Oh no haha, the ATI ones in general, I suppose ATI's cards will run close to each other when it comes to thermals, (I know mine have them 3 diodes,) so im certain the 5870 most likely shares the same.
-
Cata,
You've got to be pretty excited for that new Msi with the 5870. Looks like it is a more well rounded laptop than the g73 as far as the ports (firewire/express/usb3.0/esata).
It looks like a good machine, although for pure gaming I think the G73 looks like a good choice due to the great dual cooling system for the cpu/gpu. I will be curious to see how Msi designs their cooling system. I'm also partial to the g73 design, although it seems to be a love it or hate it type of thing.
Not yet! First ones will probably be shipping 3rd quarter of 2011. We can't wait! -
I wonder if anyone's gotten their G73s yet! I've just preordered mine last week from powernotebooks...
-
Apparently Powernotebooks isn't getting or shipping anything until Feb 17th and March 2nd. The other vendors all got A2s and started shipping them Friday and quite a few people go theirs on Saturday already. Many pictures and videos if you go back and read some of the previous posts.
-
hey guys, im simply excited to get this notebook. I haven't preordered yet here in Canada but I'm trying to find somewhere that will get me one the first shipment (this week). If not, I can wait. Im trying desperately to sell my P7811fx to cut some of the cost of this machine. Slight upgrade I think? lol
BTW.... love the forums... -
Ooops =.= Would you care to point out specifically what pages those are since I couldn't find any... Did anyone post detailed reviews/benchmarks?
Ahhh the wait is killing me! -
Yep, very excited about the MSI being nicely rounded along side the asus (And yeah i'd agree too, the asus looks like its built to game and take stupid temps.)
From what i know or have rather, MSI like a single FAN cooling system that works brutally efficient, the good side to this is, its very cool, and its stupidly quiet, tiny intakes from the underside of the machine mean that it works nicely on your laptop too,
And the good thing is, the 17**? unlabelled yets little 15 inch brother will be really close with a 5850 in it, so i can't wait for that either,
MSI do grand machines for a nice mainstream book with a nice finnish, but staring at that asus, it looks like a tank, and i'm guessing it feels like one too (material looks very, very stirdy.) -
The GX740 and GX640 may be 16:10, which would be nice, since the GT 640/740s were 16:10. If the the 5850 in the GX640 is GDDDR3 as rumored, performance might be underwhelming compared to the 5870 though.

Peeve of mine is when hardware sites and sometimes users post benchmarks at lower resolutions, because personally I can't stand running lcds at anything other than their native resolution. If I was going to run a game at a lower resolution, I'd buy a notebook with a lower rez lcd. Imo scaling sucks and I always want 1:1 "per pixel" accuracy. The only way I'd run a lower rez on a notebook is if I connected it to an external monitor that had a lower native rez.
I'm not suggesting that lower rez results not be posted if people are interested in the results.. I just don't get why anyone would suffer non-native on an lcd so those results are practically meaningless to me personally.
I'm still deciding about which notebook but waiting to see feedback from the msi when people get them. -
Then you miss the point of benchmarking, sir.
By running tests and receiving results in a non-native (low) resolution, it's apple-to-apples with other GPU's that were tested in the same low res. -
Would someboday who already got the G73 tell me something about the LCD.How does it looks like?
what is the manufcturer of the LCD on the G73? Samsung?LG? or some other manufacturers? -
Xotic confirmed it is a handstar model.
Quad said that the Led backed LCD is great to look at. Others have noted that if Quad liked the display, then ANYONE would like the display. -
This was mentioned already, display is a Handstar HSD 173PUW1, and screen is supposed to be a top notch.
-
Someone should Wiki this entire thread because now the G73JH is starting to be heard "round the world" and people are coming here asking the same questions over and over.

