i find it funny that after 7 years of having my current laptop, a dell latitude d600, with no problems besides being really outdated, that it's screen starts to die as soon as I ordered earlier this month xD
im happy these are shipping sooner than expected, this one will finally be able to rest in peace!

when you do the review, please also let us know if it's 1333mhz RAM or 1066mhz

Yeah if you can force fan speed you may find lower temps, but then we go back to what I said about the CPU' the lower temp is not going to increase performance or overclock as the unit will already be designed to keep it at a temperature cool enough. So you may have blasting fans keeping you at 60c and I can have quite fans with me at 75c and both cards will still perform the same. GPU can get very very very hot before they have ill effects.
I do like replacing the thermal pads with ICD24 though as I feel that keeps the ram cooler than it would normally be but thats just a placebo for me probably and ram is probably the component in your computer that can run the hottest of all.
Definitely there is no way to compare your machine to somebody elses, its not just ambient, its everything else too. Not all GPU & other system parts are identical yours may just run 5c cooler because it was made better. Even with CPU the TCase can vary by like 5% on each batch. -

Yes & Yes
Probably will have the other kind of bios images at some point too
everybody knows I like bios moding
See
Shame that image host I used back then seems to not show any of my pictures now
(the 2nd post is the one for editing the bios on the EEE)
Of course! I'll even tell you what kind of IC's the RAM uses. But most important of all I will tell you if the ram RUNS at 1333mhz. Its not uncomon at all to see faster ram in a machine but see it running at lower speeds because the FSBxRAM ratio is not set to take full advantage of it.
Dont cry if it doesnt because the perforamnce is increase is almost non exsistant if its faster RAM and also if its underclocked that just means more headroom for overclocking and that will by far be a larger system power boost and more important. I could only hope we have an unlocked bios to change those things on our own but I am almost 100% you wont see that as its just not something Asus does on there systems. -
seeing how once I get my laptop, my classes will get "cancelled" untill the end of the semester...
Its going to be the BEST 3 MONTHS EVER!!! lol

+1. Thank you for the detailed explanation. I had wondered why some people applying AS5 or ICD7 thermal paste to different notebook CPUs or GPUs had not lowered their temperatures. Some people even repeated the process believing that their application method was at fault.
I have lurked on this site for a year and continue to learn much from reading posts. I am interested in finding a laptop that has good cooling, an i7 processor, is DX11 compatible GPU and hopefully USB 3.0 available at a reasonable cost. I look forward to yours and other members reviews of this unit as I could forego the USB 3.0 if this laptop excels in all other areas. -
Quagmire LXIX Have Laptop, Will Travel!
Actually it clearly states on GenTech the thermal compund is for "CPU/GPU" and the GPU is the reason I opted for it.
Though, your following logic about TIM/Fan speed has got me feeling about as certain as a valley girl deciding lip gloss color
I guess I'll just wait and see instead of driving Ken crazy. Just my luck, I opted for the Blu-ray to stay on my A1 and now some A2's might go out first, oh well, maybe I'll get to see some hands on reviews b4 mine ships. -
Re:thermal paste not changing anything b/c fan is part of a temp feedback control loop, interest point!
But isn't the paste nevertheless helpful in increasing the maximum possible heat disperson when you take both variables of TIM (i.e., the heat dispersing surface area) and fan speed into account?
Is it possible that hours of heavy use on a lap while mildly overclocked may be too much of a heat load for the normal TRIM + fan to keep the temperature at its ideal setting? If so, then it seems the paste would be a worthwhile investment.
Maybe upping voltage impacts the heat more significantly, but upping the clockspeed definetly increases heat as well. -
Lol thanks for setting my straight there Vicious. I'm a noob. I was just going off what I had read here!
Just wondering if you or anyone else here will be doing a little guide to overclocking this beast? Or any other easy little improvements there might be. This is my first computer, and if it handles it well, I'll probably be OCing it. But I've never done it before -
thanks, Vicious.
Also, I would also be very interested to see how ATI Radeon Mobile HD 5870 stack up against ATI Radeon Mobile HD 4870 Crossfire

