OK now im in the opposite boat. Im actually trying to get mine to GSOD so see what everyone is talking about. 10.8 drivers and rendering maya while running furmark while in mafia 2 letting it sit.

30 min, no gsod. If my machine is more tolerant, explain what it is tolerant to? And dont just say GSOD's. What exactly is causing it? If its a timing issue, then EVERYONE would see this. Thus, there are different revisions of hardware deeming it a hardware issue. I still have 100 bucks on it being hardware.

I just wanted to say good luck to all of you guys. Hopefully the GSOD issue will be fully resolved soon by ASUS.

For us N71JQ owners, we had a problem with the fan ramping up and down every few seconds (0rpm to 3300rpm).

Finally after a 4 months of wait, ASUS released a bios update today that fixes it. :D

At some point we thought ASUS will never solve it as it was reported to them back in start of April and they confirmed it in May, but never released any solution until end of August and this was relatively easy problem compared to the GSOD issue that G73 owners are having.

For the N71JQ users Ken Lee from Gentech PC was a great help.
He kept on following the issue with ASUS until finally they released a solution. :D

I got a white screen of death on YouTube.

I'm considering the MSI vbios, but I don't want to run the risk.

Stay in stock vBios and 10.1 combo for now. People is busy in a working solution which show up soon. After 2 weeks from the original announcement, the keyboard fix is already out.

I got a gold screen of death before. In some cases, the screen takes the color of what was displayed and turns it into a unique form of death.

The video I was playing was displaying mountains and stuff, then BAM!! GSOD (gold/green/grey/grape/ screen of death).

Hello i'm Andrea from Italy since i installed the driver from ATI www site the 10.7 catalyst before and after 10.8 i continue to have GSOD mostly in all red, white and black and vertical lines in grey.

I still have the original Vbios only the Bios 211, since i read from days both Asus and Amd ATI cant fix this problem and i'm really mad since i payed 1500 $ for this "super" laptop, can anyone tell me how i can return to the old catalyst driver and how i must do to return at how was before since i tried to uninstall the 10.7 or 10.8 and reinstall the Video driver from Asus driver but after that when i run the 3d games they dont run on lauch.

There is a correct procedure for reistall the old video drivers
    of january 2010?

Thank so so so much i'm becoming crazy with this computer.

Unless you have a good reason to run 10.7+, stay on default/stock drivers, or 10.1 off asus' site. There are only a handful of apps or games that refuse to run on stock drivers, and most of those are still in beta or just coming out.

There's a million guides on the forum alone for it. I'll let you off this time, but the search function is loads faster.

Just do a clean install of 10.1. To do that, download it (Chastity has a link for it in her signature- third link from the top and when the page loads, scroll to the end of her post). Once it's downloaded, run the install tool BUT hit Uninstall when prompted. Uninstall everything. Go to Computer, System Properties, Device manager. Check the Display Adapters menu, make sure it says Standard VGA or something to that effect. Then download Driver Sweeper and install. Chastity has that link too.

Reboot, mash F8 during POST until it gives you the option to boot to safe mode. Once you are in safe mode, run Driver Sweeper and check for ATI drivers. Once it's done analyzing, clean whatever is left up, reboot into Windows normal, run 10.1 Install again, and this time install everything. It'll ask to reboot after you're done.
Once you finish rebooting, you're good to go.

hi guys, i know this is a noob question but i just want to make sure.

i am currently waiting on my g73 to come in, and i am the type of user that would like to be updated on anything that can be updated on a computer.

so my question is, if my computer is running just fine..will updating the bios and vbios give me any sort of benefit whatsoever? or is this just to fix an issue?

    just a curiousity...

How can you be so damn sure? I do hope it gets fixed cause its a huge pain in the rear if ill have to sell this and get another laptop but i really cant understand how you just blindly trust in something like that especially considering Asus past. And youre buying it knowing how many problems you can face is also something i dont get...
The W90 model (the crossfire 4870 model that was also a huge hit) got an "official fixed" vBios update (you can find it on Asus support site) which never worked for many people like our "Beta vBios" and consequently theyre still stuck at stock drivers like us. Not to mention the missing keystrokes have been around on their laptops for over 4 years!
Im being very paitient waiting for as long as i have but i wont believe Asus has changed until i see an actual working fix released.
The keyboard lights are a start but considering they broke the lights themselves releasing a bad winflash utility and telling people to use it... well lets just say that helped those unfortunate victims of their mistake whod have to wait 2 months if they RMAd it and hope they dont get it back with some other problem which is also something i just cant understand how it can be allowed happen.

The 209 bios fixes many issues so its a must if it wont be installed when you get it and the 211 is optional if you want a few degrees lower temps as some users claim, but it will get louder faster with it and it doesnt give you any other fixes than just the fan profile changes.
If you have problems on the old vBios, the beta vBios wont fix them, but it has an improvement - working powerplay (underclocking automatically when the GPU isnt at serious load).
About the software theres loads of other threads, just read what to install and what to get rid of to avoid freezing (for example Creative is a must to uninstall).

    ^thanks for the reply,

i was wondering does the RBBX05 model come with the creative sound device? or is that just software enhancement?

i hear that the sound device for the G73 is from realtek? or am i wrong?

