Matrinix is correct, the Asus G71GX-A1 will feature the Intel® Q9000 45nm "Montevina" Core™2 Quad 2.0GHz w/6MB L2 On-die cache - 1066MHz FSB by default, however, you can select a Core 2 Duo or faster Quad core CPU in the Xotic PC configuration menu when you customize the notebook.

Just got back from Bestbuy and there was one on display , It looks pretty nice in person overall .
The screen while not the best quality buy any means was not bad but not great either, viewing angles were what i expected where only it was extreme washout from looking down at vertically but still very manageable overall for the $$.
The machine was ice cold to the touch which is always a good thing, i didnt remember to bring my thumb drive to check the temps but i will tomorrow, they had 2 instock but they were unloading the truck and i would have had to wait hours so ill head back in the AM and decide.
I wanted the Win7 and the guy there said they could do a return with just the receipt at a later date so i could get the Win7 free but id prefer to handle it all in one transaction . -

I also just got back from best buy. My local store had not a single asus product on display except a random monitor that was 30% cheaper at newegg.

Ah i see. Quadzilla, thanks for going to best-buy for the little review. Its comforting to know that it doesn't run hot, but that doesn't say for the actual G71GX-A1 that was delayed, because it has more advanced and better parts
-
Any initial temp check would be great, and I didn't expect the screen to be the best but it's good to hear it's halfway decent, probably resetting the colors in the control panel will do wonders for it.
Can't wait till FRIDAY! YEEHAAA!
So are you getting the G71 for sure? -
Yes im 99% sure ill get it tomorrow, i have a usb stick loaded up now with HWmonitor and Orthos ,Furmark lol , dont know how far ill get to actually use them but if there being cool i will try and run them for a couple minutes before making my decision.
I have a feeling these things are going to sell out instantly just like the gatewaysFXs did for along time .
As long as temps check out fine, even idle temps if i cant run orthos or furmark then ill be getting it no doubt. -
They will let you play around with it if you let them know how important those tests are in your purchase.
If you can run FURMARK at least it can tell us something( Gpu heat?)
Just give the sales person a mean look
Can't wait to see reports on #'s, but I'm also 99% sure this is my next laptop the tests will help out a lot.
Hows it look size wise? How's the keyboard/touchpad feel? and do the pictures posted do it any justice?
I'm sure up close and live it looks fantastic.
Keep us posted buddy.. -
It does look nice in person, the keyboard has sort of a grainy texture to it which looked pretty good, the touch pad is Tiny as heck but i rarely use one so that matters little but it seemed responsive for how much i used it.
Size wise its pretty darn beefy but i lifted it up abit there was no battery in it though and it felt rather light but solid. id say overall it looked like a good purchase and had they had them on the shelf at that moment i would have walked out with one . Considering Win7 is free along with an already amazing deal spec wise this one will be hard to pass on.
Oh and i did play with the G51 today as well and boy its another beauty for the cash without a doubt and like you again im torn on which to get honestly . The thing for me is at the end of the day i want a performer and one that may have a better upgrade path IE quadcores and Overclocking on both CPU and GPU without heat issues .
If i were just going for something that would play a game on a rare occasion and wasnt looking to ever add anything to it the G51 would be my first pic no doubt . For $150.00 more though your getting a bigger harddrive, more ram and quite abit bigger CPU which in the end to Me is worth alot more then $150.00 .
With G51 your getting the LED screen which was better then the G71s but not miles better and the backlit keyboard which also was pretty nice.
If the G51 was not having heat issues i would probably get it over the G71 even with less specs but i dont want sometime im focused on the temps more then just enjoying the machine . -
I bought mine at Best Buy two days back (but I am taking it back today, on paper, to get my free Win7), it was the only one they had in stock (other than the display) and I was told they were not supposed to go on sale until the 28th of June but that store only had two laptops on the shelves so they opened up the new ones.
I am very impressed with it. I have it overclocked to a stead 2.9GHz (that pushed the Windows score in Vista to 5.6 from 5.2) The biggest issue I saw was the lack of the hard drive tray for the second hard drive bay. I know it does not have the OLED screen, bluetooth or a blueray drive but it is still an impressive device. I also have the Gateway FX-7805u and so fare I like the Asus better. -
-
i just picked mine up. i notice there isnt any volume controls.
-
-
yes but no quick buttons
-
plus no information lcd screen, but had the software installed for it.