Welcome to our pain. We've been dealing with that for over a month.
Most of the info IS stickied in the owner's lounge thread that Striker/Vicious created. People are just lazy and don't feel like searching a little bit. -
The only two weaknesses to this system I find so far are:
The HDD. 7200 is the fastest available for mechanical HDD, so not much you can do unless you upgrade to the SSD. I would recommend not getting this upgrade as 80GB seems a bit small, I'd go for the 160GB or just wait until prices go down. Installing one should be mindlessly easy.
The second is the power plug. Yeah it's a straight plug that connect near the back on the right side. So if anything breaks overtime, this would be it IMO. This should have been an L plug. And the plug on my old G1 should have been a straight plug. Asus switch it around! -
Has anyone checked the HDDs if they are the Seagate or Hitachi models?
-
I can't see how a MSI laptop with an i7 CPU and a top of the line GPU and just 1 fan can be:
1) super quiet
2) a brutally effective cooling solution
It doesn't really seem possible.
-
I remember seeing information about how the G51J (also manufactured by Asus, of course) had screens from a variety of screen manufacturers, and as a result screen quality was all over the place depending on how "lucky" one got. Is this also true of the G73JH, at least as far as we know?
-
so far 3 people got it and they all said screen is a top notch.
-
That's a good question. So far, only a handful have them so it's not a good sampling to answer that question. I would say the whole first/second/third batch would probably all have this same LCD. After that, you may be right...
-
I really hope he isn't right. lol If I get one of the worst screens I'll be

deleted comment because it was just anwered quite well by a few users above me. Instead, how about more pics of the bottom area to put to rest that pesky rumor about air being pulled in to the machine from the bottom to cool the GPU and CPU.
Right, so here is a shot showing the bottom. The only point of entry at the front of the machine is that grill covering the subwoofer.
Side view of the bottom.
Full bottom view, showing only two sets of slots where air can be circulated around the 3 RAM modules and one heatsink.
Here are the two areas where those slots are helping to keep cool.

I found this bit very weird.. coz ALL pre-release g73jh material i.e. iaTa's CES pics and the CES hands-on and preview videos showed an L-plug..
Why would they change that??!
a couple of photos from the notebookcheck hands-on to illustrate my point:
Btw where is iaTa?? -

I know this question has been asked, but i dont think it has been answered. Maybe some of the owners of the G73 can give some insight on the speaker, subwoofer and sound quality. Im sure a lot of people dont really care since theyll probably use external speakers or headphone but i was just curious if the sound quality is pretty good stock. As far as a laptop goes how does it compare with other laptop speakers?
-
Who knows, ASUS could have shown up at CES with a stock adapter and thought, "man, we oughtta change that". So they fabricated (or just used) an adapter with an L-shaped plug. I wouldn't be too suprised if ASUS shipped out this first set to see what the general public thinks before making minor changes. I'm sure someone from ASUS is watching these forums along with others.
-
Yeah, regarding the L adapter....I was really disappointed that they seemingly have changed this. Bad call IMO. Hopefully they've hardened the power port, b/c I've had this break already on my old Asus Z71v. I actually had to disassemble it and solder a new port onto the motherboard (it was out of warranty after 4 years) but yeah....not fun. I managed to get the new one soldered on without screwing anything up internally, but it was very tedious.
-
Yeah Notebook Check had different specs too with ram/hdd if I remember right.
The L plug would be awesome, make this along with a more complete full size keyboard perfect package.
But I do not regret getting this, it's far better than I expected, it's amazing for $1550. -
Actually this is a good question, and I'm glad you asked it again. It has gone unanswered and I'm curious of the same thing.
-
As what people reported subwoofer is pretty good, quality isn't that bad, volume is pretty loud. for details search.
-
It's not like ASUS can't make an L-shaped plug and adapter for those who really want it down the road....
-
So I didn't check this thread in about 24 hours and it exploded into 100 pages more than yesterday. Though seems like a lot of the same repeated questions /facepalm.
-
lol. Remember a month ago when we didn't know anything about G73JH at all then the thread exploded because of the new design, new specs and all that?
you will suffer for one more week then the thread will probably be quiet again, most people will probably be too busy playing games
-
still waiting...

Waiting for?

