I meant CPU overclocking. I'm more than happy with the GPU performance. although if manual overclocking of the CPU only yields a 10% performance increase then i think its best to just leave it. The graphics card seems to be better than my desktop 4870, scary thought.

I'm spoiled by my desktop i7 920 at 3.8GHZ on almost stock voltage. The touted cooling system of the G73 got me thinking i could get atleast a 20% icnrease over stock to bring it up to 920XM levels.

If they put a matte screen on this then it would be perfect.

What a blast. I never thought I would have a lappy that could pull 30FPS DX10 everything on high in Crysis. Not for $1600. Other companies are going to have to do some serious price cutting to stay cometetive. If these ever come to market in significant quantities, Asus may find itself on the tongues of the masses.

Sorry if this was mentioned, but how does the keyboard feel? Any noticeable flex issues?

so this lappy is like 260m gtx sli with super cool temps??

I bet this thing overclocks like a beast, ati cards are pretty good overclockers they tend to get good gains in games but less in synthetic benchmarks.

One question, When a laptop runs this well is there any point to upgrading the stock system aside from bragging rights?

And is this the best laptop on the market if it had 2 SSD in raid 0??

i would say it is the best right now for future proof. DX11 will become standard for all coming games. right now the M17x is more powerful but cost 2x more and only has CF 4870s with DX10. i am amazed at the 5870s. i can't wait to see them in CF. hopefully AW or Clevo releases these cards soon. as of right now, it's a monopoly from Asus.

One thing I want to stress to you all, this notebook is not as heavy or large as you would expect. It's sloped substantially so the only the back piece behind the display is large. Even right where the display is, it's thickness is about the same as my G1 15.4" laptop. Within a case design like this, probably best you can get. To get more, you're going to have to go with gargantuan Sager/Alienware.

I like this design, it really gives the G73 a sense, this is a portable gaming machine. It's not heavy at all, you can easily carry this around with one hand, with the laptop facing towards the floor. It's not heavy. I've never owned the large Sagers, only seen them. And to me when I saw one, portable would be the last of my descriptions for it.

There has been a lot of discussion about the wireless card situation. It's like beating a dead horse, but I have one more question. For those that have the stock wireless, are you able to connect to your N routers at 300mbps?

Guys im about to order this laptop. Just wanted to know, are there any issues or concerns from those who got it?

Any heat issues, DPC latency issues? audio/video stuttering?

the AW M17x is nothing but problems magnet. Im hoping this laptop delivers.

It's posted on Gamer All High/Gamer setting except for shadows, 1080 resolution, and 4x AA. It's outputting FPS in the low 20s. Not bad at all.

On another video, with same resolution, no AA, and same settings except for mainstream shader, it's getting high 30s/low 40s.

I tried 799/1200 like Justin did, but it was unstable. This I've been playing for about a 30 minutes now. Seems pretty good.

Crysis Warhead 1080p, Gamer Settings, 4AA. I get about 25-30 FPS average.

Believe the desktop HD5770 is 850/1200. So probably not going to happen on this machine, but pretty close.

    GenTechPC,

If you have DIRT 2. Can you run the built it benchmark and tell us the ave FPS you get? i would test this with the reasonable resolution(like 1440x900)

would like to know how DX11 benches with this card.

hehe, it reminds me of a little story.

Back in 1993 when I bought my second PC, which was a 486 DX2 66 (anyone old enough to remember it?)

It was the best desktop at the time (CPU, RAM wise).

Then I ran a game made in Taiwan called "Tien Long Ba Bu" on that 486. The characters were walking so fast that I could hardly see them lol.

I guess that's what you call an overpowered computer :D

I don't have DIRT 2, I'll see if I can download the demo version. :)

486 DX2 66? yeah I remember that, it uses crystal instead of chipset for FSB, at that time, if ou want to change CPU you also need to replace the crystal.

When 486 first launched by Intel everyone were saying: nobody needs a 486 CPU unless you are running a business with 1000+ employees.

I am now 50/50 with buying one of these. The only thing that is preventing me is not knowing if this notebook can run Battlefield Bad Company 2 at a stable 60FPS.. everything low graphics of course. Game play over graphics any day

I would be very surprised (and disappointed) if it can't.

