is the best option.
-
well is not that clear.. for Reg student you have $200 + free iPod which is another $200 while for the ADC you have to buy membership... still confused
-
I'd say go for the ADC, if you already have an iPod. Even if you decide to sell it (eBay), your iPod will be priced below retail. You're pretty much at a loss. Remember that you have to pay for the iPod upfront until they give you a mail-in rebate.
-
The description above is about ADC Materials; that would be, things like the documentation and developer tools that are made available to you as an ADC member.
Stuff bought through the ADC Hardware Store is still Apple hardware and has the same Apple warranties, etc. The only real difference is being able to use the ADC Discount (in the case of an ADC Student membership, it's a once-per-lifetime discount).
Re: the fax number. It is outlined in step 1 here:
http://developer.apple.com/faq/students.html
You should have received an activation code in your e-mail after purchasing the ADC Student membership, so you may need to e-mail them to check on that. You can contact them through here:
http://developer.apple.com/contact/ -
This is how it balances out right now. I'll use the base model MBP as an example.
1) ADC Select Student Membership:
You pay $99 for ADC Student membership. You get a hardware discount that lets you buy the base model MBP for only $1599. This is a once in a lifetime discount.
Total Cost: $1699
2) Regular College Student:
You get the standard educational discount on a MBP, paying $1799 for it. You also get $199 off the price of an iPod, essentially allowing you to get an iPod for free. You pay $1999 in total, but get a $200 rebate back by mail.
Scenario 1: You want to keep the iPod, in which case you have paid a total of $1799 (after you get the rebate back) for a MBP plus an iPod. This works out pretty well if you actually want or need an iPod.
Scenario 2: You don't need the iPod (don't want it, already have one, whatever). In this scenario, you would most likely try and sell it on eBay, forums, whatever. You would probably not be able to sell the iPod for full price, since you'll have to at least open the packaging and cut out the UPC, and no-one in their right mind would pay full price for an opened iPod, even if it was otherwise brand new. But let's say that you can sell it for something close to it; let's just say $175.
In this scenario, you paid $1999 total. You got $200 back in mail-in rebate, bringing your total price down to $1799. You then take off another, say, $175, bringing your final price to $1624. The less you sell the iPod for, the closer this gets to the ADC price though. Say if you can only sell it for $150, you're up to $1649.
So, the best possible price with the ADC membership is $1699. I'd say realistically, the best possible price with selling the iPod is $1624.
The best overall deal is if you actually DO need/want a new iPod, as then you aren't eating anything in the price, in which case you get a MBP and an iPod for $1799.
-Zadillo -
Not sure you anyone has mentioned this but with the ADC student membership you can get the MBP 2.4 version for $2000 meaning a total savings of $400 after paying $100 for the student membership
seriously considering it -
This reminds me, since I work for the state Apple will give about $200 off on a MPB.
http://www.apple.com/r/store/government/state/epp.html
HECK; now I remember just walking into the Apple Store and letting them know I worked for the state (showed I.D. badge); they gave me the discount. Cool! I can forget about online ordering! -
Yeah, it's essentially a similar cost savings though when you factor in the iPod discount
$1999 + $99 = $2099 total cost using the ADC method.
$2299 - $199 iPod discount = ~ $2099 total cost if you can sell the iPod for close to full price.
Nothing wrong with the ADC deal though, if you don't want to deal with the hassle of reselling the iPod, etc. -
You also forget that there's a free printer if you use the student discount. The ADC discount is really best if one plans on purchasing the $2499 computer and adding options. The more expensive the total package, the better the ADC gets.
-
i played with the order a while but only saw the iPod available. are they giving a printer and an iPod for the same MBP you buy ?
-
The free printer deal is for any Mac as well (it's not a student discount, it's available to any Mac buyer). It's a standard $100 mail-in-rebate on a select group of printers and all-in-ones.
-
ok i got that all Macs can have this but where ? I only see the free iPod while configuring my order !
-
If you scroll down to the bottom of the Apple Store, it's in the highlights section:
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APP...e.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=946100DD&nclm=PrinterPromo
"Save up to $100 on a new Mac and printer."
This can also be found in the "Big Deals" section as a current promotion (this is in the "Special Deals" section in the menu at the left. -
Probably selling the nano wont net you the full 200 dollar retail value
plus from reading posts here and reading the student membership description...im gathering that apple will send you updates for OS X....possibly meaning theyll send you Leopard when it comes out...thats what im guessing and that alone would pay off the 100 for the membership...but my purchase doesn't hinge on this fact -
I know, that's why I said ~ $2099, depending on how close to full price you could sell the Nano for.
ADC Student memberships do not officially include any sort of software seeds, free OS's, etc. I've seen a few people claim to have gotten Panther at least as an ADC Student member, but it isn't officially part of the membership. The software seeds and OS releases are only part of the full $500 ADC Select membership.
It's possible Apple might send Leopard to ADC Student members, but if they do it would be more like an extra bonus. I haven't heard if anyone ever got Tiger this way. -
A nice bonus indeed
this is a rather silly question...but I'm too lazy to sign up for an apple account just to find out...for which states does apple charge tax...i live in MA... -
Any state where Apple has a physical Apple Store will definitely have sales tax (except for states like Delaware, of course), so that would include MA:
http://www.apple.com/retail/storelist/ -
Don't forget Oregon. They don't have sales tax either.
-
Buying through the education website, how do they verify that you are actually a student at the college you specified? Fax?
-
Did they cancel your order?
-
I cancelled it.
-
What's cheaper, the discounts schools giveout or the Apple discounts?
-
Generally the discounts are the same, but it depends on the school.
Some schools may also offer special deals for bundles (i.e. I think my school gives an additional 5% discount when you buy a Mac and AppleCare at the same time, on top of the normal educational savings) -
At my school the 128Mb MBP is 1,999 so I'll go with the Apple offer
-
Finally got my ADC membership activation email, I have to activate it first, how long does it takes to be activated after faxing the documents?
-
Anyway, I've activated and ordered my SR MBP 2.4Ghz for $1999
-
so you pay $100 for ADC and get $500 discount.. did I get it right here ?
moreover, with ADC you can have the free iPod and printer too ?
-
Actually I've paid $99
With ADC, you can only get the printer $100 MIR.
I just ordered a MBP with ADC discount..but Im not a member?
