Thanks I think I'll go ahead and preorder then. I would wait to see more info on it from CES, but I'm afraid with the popularity I'll get stuck waiting weeks on backorder the longer I put it off.

Yeah this comp seems almost too good to be true. Shame the local Asus Importer is not going to sell it here. I don’t want to pay extra for the international warranty and also wait a month every time something needs to be fixed. :(

Just FYI...you don't need to pay extra for the international warranty. You only have to pay extra if you want it extended to 3 years. The options, as listed at GentechPC.com:

    Warranty
x Asus 2 Year Limited Global Warranty
Asus 3 Year Limited North America Warranty : $89
Asus 3 Year Limited Global Warranty: $109

I kind of agreed with you when I first saw the laptop, but soon realized you could probably not fit that kind of power (with proper cooling) into a 15.6". I am resigned to a larger notebook now, but I think it will be well worth it!

Welp TBH, I am seriousely considering it..I have the cash, thats not a issue. Still have that bad taste from ASUS and a certian reseller.

If I do place a pre-order, it will be for one with the top line cpu though and the IC Diamond paste.

Well, thats true....although someone explain to me what the mean by

    "Intel® Core™ i7-920XM Extreme, 2.0-3.20GHz, (45nm, 8MB L3 cache) "

The cpu adjusts speed ? I mean is it 2.0 or 3.2 ?

Intel hardware isnt my speciality honestly...if this was a P6 or something....

One of the new technologies that allows the Intel® Core™ Mobile i7 architecture to so thoroughly trounce its predecessors is Intel's new Turbo Boost technology. Quad core processors have really only been good for people using software that can take full advantage of all four cores, because software that can not use all four cores benefits much more dramatically from total clock speed than it does from a couple of extra cores. The new Intel® Turbo Boost technology constantly monitors all four cores. If it sees that a single core is being pushed to the limit, while the other three cores are hardly being used at all, it will dynamically shut down the other cores and apply their power to overclock the core in use. In real-world terms, Turbo Boost can run the i7-820QM at 3.2 GHz for a single core, 3.0 GHz for two, 2.2 GHz for three, and then down to 2.0 GHz for all four cores.
(excerpted from an article I wrote for our knowledge-base).

While this is awesome, I still dont personally thing its much of a jump to spend a grand to go from 2.7 or so on the 720qm to the 920 extreme for a .5mhz different for it. just my opinion anyways.. maybe im just cheap :p

Can someone discuss the opportunity costs of buying vs not buying the better CPU options? 3.2ghz vs 2.8 is somewhat of a big difference IMO maybe in later games or CPU intensive games? I know my L4D 2 is getting some pretty bad framerates with a 2.5ghz penryn and 8800M GTX. I assume it is the 2.5ghz due to the fact that when i adjust the resolution up or down the framerate is pretty consistent.

With that said, is this laptop a worthy upgrade to my 2.5ghz 8800MGTX alienware m15x that I have had for coming up on 2 years? Thanks for the replies as I have been out of the tech loop for awhile. Is a 2.8ghz i7 much better than a 2.5penryn? peace.

    - Intel® Core™ i7-820QM, 1.73-3.06GHz, (45nm, 8MB L3 cache) ( + 476 )

    - Intel® Core™ i7-920XM Extreme, 2.0-3.20GHz, (45nm, 8MB L3 cache) ( + 976 )

True.....I guess, almost a 500$ difference there at Xotic...

Anyone know the OC'ing ability of these, will ASUS include their OC utility ?

We won't know how "valuable" the 920-XM processor actually is until ASUS shows off their BIOS. If the BIOS supports overclocking, the extreme edition processor's unlocked multiplier will make it a worthwhile upgrade. If it doesn't support overclocking, that's a very high price to pay for a very small speed increase.

Even the 720-QM performs quite well in games, and the newer the game you're playing, the more likely that game is to be using all four cores, instead of just trying to run off of one or two cores (Left 4 Dead 2, for example, fully supports quad-core processing).

Honestly, the 820-QM seems to be the best price-performance tradeoff, but the 720 isn't a bad choice, and if ASUS decides to support overclocking, the 920-XM will be a solid choice for those with the money to burn.