Pacing back and forth in my house waiting for my G73...hahahahhahaha

same here!
I see you copied my signature =)
You pre-ordered 2/4/10, aren't you getting it around late Feb/ early March? -

think he's waiting for me to quote myself, since i answered this question at least three times since like page 570 or so. However, since I am super nice and all, I clicked on my name, found the posts where I talked about the sound, copied them, and pasted them below. You are very welcome, sir.
***********************************************
I am in the cafeteria at school and it is way too loud! You will not need headphones, unless you are using it at an NBA game!
************************************************
The subwoofer completes the full spectrum of music. It really is just as simple as removing the sub from your car. For those of you with a system, pull the RCA's from your amp, and you'll notice a big difference. It's the same with this G73, but on a much smaller scale. Why do people want headphones that can reproduce 60hz and below? Because they want to hear the audio as close to how the artist created it.
************************************************
It's certainly not a gimmick. The subwoofer in this machine works well enough to make the audio sound good enough to lose the headphones.
************************************************
I wish I still had my DAT so I could run it through a spectrum analyzer, but I am thoroughly impressed. The Subwoofer, being in the front, helps you to hear more of the mid-base. (I wold imagine Asus didn't make this a true 60hz and below subwoofer). Sounds like maybe some of the mid base is also coming from there....maybe 125hz and below. Still, the highs are nice and crisp, mids are tight, and the sub-base is better than I expected. I think the dpeakers in my old Dell Inspiron 8500 were better at everything BUT the subwoofer. If there is a place to adjust the EQ, I haven't found it yet, but stock is fine, even if all eq settings are at medium. If I can change the eq settings, I know I will be really impressed. -
Yea same specs for most but i changed out the i7-720 for the i7-820 and upgraded memory to 12gb just for the hell of it.
.....hurts not having a computer. -
I wasn't waiting for this..LOL
-
I'm glad the owners are spending time with their new toys. They may be able to uncover some overlooked problems or disadvantages to owning one of these fine laptops.
Nothing like a good due diligence to uncover hidden problems.... -

For you guys running temps, what program are you using to get temp readings?
Edit: ATI GPU Clock Tool, I believe? -
Well sad to say I had to cancel my pre-order with xoticpc. I found other online sites that had the A2 in stock instead of the A1 and will have it by friday. about 3 weeks sooner than I would have. So just counting down the days now, woooo hoooo
-
I have not run into any issues yet that i can think of honestly... Overall its a very nice machine ... Build quality is good , not the best i have ever owned but still very good and when looking at a machine like this the price plays a huge roll in what to expect and from that point of view its amazing what this machine comes with...
I have in the past year owned a W90,M17,(2)M17x and maybe a couple in between i forgot about
.. Compared to those machines it stacks up very well overall...
Things on this machine that make it stand out are the Screen is very nice, Bright,Clear, Great vertical viewing angles(this is what counts) horizontal are not that great but passable and not as important..
Cooling seems to be very good though the temp readings from AMD GPU TOOL i cant really make heads or tails of and dont know how accurate those are ..
Quiet... Ahh yes this one is important to me .. You dont really hear the machine so you should and can use this machine just about anywhere without annoying others or yourself
... M17x sounds like a small leaf blower with all 3 fans blazing but the new i7 model is supposed to be quieter so i cant really comment on that one but just using a comparison...
Keyboard feels very nice ... No flex that i can feel anywhere and the lights work well on it so i just keep them on all the time ...
Weight... This machine is very light and is no chore to move around .. You can easily carry it with one hand if needed without worrying about dropping it plus the back panel has a rubber coated finish which makes it easier to hold on to ...
Battery life ? hmm this one im not sure on but i have unplugged it and forced it into the battery savings mode but im not getting the Advertised 170 or so minutes they stated so i cant fully comment ... I never let it run down to 0 though so it may or may not last that long...
Well thats about all for now but hopefully this helps a little

new g73jh variant..
http://www.provantage.com/asus-g73jh-x3~7ASUL0RT.htm
only diff i can see is 640gb instead of 1tb(in a1 and a2), definitely not worth the $12 price drop from a2!!
guess this is th version that'll show up at newegg, amazon, etc
wrong photo btw(i hope!!).. -
We have a dutch review here, benchies need no language other than the 5870 is using 4xAA whilst the competitors use no AA in one benchmark I believe (and still blows 'em all away):

Hi guys have any of you noticed the antenna jack opposite to the kensington lock (to the left of the battery). Is this for an external antenna or what???