No problem, I have a lot of experience under my belt so I often will be the one to speak out against what is known to be common knowledge.
I'll definitely have overclocking guides and stuff, I usually have an evolving review. I'll review the unit in its out of the box state and thats the first review. People need to know what they are buying and what it can do without some kind of extreme mods or placing luck into the mix with a high overclock.
Later on once I know the machine I start diving deeper into it trying to extract the max power out of it and doing the more extreme kinds of testing.
Overclocking is not something we may have right away, we need the PLL code and hope its compatible with an existing overclocking program. For the W90 I think it was quadzilla that got the PLL code and emailed it to the developer for setfsb and he got us a beta of the program that worked with the W90 rather quickly, but it still was no 1st day of release affair it was a couple of weeks before we had that ability. -

me too, I expect the 4870 crossfire to win for sure but its 2 cards v.s. 1 and a $2400.00 laptop vs a $1650.00 laptop.
For me to sell my W90 for $1650 and get the G73 was really a downgrade and I love my W90 in every way possible. Im on it now and wont have it much longer but I just had to be in the mix with you guys tearing away at the new unit, its just like when I was in the Marines, more often than not I was leading a group of people to do something so it feels like my place.
Shame I dont get paid for reviews and stuff or get test units so thats why I had to sell the W90 to get the G73. Its not all bad though I find I dont play games on the W90 anymore just use it for music and internet and occasionally encoding stuff and a lot of photoshop. The G73 should handle all those tasks just as good as the W90 and still handle some decent gaming when I need it to.
If I can Oc all 4 cores of the i7 to 3ghz+ I will be happy, it will be faster at encoding than my desktop probably at that point, its running a Q6600 @ 3.6ghz. -
Well I got my state taxes, but federal is like 2 weeks later..... Taxact says the 12th but give another 48-72 hours to actually transfer the money. The IRS says the 16th.... Man that's just 1 day before the A1 is suppose to be out... All this waiting is killing me!!!! I must have my G73.......
-
I fail to see how leading a group of marines would encourage you to buy and review a laptop before someone else does.
-
Don't read so far into it He's just using it as an allegorical reference to him leading the charge on this new system for us.

Best news ever. Review on Saturday, sheesh, that's tomorrow....Awesomeness.
EDIT: I just realized, I'm going camping tomorrow and thus will have absolutely no access to a telephone, let alone a high speed internet connection, thus the much awaited review shall remain in the dark until Tuesday. Malicious fate kills me once again, when I'm the most vulnerable... -
ditching the camping, mate. There is no place worth going to (over this laptop) around Canberra anyway

Justin,
wen wil b the next shipment of those A2s? -

Hey Vicious,
On my desktop, my RAM is 1066, but when I boot up the computer it says 800mHz.
Do you have info or a link where I could learn to configure my BIOS to take advantage of the 1066?
I am not too tech savvy, but I can learn quick - just a matter of doing it right.
Thanks!

Name of motherboard and series???

First of all get 2 programs.
CPU-Z and Wprime
Install and run cpu-z it will show your RAM/CPU speed.
Now run Wprime and see if your ram goes up to full speed.
A lot of times the system is running correctly but people get fooled by the system downclocking when its idle and does not need full power. I forget what that tech for intel cpu's is called right now. AMD calls it cool & quiet.
This test will determine if that is why your seeing a lower speed.
If you find that this is not the problem, then the next thing is to go into your bios and change your FSB/RAM divider. -
3's roaming is Telstra's 3G network so you should be right. I think roaming charges are $0.50/MB.
So if you can handle 'uber lame' you should be able to see it. -