Well, the G73JH will have Asus's Asus Power4Gear eXtreme OC utility on board, but what I question, is whether or not Asus will be supporting the Xtreme processor this time around. If you recall, they did not officially support the QX9300 in the W90..... and we had to get the PLL and use SetFSB.

    :)

Yup, but their OC utility DID work with the extreme proc there, just only to 10%, not the 15% of the others. The only real reason SetFSB was used was to go over 10%/15% .

Could be right...I dident have that proc......I know was less than the others though because of no official support.

But non the less, gonna wait to see if the OC specs are released to make my descision regarding a cpu...like was said earlier, if you cant OC the Xtreame one, then I wont but it...not worth the extra 500 IMHO

Why did you go with the mid CPU? Seems like that is very expensive for minimal upgrade or are there reasons that I should take into account that is worth it? Any speculation on the desktop equilavent to the mobile 5870? Should I upgrade from my 8800M GTX and 2.5ghz penryn?

Core i7 is 20%~ Faster than Core 2
and since i720 run at 2.400GHZ in Dual core mode as far as I'm told so its equal to 2880GHZ Dual core 2 duo

For some stuff like video editing/encoding core i7 is actually 30-40% faster than core 2 for the same speed.

My understanding is the G73 will be a complete refresh over the G72, in terms of thermal design..... and that it's improved design specifically addresses the ATI HD 5870 card. Like the W90, I suspect the G73JH will run cool, but no one knows the fan count for the moment.

    We will know soon!

BTW -=$tR|k3r=-, I still have the w90vp....if I jump on this, it will replace that. I will sell my w90 for 1500-1800$ (pretty sure I can get that easy) so this will end up costing me maby 1k cash outlay

Of course I wont sell it till after I have a replacement....

from any of the well respected dealers represented here and having the product shipped to Europe.

To me the i7 820QM provides the best price/performance balance, and I want the extra L3 cache, speed and turbo boost, yet maintaining only 45watts. What appears to be only a mild increase in speed here, when considering in terms of GHZ, the gains are actually fairly significant. I draw the line here, and I can not find myself opting for the 920QM. Some will be satisfied with the 720.... some the 820.... and for some the 920 will be a must..... all a matter of personal choice and preference, I guess!

thanks for the reply. now to my concern about upgrading from a 2.5ghz penryn with 8800MGTX to this laptop. Is this a pretty substantial leap in performance here? Any guess to the desktop equivalent of the hd 5870 mobility? I know the 8800M GTX is roughly a 8800 gts 320. Thanks for the input.

There is much talk and debate to your question, and to me, it's a bit early yet to draw real conclusions. As of late, the pages of this thread here have given discussion of this. I think we need to get our hands on these new cards, and take them through their paces, and DX11 will be a new adventure.

I have high hopes and can't wait!

I'm ordering to Europe as well, the UK actually, and have found Gentech so far to be very accommodating - XoticPc seem to only offer UPS express which charges brokerage fees on top of everything, making shipping quite expensive internationally but Gentech also do USPS which is a massive saving in cost but would still have the item fully insured.

Then again, I know all retailers price match so if you brought that up with any of the others, I'm sure they'd probably offer it too.

edit:hi hi everyone forgot my manners :p

well first off can I tell you that reading through 55 pages takes long  :p
but if it wasn't for constant looking around (most of my searches landed me here lol ) i would have gone with the W2860CU, but yes when i saw the pre-orders for the ati 5xxx series from the europe site i decided to wait.

it was just today that i went to the usual xoticpc and rjtech for looking up if any new models came out thus far this year and stumbled across the g73 the card me jump for glee especially with the price it was going for and specs u got. did a search on google immediately and wound up here.

but for the most part i think i gonna stick to not being an "early-adopter" just make sure y'all EA's (no pun intended), put up the benchmarks as soon as you get them :D thnx much!

besides gaming i looking at grahpic work and multimedia (not high-end more entry level which a gaming laptop such as this should suffice :p)

When I tried to register for Gentech to see the shipping rates, it only listed North America + Australia + UK available for shipping nut nothing else that. No Europe. Does anyone know a viable choice for sending it to to the forgotten cold North (like Sweden?)
