I'm keeping an eye on Newegg for this one. They received the G51JX-X1 (no backpack, 2GB less RAM) a day or two after XoticPC and GenTechPC received them.
If you do find it (other than on Provantage), make sure you find out whether or not it has the backpack and mouse. The G51JX-X1 on Newegg had neither. This isn't a big deal if you don't need them, but you need to make sure there's $125ish knocked off the price as well.

So there's no way to do a clean install with the included CDs/software?
Is it unadvised to just uninstall the bloatware and NOT do a clean install of Win7? -
Your product key will work with an OEM copy of its matching edition of Windows 7.
I do this all day long throughout the week, and the links to OEM ISOs were posted earlier. -

Can't you just download a copy of win 7 off the net and use the serial that's located on the bottom of the machine? Not rhetorical, I really don't know.
Edit: sorry for the post. Thanks for the answer. -
Yeah, you technically could, but getting to the end of downloading a 3GB torrent and realizing it's either 1) a retail copy and your key won't work or 2) slipstreamed with a bunch of keylogging malware -- would make for a bunch of wasted time.
Plus you waste a DVD+/-R disc in the process. (Not that they cost a whole lot, but that's another 15 minutes lost in burning it.)

Man, I know you guys have waited a lot longer than I have, but if I can't find the G73JH in stock this week in any of its many flavors, I'm just going to build a gaming desktop and be done with it.
I'm a wimp. -
Sorry for the NEWB question, but about the OEM...We should install the OEM Windows 7 version using the product key we receive with the notebook. And what about the usable apps, like face recognizer on windows log on? Install over again? Can we find it separately on the internet? What app's you think we should keep? Thanks.

I'm curious why you thought the results would be the same? Maybe I missed something.
I would expect a 20-25% faster result with 8 threads on a quad core hyperthreading CPU, which seems to be in line with your result.
FWIW, my trusty ancient dual Xeon 3.2GHz desktop I'm on took 44seconds with 4 threads.

Yes, your OEM product key on the sticker @ the bottom of the laptop will work with an OEM copy of Windows 7. You will need to find this OEM copy.
If you use the recovery disc included with the G73JH, you will not need a key, since it'll already be activated and ready to go.
As far as applications, if it's not posted on ASUS's site in their downloads section, you'd need to rely on it being on one of the bundled discs. Normally it's not on those discs at all and the only way to install them is via the recovery disc. -
Nice job, m0. Will rep you when I can.
-
Very nice job at summarizing all the information new people need to know.
-
The sad thing is people will not even read it and ask if this is a good gaming notebook lol
-
I didn't see the answer to this in the next couple pages and was wondering the same thing. Does this mean we can't do a RAID 0 option when ordering?
-
I guess that it is always easier to type a question than take the time out to search a thread for answers.
-
You can set up Raid 0 or Raid 1 when ordering. If you check out the resellers websites, they ask during the customization of the unit whether you want Raid disabled, Raid 0 enabled or Raid 1 enabled.
-
True, and I guess they would rather be safe than sorry as well. It never really bothers me even though I do take the time to read all the information, but I guess people want to make sure they are spending their hard earned money on the right thing.
-
I assume your mean Hann Star / HannsG. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any displays with similar model numbers or any other LED monitor reviews for them.
-
I've never heard of them, either. I've replaced many LCD panels and never have I seen this brand. (Handstar)

I don't know how you guys can babble on for over 6000 posts in 2 months about one laptop, but good job.
Thanks m0_ for posting all that info, it saves many of us hours of sorting through too many posts. Good to see the first ones to receive the laptop like it.
I'm considering it in a couple months. Looks like a monster, I would love an i7 for work (and a 5870 for gaming). I'm surprised they couldn't even muster an e-sata port though, pretty strange... I have no doubt that it has been discussed at length before though. Oh well...
Sweet laptop, I do want. -

Yeah this cpu power wont be a problem for gaming except maybe with very very few exceptions.
Twin turbo mode brings it to 1.7ghz on all 4 cores. This means there is some method to overclock and we will at some point be able to raise it. -

Because even with 8 threads 4 of them are just "virtual" you still only have 4 cores doing the work. If you had a pump that pumps 8 gallons of water a minute, it doesnt matter if you have 4 big pipes or 8 small pipes connected to it the same amount of water is moved. The cpu is the pump it has 4 processing cores capable of pumping x amount of information a minute (in the analogy the water) and so having 1 big pipe to each pump core is just as effective as 2 smaller pipes. Hyperthreading just adds more pipes not more cores.

Adding this to the owners thread. I am just now getting good hands on time with the unit and right away while typing noticed I have a problem with my thumb coming in contact with the huge touchpad since it is so close to the keyboard and it can cause me to mess up my typing by activating a click.
Lucky for you guys and me there is a nice freeware program that will fix this.
TouchFreeze - http://code.google.com/p/touchfreeze/
Tried it using it now works perfectly with the G73, the cursor still moves around some while I type if i touch the pad but it doesn't activate a click so it wont make me mess up my typing and it does not effect using the touchpad when your not typing. -

For the same reason they added it to the P4, marketing. It did not add any performance on the P4. -
The latest Synaptics drivers have a setting for accidental-touch sensitivity like that. Assuming that this thing uses Synaptics drivers, I'd try just going into the mouse settings in the control panel and playing with that setting.
-
Quad ran it i think and it ran VERY cool
-
Vicious if your hand is above the asdw area is it still a problem? I don't want to run a second program just to fix that
Especially w/ the new esea config...which is a really sensitive program
-
Nope have not run it yet on the system......
I have a couple hundred games to test with the system and thats usually as extreme as i ever see the system being pushed ....
Unless furmark was made into a game i never heard of ?.... -
Something interesting... I just looked at the Gentech website and they're not offering Raid as an option anymore. Maybe that's related to the Bios issue.
But now I have two identical 500gb Hdd's and there doesn't seem to be any benefit to it... -
The benefit would be having 1TB of space instead of 500GB.

I have used the built in palm detection before on other models and was less than impressed with how well it works and found it caused some system issues. This program is transparent it uses no resources and works perfectly and it auto starts so you never have to worry about it. -

lol Glad to see the noobetry in this thread has subsided, anyway, my girlfriend is going to be getting the G73JH, and I can't wait to take it apart and see this thing from the inside out, and mess around with it a bit. I love the subtlety of it's looks. If I like my girls G73, I may just snatch one up to go with my Alienware!!1111.
Jokes aside, has anyone pulled the GPU yet, and can comment on if it's MXM 3.0b or is it the suspected usual Asus proprietary slot?Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -

No for me its my right hand when on the J key for typing, my left hand is not a problem, and wont be while gaming. -
Uh, anyone else notice that like... all of the posts in this thread in the past 30 minutes disappeared?