^^ Mhm, that's what I've found to be the case and thus I shalt be spending quite a few of my hard earned bucks (I'm hoping for vids here, you see) to be a part of the review while enjoying the wilderness.
Although, just to be clear, I would gladly taint my name with the 'uber lame' epithet to get a chance to get a glimpse at a review of the G73. It's been a long long wait.... -
Want confirmation as it's seems confusing to me.
I always thought the Mobile HD5870 was a HD5870. It's just the clock speeds were reduced to that around the HD5750 for mobile use. But some are saying it's based on the HD5750 completely? -
Yes, it is based on the 5750 card, not the 5870. There is no way to get the thermal requirements down to laptop scale on the Desktop 5800 series cards yet.
-
Desktop 5870 has 256bit memory bus and 1600 shaders, the mobile 5870 and desktop 5770 has 128bit memory bus and 800 shaders.
-
More like the 5770, 5750 only has 720 shaders. -
True, but the 5770 is clocked at 850mhz at the core. The Mobile 5870 is clocked at 700 for the core.
I would put it closer to the 5750 with that clock speed until we over-clock it to 5770 speeds. -
When are Reviews and Benchmarks due?
-
when someone actually get the laptop
-
Please read the Asus g73 owner's lounge for this information.
On another note, this is probably the most accurate data for what we will see with this card. Look at the 5750 OC numbers when reading the benchmark info.
http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/xfx5750/
It was done with a 920 CPU, but with the 80 extra shaders on the m5870, that might close the gap. I believe we could come close to the overclocked numbers they got out of it. -
I decided to go with more ram over SSD for now(Just to have it). The SSD I could buy later on and cheaper online and bigger size. XoticPC has the Ram listed from 8, 12 and 16gb sizes.
G73 will be used for Gaming/Graphics/Photoshop/Animations -
I just recieved my sager np 8760 on monday because i could not wait for this g73 no longer, i would rather drop some more money on a system that is already reliable and wont take 3 months to recieve. my sager is running crysis at 1920x 1080 with 4 aa and ultra settings at 29 fps, could i ask for effen more? the fans and cooling itself and the amazing display is in my opinion worth every damn extra penny, dont get cheap on a laptop imo. comes stock with a 820qm tooo. Good luck waiting all
-
You got your Sager on Monday, some peeps are getting their ASUS tomorrow, so it's really just 5 days the difference.
But grats on the Sager/Clevo, it does sound like a real great system
Out of curiosity, how much did you pay for your Sager? Any upgrade in RAM, HD? -
MasqueradingTeabag Notebook Consultant
Aw, dude thanks for your advice man. I just cancelled my order for the G73 and am just about order Sager np8760. Wish you could share with me your specifications cause I'm going to do exactly what you do from now on and post on this thread and spread the good news. Thanks, man. Thanks a lot. -
I can't tell if you are serious or being sarcastic.
Allanh he has to upgrade to make it up to spec with the G73. To do that, I upgraded everything the same, HDD, Ram, Windows 7 and I also included the mouse and backpack as that is coming free with Asus. The total is $2,678 (without cash discount).
I agree, waiting five days, you save $1,000. That's a huge saving to me. For others $1,000 maybe equivalent to nothing if having to wait 5 days... And it's still not DX11. I don't care what Nvidia thinks, I like the DX11, they can hoard CUDA all they want! -
I lol'd teabag!

Im a little confused...
while on the forum on the XoticPC site says:
"The first shipment of the Asus G73JH-A1 is scheduled to arrive at the Asus facility February 17th and the second shipment arrives March 2nd.
The first shipment of the Asus G73JH-A2 is scheduled to arrive at the Asus facility February 8th and the second shipment arrives March 2nd.
This is the absolute most update to date information as provided by Asus. If any website lists different information, then they don't update their website on a regular basis or don't keep in contact with Asus on a regular basis. Once Asus receives them into stock it will take approximately 3-4 business days for transit from Asus to Xotic PC."
http://www.xoticpcforums.com/showthread.php?t=5489&page=2
And as the time difference is only a few hours between the posts, which one is correct? maybe im misunderstanding something but can someone clear this up for me?