Hi I'm Andrea from Italy i wanted to thank you Kaeland and Castity because i finally follow their istructions delete all the AMD ATI new drivers and reistalled the 10.1 asus catalyst driver with Bios 211 and i dont have any more GSOD or vertical lines...for my opinion is better dont install drivers from the ATI web site and wait for a new drivers officially from the Asus driver web site that can be tested and certicifated for the G73Jh-A1 !!! dont try now to install other drivers if not is a nightmare!!!! Anyway is really incredible how a super internation company like Asus take 4 or more months for send a new working driver expecially for their " best " laptop....this is sad yes..

    Thanks again people

Andrea the 10.1 drivers are just reference drivers from ATI they were not in any way changed by Asus, they just uploaded them on their website. And we NEED the newer drivers to use some software and play some games becouse they do not work on the old 10.1 package. And seeing how Asus does things they probably wont upload newer drivers themselves especially since they know they dont work with their vBios. The drivers arent the problem but the bad vBios asus gave us for our laptops. And please at least try to write in proper english. Its hard to read your posts.

this is becomming a game of one-upmanship... it won't help anything.. i don't mind u contributing but be a little optimistic.. being defeatist doesn't help.. of course when nothing was being done , u had every right to be angry and be defeatist... now that gary is making stuff done , just wait and be more positive... a little anger is ok but too much is not.. i personally know.

Oh im holding back, trust me. But my patience has run really thin after all this waiting. And reading these and Asus VIP forums and discovering how old these problems are and how Asus has dealt with them in the past isnt reassuring, but im doing my best.

Im now still waiting to get an answer from Gary to see how serious he is about solving our problems.
I made him a great offer - to give him, in exchange for a properly tested fully working one, my problem riddled machine which just cant be fixed even with changing parts so many times so he could have an excellent test subject for developing a new vBios and ATK/Synaptics software, since he says he has trouble replicating the problems on his hundreds of great test machines.
I should get an answer soon if hes checking these forums as he said he would.

Edit: Yep, the W90 is one of those examples that never got fixed...

Sounds like a solid idea, sendin em in your problematic one.

Hell, I'd send em mine too if it would help. As soon as I leave the asus stock drivers on this machine it gsod's every like 10 minutes, lol. It also goes into rolling driver crashes sometimes instead of just GSODing.

Sitting on stock vbios/stock drivers it's ok, but try to update it in any way and mine breaks nearly instantly. :/

did you try setting the clocks to 705/1100? Mine broke nearly instantly like within 5 minutes of playing any game on non stock drivers. But as soon as I made that change its stable.

I would if it wouldn't cause it to generate more heat. My G73JH is already pushing 109 at max on furmark, and the guys at BTO said that's perfectly fine, that the censor may to too close to the ram or something.
It doesn't over heat with leaving SC2 on 24/7 for days on end, so im assuming it's ok, but I don't know if upping any clocks would be.. safe? with it like this or not. I don't want anything melting, lol.

Also, what would I up them with that would keep them locked in at those clocks?

AMD GPU Clock tool. I actually have it in my startup programs and it sets the clocks automatically at windows startup.

    "C:\Program Files (x86)\AMD GPU Clock Tool\AMDGPUClockTool.exe" -eng=705 -mem=1100

Good question! Updating your BIOS to a non-asus bios breaks your warranty, I believe ... does the beta vBios count as "official"?

well all the bios numbers in Gpu-Z are still the same. Only way they can figure it out is if they are looking into ccc and find overdrive from there :D
But ofc IF they are looking it. My problem @the moment is bad gpu/mobo (not sure myself).

After spending a few days with the beta, and reserving judgement until now, I firmly believe this beta vBIOS is worse than Ziddy's vBIOS in every possible way.

No wonder Gary didn't push this thing for release last Wednesday. I sincerely doubt Mafia 2 and Metro 2033 caused hiccups that made his team to pull this thing at the last minute. The truth was, as its been all along, they have no viable solution to this problem. Frak.

What do u thing guys, is the gsod problem GPU or Mem.
I think its memory, because it seems to go away if u only oc Mem.

Its not the same thing but i have ATI HD5970 and i had to rise 2D values higer to get it work like it has to. Before i got really low perf iven looking vids in youtube.
Seems like the gsod problem is low clock speed.

It's not just for the hope of getting a new working unit. I could just as easily RMA this computer to get it fixed (hopefully <_<), or sell it. I wouldn't loose much since it's not old.

I'd rather Gary have the ability to see units that are having problems under the care of average users like me. Then he can dissect the problems.

I have tried the following clocks, all resulting in some form of GSOD on the unmodified beta vBIOS: 700/1000, 705/1100, 710/1000, 710/1100, 695/1000, 690/1000.

So I figured I should try the vBIOS w/ OverDrive enabled, since the unmodded beta gave me no luck. However, when I tried to flash it from my bootable USB, i received this message:

    "File g730810-overdrive.rom not found.
Error 0FL01: Press '1' to continue."

I checked the USB drive, and the overdrive rom is indeed on it, so any ideas as to what the hell this problem is?

    check the .bat
    win98-msdos doesn't support more than 8 char long...(aka 8.3 filename)

    command line should look like this : atiflash -p 0 -f g73081~1.rom

mm new vbios+10.7a ---> unigine benchmark 2.1 doesn´t work in opengl mode (test don´t initialize and black screen), but in dx9-dx10-dx11 works fine...

(FxIV BENCH , 2 times (1080p and 720p) Furmark 16min and 10min extreme burning mode, l4d2 "heavy rain"20 min, 3dmark vantage, Bad Company 2 15 min, Alien Swarm 1hour , all without GSOD)
