OS X 10.5 "Leopard" Pre-Order

This was hinted at in the "Apple Store down' thread'

As expected, it's $129 for the normal version.
$116 for student discount.

It will delivery on october 26 (so it claims)

 

I'm not pre-ordering...as much as I plan to get Leopard soon, I'm not in the mood to be a guinea pig for any possible bugs .

 

While reading threads on leopard the last couple months, everyone was saying 70$ for students. 116 isn't much of a break

 

The Student Discount is a bit disappointing.

Wow, really disappointed with the student discount. Couple that with the state that I have been hearing Leopard is in, and Apple's recent trend of first versions, and I think I am going to have to pass for now. At $70 I would have probably gotten it, but at $116, I think I will have to wait. Many beta testers I have heard from said Leopard is not ready for prime time. I think this is rushed just like the first Intel MBP, iPhone, iPod Classic and Touch, and pretty much every other product Apple releases these days.

I love Apple's stuff, but I hope they break this cycle of selling beta products.

 

On another note here are some tidbits from Engadget:

* Users who bought Apple machines from October 1st on can participate in Apple's Up-To-Date Program, which provides free Leopard upgrades (for $10 shipping).
* Boot Camp's beta Assistant software expires at the end of 2007, meaning Tiger users that want to continue editing / creating Windows partitions on their Macs need to do so before January, or upgrade to Leopard. Post-January you'll still be able to boot to the partitions you've created, though.
* Users shouldn't expect expanded sync capabilities between Mail.app and the iPhone, although it looks like you'll be able to read iPhone notes on your desktop machine now.
* File system is, indeed, still HFS+; OS X now supports read-only ZFS, as we'd heard.
* Don't forget to peep the new features / changes list on Apple's site.
* Call us crazy, but with a 6:00PM Friday launch we think you should expect lines -- but not for Apple to sell out.


So there you have it. No Boot Camp for Tiger after the end of the year (although you can still boot to the partitions), and new Macs purchased after Oct 1 will get Leopard for a small shipping fee.

Awesome - this is to ensure that people don't ***** about it like they did about the iPhone price drop. And I like that I will get Leopard for $10. Heh. Of course, I will probably need to pay $116 (WTF? Tiger is $69) for my iMac so that I can run XP, but I will do that later.

If you buy a qualifying Mac between October 1, 2007 and December 29, 2007, and it does not include Mac OS X Leopard, you’re eligible to get Leopard after it’s released for just $9.95 plus tax.​

Now you just have to find out what a qualifying Mac means. Expert ... pls help!

 

Well, although the pre-order student discount is at $116, my school's store still says they're selling it for $69...so...who knows...

either my school's subsidizing part of the cost, or they got a better volume deal in general, or they're just wrong. oh well

Anyway, about what is a qualifying Mac, I would imagine they are referring to the time window and not any specific models, though I could be wrong.

Aw that sucks, I knew that leopard was going to be released soon when I got my mbp, but its too bad they only did october for free leopard.

Once I pick up my Powerbook/iBook I'm upgrading to leopard.

 

More like learning from Apple. Many people who have been using the beta are saying that Leopard is not ready for everyday use. And judging by nearly every product release Apple has made in the last year and a half, it will be in a beta state at launch.

 

At the very least, I bet Safari will be snappier...

hah I bought mine sept 30th (delivered 10 days later), doh! I guess I'll just have to cross my fingers and enter in my serial number and hope that it's covered. It should be since the order couldn't have gone in until the 1st anyway. Hurray for free software!

 

Crap. I bought my MBP from an Apple retail store on Sept. 28.

Oh well. I'll probably use my Christmas money to upgrade to Leopard, or maybe later. As long as I can continue to boot into Windows from Tiger, it's cool.

 

So I guess if you're a student and don't qualify for the Leopard Up-to-Date Program it will be cheaper to purchase an ADC Student Membership for US$99.00 to get Leopard. It's probably a better option anyways, considering the ADC Monthly Mailing feature.

 

That's actually an excellent idea.

My school is still offering me Leopard for $69, but I'm almost tempted to do that.

 

MacMall has it for $109, but I think that's after rebate and if you pre-order. It's not that great of a deal, IMHO.

