    i wish i had 2K to drop on a laptop :p

BB versions for the budget-friendly ;)

honestly though, the BB version is still pretty killer for the price.. I havnt seen another laptop with those specs at near the price yet.

th "best buy version" is a year and a half old, offered for a limited time (or so i heard) unless the tard at the computer store had no idea what they're talking about. which they lied about XOTIC being out of some dudes basement. SHADY MUCH? I do NOT recommend redbarncomputers.com

The Best Buy model is NOT a year and a half old, technically, it's not even out yet. There have been versions of the G71 and G70 in the past, but I don't think Best Buy ever carried then (the resellers were the ones who sold them). However, the G71GX (which is what Best Buy and resellers have, just different configurations) is a brand new model.

They are probably telling you this to increase your chances of buying the reseller configuration.

Just noticed this from one retailer
I guess you can't use the ASUS built in OC feature with Quads
so if you want to OC the G71 you are going to have to use setFSB

::sigh:: I want Ken's shipment to come in now.. I can totally see them making it arrive late Thursday afternoon to keep the Windows 7 crap underhood.

::sulks:: Only a couple more days, I suppose, 'til I have my baby. Hehe.

20% may not be dangerous only if you have sufficient cooling to keep it at a safe temp. i remember the msi gt627 with a 9000 could only be overclocked by 2% which was just a .16MHz increase in speed.

Well considering the higher TDP, and not the most efficient cooling solution, issues with tempererature can arrise. But if not, then y not OC 20%. But remmember, CPU's don't tolerate temps above 80C (176F)
You can tell that it's stable if you don't get BSOD's, nor of your system freeze up or restart. This could even happen while surfing the web. Best is to put the machine under a stress, which can be done with the programs I listed below. If you finish the stress test successfuly with no errors, then it means the OC is stable.

Prime95, Orthos, OCCT....(there are many more, just listed some which I use)

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but the G71GX-A1 has been delayed until approximately 7/13 from what we heard from ASUS today. This could change but as of now this is the ETA.

BB has the downgraded already, how come they're delaying the real thing?

Personally, I don't mind the wait, particularly if allows Asus time to iron out any wrinkles that pop up following the release of their budget models.

It can't make their vendors very happy though... Hopefully for you all, the G51/60's won't suffer the same fate.

Very true. Its not that I mind the wait, its just that I'm going hundreds, maybe thousands, of miles away from my house in early august for college so having this lappy is very necessary..

and of course playing some games during the summer definitely wouldnt hurt.. ::snicker::

I hold no anger towards the vendors, obviously. I just wish ASUS decided to play this game earlier in the week, not on the day I was supposed to see it get shipped out. Hehe. =]

Why do people act like the BB model isn't a "real" one? Because last time I looked, it was.

Downgraded, yes, in a way. But I consider it more what it is--a different model, for people who don't need things like Blu-Ray, bluetooth, a quad core, etc.

It's not downgraded, it's a different model with different specs, and it's not any less "real" because of that.

    Think about it.

I apologize then. I took it as they take the same chassis, fill it up with different specs (I think the processor in there was used in an earlier model, maybe the A1? Actually.. come to think of it. The BB version reminds me of the G71GA1, where it only had optical and 1 HDD (thats if I remember correctly) and they did the same configuration as the non-BB model which has a longer history than the BB version (G71G Q2, A2 just diff GPU) So instead of real, I should have said original.

regardless, I'm just gonna pray for an ETA that sticks. =]

Really dont understand why anyone would pay so much more for the deluxe version, its not that much better and will still get almost the same FPS in games ( less if you game in the higher native res), so why spend the extra 1,000? The maroon color looks awful. The extended warranty I guess is the only worthwhile reason. I do not support blu ray and if you do can by a drive for under $100. My only gripe with the BB model screen is so low quality. That's pretty much unacceptable for any laptop in this class nowadays, especially for gaming. Can the screen be replaced, how hard is that, and can the old one be resold for a decent price?

Well guys the BB is out and I am typing on it right now!! I must say I am EFFIn impressed as hell with this system. The only thing I do not like is the max resolution of 1440x900 which i thought would be 1920x1200...guess something went wrong somewhere! But I would highly recommend it. best bang for the Buck!

The current BB screen isn't terrible by any means. Maybe if you've been used to full HD, then yes, it won't look as nice. But if you're like me, whose been using a "normal", not HD screen, it looks awesome.

I'd love for it to be better, but it's not that horrible, and take the price into consideration. Sheesh, only $1,150, y'know. :p

it's probably only about 8 pounds, IF that. maybe closer to 6 or 7. more of the computers are. i know that the non-bb model weighs around 8, so given less parts, i'd say 7

Still haven't picked one up, but I've seen the one at Best Buy several times, asking about it, etc.

I'd say it's about 8 pounds, but I'm not the best with weighing things. It wasn't too heavy, well, for me at least. Then again, I don't intend to be lugging the thing around 24/7.

I'm still waiting for the newegg models, G51's or different G71's to see if I find one I'd like more.

There are different types of consumers , there are different stores to suit each need or financial situation.

There are more than screen differences in the BB model. Remember, BB is still making money off that version they are selling.
You feel the color is awful? That is your personal opinion. Reds/maroons are my favorite colors and this unit will look fine in my living space. :p

I personally would never consider buying an Asus model or any computer from BB, but that is the type of buyer I am, saying nothing against the type of buyer you are, ok ? I want that to be clear. :)

The Asus warranty is one of the most outstanding in the industry. And regardless of how I have let my emotions get the best of me in the past here on the forums, and I've complained, Asus tech support and that overnight free shipping to and from for free is most remarkable. Bar none. I buy high performance and I buy cutting edge tech and bumps in the road come with it! It's expected and normal.

I've been buying computers and parts to build desktops since 1994 and have never dealt with a better company. The motherboards alone were the reason I tried their notebooks.

Best of luck to everyone with where ever you decide to buy your next Asus . :D

P.s Delays always happen and I actually was expecting them to ship a bit later than the 24th ,, no surprises there!

Do you think you could put together a review of it with benchmarks, photos, temps, remarks, and screenshots of CPU-Z, GPU-Z and Device Manager / Everest? That would probably help us get a more informed opinion.

Dude, its a bestbuy model. He isn't going to stand there and just do us favors in the middle of a store. Sure it would be helpful to HIM, but he'd have to install the programs first. This is NOT the first time this has been asked

RMPG505--- +1 for explaining WHY the company is so good, and HOW it works, and why you chose them. I'm glad so many people are getting this computer. ITs too bad they delayed it. If it gets too delayed I have to choose another one. I need it for college by august

Went to the BB in Concord Pike, DE and there were no G-series laptops anywhere, including in the cages/racks. I'm assuming they're keeping them in the storage room until tonight or tomorrow morning...

Anyone know of a BB around the DE/PA state line that at least has them on display so I can get some 'hands-on' time with them?

The Asus built in feature for OC'ing on the w90vp works just fine .. The g71gx-a1 has the very same processor as the W90vp, a Q9000 -

I actually had to use the oc feature, due to the driver issues of the 4870's , in order to get playable frame rates in WoW on the W90vp in raids/battlegrounds. Setting to 15% was no problem at all and very adequate.

Most likely I wont have to OC the G71gx-a1 because the Nvidia card will perform better than the crossfire issues the W90 was inherently born with on release.