If the latest video card and latest CPU with 8 gig of RAM can not run ALL current games, it would be a major let down.

Ziddy, the memory speed is pretty insignificant in the scheme of things. Can you drop the mem clocks down more towards stock and try to crank the core up a little higher?

Well, close to 20 hours with this machine and I haven't turned it off once. None of us have reported any problems with this, including artifacts, colored SOD's, stuttering or overheating.what is clear is that she runs cool overclocked, suggesting the fan architacture works really well. Someone asked if this is the best machine for gaming? Honestly there are 3 that are better. The dual card solutions (gtx280m x 2, 4870 x 2, gtx260m x 2) are going to beat this machine. But measured against any other single GPU machine, it wins by a large margin. I can't wait to see what the 920 does n this thing!! With only one GPU, there should be no issues like the 4870 x 2 lappies.

Still, taking price, power, asthetics and components into account, this is the clear winner at present. Unless you are waiting for a $2,000+ dual 5870 machine to show up in 6 months, I'd preorder this soon.

I would also like to confirm that the fans pull air from the top and blow the heat from the CPU/GPU and heatsinks out the back. The pics I took with my nikon d5000 clearly show no vents on the bottom or in the fron for air to get in. Furthermore, the grill on the bottom, as Ziddy said, is for the 6gb of RAM. The GPU and CPU are on one side of the motherboard, while the RAM is in the other. How could the fans pull air through the bottom AND through the motherboard? I believe a laptop cooler may help keep the Ram cool, but not much else. That's because, again, the fans, GPU and CPU are under the keybord....on top of the motherboard. I have seen no crazy high temps from any of the gamers/benchers that would suggest additional cooling is needed with the 720. Now, if mandrake or quad throw a 920 in there, that might be cause for a cooler.

That seems like it's getting pretty hot. Again, pardon my ignorance with this, because I haven't done much benchmarking, but I always thought that anything over 80 degree's and especially pushing 90+ was dangerous?

That's hot, no doubt. I am curious as to why there are 3 thermals being picked up by the ati tool.

Many owner's with gtx260's in their Asus machines would find those temps very normal when being pushed hard. And that's NOT overclocked temps.

I believe the thermals on the mobile chips are set to auto throttle or downclock when they hit 105c. Anything over 80 is hot, but not dangerous.

Yeah, it would be interesting to know what all 3 of them are, or where they are. That seems like a fairly significant increase in temps for just a ~100mhz overclock on memory and core.

Still fairly okay. High, but not dangerously so.

As far as I know, 105 is for CPU temps. GPU temps can sometimes be higher.

Was wondering the same about the 3 temp readings.

Darn. I thought that was for gpus. I wonder where sleey0 or some of the AW guys are because I'm sure they would know from their Ati experience what those 3 temp reading are for. My desktop Ati gpu's don't have trouble being read from the CCC or Rivatuner, so I never had that problem.

    No.

Thanks Cataclysm for that explanation. That makes perfect sense.

Just to be an @ss, I feel like quoting everything from now on and expanding this one post until it takes up 4 pages.

Sometimes people write things on a whole different topic after I write something. Should I then quote that post, copy the quote field, go back to my completely unrelated post and add it there? Doesn't make sense to me. And I don't see why you are getting so annoyed. It's not like I am regurgitating redundant information over and over again.

If I recall correctly, 110 was considered usable by Asus for the G1S line, shutdown was 115. :D

Dude, multiquote + edit, FTW. ;)

    It does? I'm missing something.

A big thank you to the notebook retailers who have been testing, or having their employees test the new units, as well as to the users doing the same.

Well although they are just 3 diodes, you can't really tell the whole cards temps, you can just assume they are within that area, i suppose if you had an overclock and it was quite unstable, but you were going off assumption that the temps are fine, that would be a rather innacurate diagnosis haha.

    Feel free, it's your prerogative.

Not that annoyed actually, hardly annoyed to be accurate.

Ah, I get it now. I thought your answer was to the GTX 280M question.
