The CPU can be overclocked up to 15% via Turbo Gear, right?

Interesting discovery for you guys, not sure what it means yet.
I used wprime 1.55 and did a test to see what happens with all 4 cores under 100% load, if they get overclocked any.
The answer as somewhat expected is no, no turbo boost kicks in once all 4 threads are started and they are @ about 1.6ghz.
The score for the run was 22 seconds. A far far cry from the 14 seconds I got when I overclocked my 2ghz Q9000 to 2.8ghz
However I wanted to test this hyper-threading the i7 supports, it can run 8 threads with 4 cores. So I set the # of threads to 8 instead of 4 and ran the test again.
The result was a huge change in benchmark scores. It went form 22 seconds down to 17 seconds. It doesn't make sense it should be the same, if I recall there may be a "bug" in wprime that produces lower times with more threads. I used v1.55 so I can compare my score directly to my old scores but will test again with wprime 2.0 to see if it was a program bug.
Without a single doubt this turbo boost technolgy will pay off in spades if you were playing a dual core application that needed more power than 1.6ghz. It could easily go to 2.7ghz and trump the stock 2ghz of the Q9000 I replaced.
But when the Q9000 overclocked so easy to 2.7ghz for all 4 cores this is a mood point if we dont find a way to push this cpu to higher clocks. Also whats so moot about it is that 99% of programs that really require all out max cpu power are the ones that are multi threaded and use all 4 cores, so it looks like right now for encoding and stuff @1.6ghz the stock cpu for i7 is not even as strong as last generations 2.0gz Q9000
I dont have any stock 2.0ghz wprime scores on hand for comparison, if anybody has some that would be really nice some that would be really nice so we can get a direct comparison of the clock for clock power of the i7 vs the core series.
Edit: same phenomena in wprime 2.0 about 23 seconds with 4 threads and only 17 with 8 threads. This may mean the cpu can manage to do more work even at the same clock speed with more threads, I dont know why/how but wprime is showing this. If thats the case and this grows liniarly even at only 2.0ghz you may find as much processing power in the new i7 as the old core2quad had at about 2.8ghz.
Will need more testing with other benchmarks to confirm, but needs to be an application that I can control the # of threads. -

Thank God, Had me flippin out. That was not funny. If you wanna be sarcastic, then give them an obviously sarcastic answer so the rest of us know your joking.
IE: The difference between the A1 and the A2 is the A1 comes with mobo installed whereas with the A2, you have to supply your own. Good Luck A2 owners! -
Where's everybody? Maybe finally sleeping?

Used to get 19 seconds :/
Here you go visc,
My machines acting a bit slow today, 50 processes running. 1gb of ram total.
Power Saver mode isn't locking the CPU's multi down so i can't get you a run of 1.6ghz yet.
Enjoy. -
For gaming, the hard drive/gpu are usually the bottlenecks right?
But a 2.8 ghz quad core would be nice...

I paraphrased the last 75 pages or so into a single post for people to read. Please point all future n00bz in this direction:

good job!

Interesting.. I'm getting a constant 16 with my W90/QX9300 quad running at the stock 2.53GHZ.. I would imagine if i ever overclocked it up to 2.8-3.0GHZ it would be at 14 or perhaps better at 3.0ghz+.. So 14 for the Q9000 quad at 2.8GHZ sounds exactly right on.. The w90 does have a desktop board, so not sure if that matters??
*I bet the G73/i7-920XM Extreme, 2.0-3.20GHz is going to have the best scores of all (obviously).. Hopefully this configuration will get tested soon.

Wow thats an amazing job ...
I was even more stunned to see my name in there so many times

If there's no RAID option in the BIOS, does this mean there might be problems setting up RAID 0 while reformatting the computer? Is there any point to selecting the RAID 0 or 1 option when ordering this?
Also, I may be missing something, but what is the point of having two identical HDD's without a RAID setting? -
wprime is multithreaded past 4 cores right? When hyperthreading is on it's like having 4 extra cores working, that is why the times are better.
I dont undertsand the point of turning hyperthreading off on an i7 unless you are going for maximum stable overclock. it's one of the last advantages an i7 over some i5s(desktop)
I always get faster rendering times with hyperthreading so its not just a gimmick or a bug in Wprime -
Nice job dude.. Thanks....
-
THANK YOU!
I have kinda an off topic question: Like you said, there's a lot of bloatware included and a clean install is recommended. As far as I know, recovery disks are included, but does that include a Windows 7 CD without all the bloatware? -
I doubt that.. I think you have to pay extra to get a clean Windows 7 DVD, although I'm not 100% sure...
-
no.

I can host a Windows 7 Home Premium ISO (OEM) if needed. As far as I'm aware of, it's not illegal in any way, shape, or form as long as a product key isn't distributed with the ISO.
I have Windows 7 Professional (OEM) at my shop, too. -
its still very illegal. you should be able to use your key with:

LOL I was *just* on Google searching for those URLs. I remember seeing them a while back, but couldn't remember where.

Hi all,
I'm new to these forums, but have been keeping an eye on this thread for a while. I am planning on ordering a G73A1 in the near future, and most of my questions have been answered earlier by the helpful posters here. However, I just wanted to ask (or, more accurately, double check) if the G73 would be a good gaming computer for its price. My apologies if it this has been asked before. Thanks! -
no. it isn't.
-
Definitely! Honestly, I don't think you'll find a better deal and power to price ratio in ANY other laptop right now. I really don't think anybody could be disappointed in this laptop if they already know it's included features. Keep reading reviews (especially the ones coming out in the next week) just to make sure there are no unexpected problems and then order (if you can wait that long).
-
Is that a serious question? ARE YOU A TROLL!? ANSWER ME!

WoW... Fantastic job!! Hey what game is that in the gentech video where the guy is on the bridge running between cars and shooting?

It's Modern Warfare 2 dude, im kinda suprised u never heard this one.

Pokemon Gold Version.

Silver more like

Until now I was, and yes, that was a serious question. I would rather ask a stupid question instead of putting cash down on something as expensive as a new notebook.
-
Based on the results so far, if you are simply looking for the best bang for the buck, there's nothing that can beat the G73jh.
-
ISC434, I was being sarcastic, this laptop is definitely worth the money.
It's included with new i7 technology, Mobility 5780 GPU, 8GB RAM, Great resolution, great screen, built solid, etc.
you will not regret it. I've been finding laptops for months now I have found mine.

Lol was j/k. Btw didn't know there was an x-3 model! I might get that instead cuz seriously who needs 1 terabyte of memory!?

I figured there was some sarcasm there
. I haven't shopped for a new computer in about five years, so I'm not completely up to speed on the new hardware and what it's capable of. It's about time I replaced this M170!

Alright well I'm just gonna give you the lowdown on this machine. Basically it's what would happen if icecube and the red hot chili peppers were COMBINED... ya feel me?

Thanks.. I have to pick that one up!

LOL, barely do word processing on this thing!

SO anyone know when the x-3 will be in stock?

I'm not sure I get the reference, not a big fan of Red Hot Chili Peppers or Icecube. I did get the point that this computer = awesome!