So far requested we have
3Dmark06 -madmook
Temps (under tress please) - me
Volume control keys - matrinix
Crysis
Thanks for the reviews -
add crysis to that list Melinapayne

Howdy. I loved the G51, but it ran sort of hot and I returned it for the G71
BB G71GX-RX06
LCD LGLP171WP4-TLN1
MultiDVD
6 gig DDR2
500G HD (sucky 5400rpm)
P8700 (overclocks to 15%)
Bluetooth??
Wireless G only?? I think so..
I've had it about 15 mins and it's going back due to locking up at standard speeds. Quite frankly all I've done is sit here and look at it and it's had to be rebooted. Just my luck, but I'm waiting this one out at a cost of a 15% restock.
G51 keyboard is nicer
G51 OLED screen looks sharper
Overall feel of the G71 is more ergonomic
fast as heck ! -

-Crysis goes from 24FPS to 2! TWO!
here's why=
-apparently according to the rapidly-catching-up "Asus g71" thread, the GPU pretty much bricks at 82C, completely downclocks. is this it for the 71GX-A1? Not only one person has had this problem.
Hopefully the Quad-version won't have this....... will it? -
-
i was simply making a statement between the two computers. Correct. It will not change anything. Processing between the two are virtually separate.
what do you mean :"online" versions?
Asus delayed the GX-A1 about two weeks to fix a problem (Juston W from Xotic thinks its bios) but this leads me to think the problem is this.... maybe the smaller version was a... cheaper trial-run? -
And I highly doubt Asus would throw out a trial-run model, if that's what you mean? (Sorry, I didn't completely understand if you were talking about the model or BIOS, or something else). -
lol, why would you put a BIOS out on trial? i meant the whole computer. Maybe they know this A1 will be a huge hit, so they wanted to do a little trial run? idk
-
That'd be too stupid for a company to do. Too costly. -
yep I'm pretty sure that's the job for the company's engineers to test out the laptop before putting it out to sale.
-
I just ordered my G71Gx-A1 from xoticpc. I was reading the posts above regarding the delay. Are there problems with this model? I'm crossing my fingers and hoping NO!
-
maybe asus didnt take in effect whereever they produced the laptop, that the weather in the U.S.A. tends to get up to the 90-120F degrees in the summer time, and where they produced the laptop maybe its snowing.. hehehe who knows.. there ambient room temp could be in the 40-50's F degrees, and when i was testing the g51 i was in a room where it was 75-80F degrees..
-
so, what's the perfect test temperature? around 65? 70?
-
Everyone saying they bought a G71gx-a1 at Best Buy, please clarify the specs of the machine you bought.
My understanding is the BB model is NOT a G71gx-A1, but another G71gx version.
It's apples to oranges by comparison. Processor's are not the same, Screen not the same ( different native resolutions)
Perhaps the threads need to be separate, since this will cause confusion for potential buyers. -
Maybe the BB version G71 does, but the one I am buying is a G71gx-a1 and it has a Q9000 in it.
This thread is becoming confusing because there is too much misinformation on the model if someone is scanning through quickly . -
nobody is confusing them. We were speaking of the GPU problem in the BB model, and if it will carry over to the A1. We were talking about the temperature.
-
-
Woitte from Xotic said he thinks its a bios problem that they are holding the computers back for.
-
-
-
No Q9000 is 1400
-
so i don't understand. the only difference is screen + blu-ray?
-
From what we know so far I guess. There prob is other difference. I mean it cost a heck of a lot more.
-
anyone know if this model ASUS G71GX-a1 with quad core can be overclocked?
-
Turbo gear "should" allow you to Overclock the Q9000 maybe 10-15%.
-
Anyone know when this is actually going to come out?
-
Id bet good money around the same time that the internet resellers get theres in which is mid-July now i believe .
-
But if screen's your thing, you want blu-ray and built-in bluetooth, and are willing to pay, then it's all good. -
-
I'm confused. If the GPU downclocking starts @ 82 degrees Celsius that translates to something like 177 degrees Fahrenheit. Wouldn't the Gpu have to shutdown @ a temp like that?