 

I was about to say that. Some universities do offer 10.5 at $69; so don't forget to check that out first.

 

Thank goodness for that up-to-date program (the student discount is a bit disappointing). But lucky me I purchased my MBP on Oct. 2nd! Giggity, giggity. $10 Leopard for me, woop woop... (sorry if for rubbing it in, i just can't help but be excited). I wonder if I can just pick up my free copy at my local AS and save myself the $10 (I work right next to an AS).

Incidentally, Itunes Plus dropping down to $.99 too supposedly.

Only thing I'm feeling annoyed at is having to dig up all my email receipts so I can redownload all my installed software after installing Leopard.

Although good thing about OSX...I can just drag most of single package apps over...

Wow through ADC you can get a MBP for $1600. Thats crazy. Although would you have gotten the free ipod if you ordered before September 16th?

 

You can only get the discount once though.

Although - you probably really only would need to use it once really. How often does an average person buy new computers anyway?

 

Regarding the dismal Student Discount...this is why I've always maintained a "Leopard will cost $129, and Student Discount is expected to bring it down to $69". If you read through my previous posts regarding Leopard's pricing, I have always stressed the "expected" part, as I had a feeling Apple might be increasing the price of its amazingly cheap Student Discount. That $69 couldn't stay too long .

 

Contact Apple (through phone or Apple Store or whatever), and express your frustration and disappointment. The Apple customer support will most likely give in and let you have the discount as well .

 

Pre-ordered it the second I saw the announcement this morning, lol.

No dice. Phone support was useless, as were the people at the Apple store. Not a huge deal, really, but it would have been nice to get something out of this.

How so? I checked the preorder site for all the texas uni's near me. They all showed 116.

He means the actual university bookstore or computer store. Many universities will buy licenses in bulk from Apple and then sell to students, faculty, staff, etc. directly from the university store at university pricing. Pricing usually ranges from $0 to whatever Apple's normal educational discount may be. (a lot of universities actually offer operating systems and office software to students for free).

 

Even if you ordered on sept 28, try the online upgrade form anyway and put int Oct 1st. I did that and it worked fine. Granted I ordered from a 3rd party and it was on the 30th, but still it's worth the shot if you haven't tried already.

 

The only "apple" software my University sells is "Office 2004".

I will! I'm only installing it on the mbp...using the upgrade option. No time for a clean install. Incase it's super buggy, I will have my rock-solid-tiger-running iMac. I don't have time to deal with computer problems right in the middle of the semester..so I'll install it on my laptop only and do fresh installs when I'm done the semester...cant wait til next week though!

 

I'm not getting Leopard anytime soon but I was just wondering...has Apple used up all the big-cat names for their OS's? Whats the next big thing, the next OS codename, or big-cat names left?

 

Lion still hasn't been taken yet. Apple trademarked Lynx and Cougar back in '03.

 

Just did that, and the order seems to have gone through. Will be keeping my fingers crossed that it'll ship on or about the 26th. I feel kind of guilty, but my checking account feels much better. If it does end up getting canceled, I won't complain. It was still worth a shot. Thanks for the tip.

 

I'm one of those new Mac noobs who can get Leopard for a mere 10 bucks. Actually, OS X 10.5 is the 1st operating system I've ever bought in my life.... outside of those that came preinstalled in my previous laptops.

 

I have just been on the phone with Apple (for about 30 minutes!).
The bottom line: NO sympathy at all. I bought my MBP on Sept 24. They have 'drawn a line in the sand' at Oct 1. Anything before (contrary to advice I got in this forum--non bitter, just disappointed) Oct 1 and you are sool!

And as for educational discount....not much! It is $103 Cdn.

Try what was suggested in post #41 above. Fill out the online form and enter Oct. 1 as your purchase date. It's worked for both of us so far. Obviously, we'll see what happens come the 26th. If Apple cancels the order, no harm, no foul.

 

I'd call them back if I were you and speak with a perhaps more sympathetic agent...

On the other hand...you knew leopard was coming in October...so you could have waited. But I guess...for like a week...they ought to give you the upgrade for free!
