Argh - wishing the money I've been waiting for would finally arrive so I can pre-order this thing already.

Then again, Ken from Gentech has been so helpful to me over the past two weeks that I don't really mind having to pay an extra $40 for what looks to be an amazing deal regardless

If i'm from the Philippines which retailer should I choose from??

And can i ask a question, if i upgrade the processor to 820QM or 920XM is there a big difference in the performance?,

And is the asus rog bag going to be different for the g73jh?? i'm just curious

That's one of the crappy practices of newegg. After tax, with an extreme proc you're looking at a $3K machine with a single GPU.

I've been hearing good things about gentech's international shipping.
and for me I would choose 820QM because of the price difference. (for the price 820QM is more worth it for the price)
and we didn't get a chance to see the asus rog bag so we don't know.

    Please compare ALL retailers

I just checked international shipping from one and they had only UPS as an option
You must concider duties taxes and brokerage fee's when buying
    UPS charges outragious brokerage fee's
I live in Canada and refuse UPS

Or have it shipped to a forum member in the US, and then have it sent as a "gift". Happy Birthday buddy! :)

Well you have to double check with customs to make sure
That Will not work for us in Canada, as even items marked as Gifts are subject to full customs

But have your friend ship it postal , you will be happier with the brokerage fee's :)

A pity i just got the Asus M60J, because this beast looks like something i have to own lol. :D

If i understand this cooling system correctly it will suck air in to the laptop from the front and spew it out at the back. Will it not be one hell of a dust collector? All the dusty air will go trough the system.

I'm going to be shipping to the US just before the Canadian boarder so then I can drive it across. I think that is the best way around the whole shipping cost + duties issue.

    Yes that works

At the very least you will have a personal duties exception
And as I pointed out courier companies can really get you with the brokerage fee's

Just so you guys know if you ship through USPS not UPS it will come through Canada Post and they only charge $5 for brokerage fees. The shipping cost is around $70 to where I live and then you may have to pay for the taxes when it arrives as well, but it is fully inssured.

Sin e I'm here does anyone know if there will be anyone selling this in Canada? I found the new G51 vx on a Canadian web sitr so here is hopeing the beast will come here soon.

I asked retailers if they had a cheaper shipping option than UPS and I had some reply with the USPS option which apparently is still fully insured and only takes 3 extra days over UPS for about $100 dollars less internationally.

It's worth getting in contact with your retailer of choice and seeing if they'd offer the same option (for me it went down from $249 to $139 for shipping to the UK from the US)

Okay, I can't take this any more. I MUST put in my pre-order!

Here are the upgrades I am considering (comments are most welcome):

i7-820QM -- This laptop will be my primary computer for the next three years or so and this option seems the most future-proof without breaking the current bank account.

    8GB DDR3 1333 -- Another future-proof option?

80GB SSD primary drive (for OS and applications) and
500GB 7200 secondary drive -- is this the preferred configuration? Better than Raid0? Also, is it true that you need to completely reformat a SSD drive every so often when performance starts to degrade? Would the "System Recovery DVD" sent with the OEM 7 Home 64 allow me to do this?

Thanks again for all your thoughts!

if I was you, I'd ditch the 820qm and get the 160gb SSD. more space=>less degredation with the same amount of stored data.

I'm kind of looking at the same set-up as you.

    I can't decide between:
    i7-820QM
    8GB DDR3 1066
    80GB SSD primary
    500GB 7200 secondary

    or

    i7-720QM
8GB DDR3 1333 (if the upgrade is worth it)
    160GB SSD primary
    500GB 7200 secondary

both of which keep it under $2,500

Hi avex102, Welcome to the forum!

I would not count on being able to get the G73JH through a local retailer for some time to come. I think your best shot will be to pre-order ASAP from one of the resellers shown on this page here.

This notebook is showing immense popularity, and when they ship, supplies are sure to be taxed by demand. The sooner you get in line with a pre-order, the sooner you can assure delivery to your door.

    :)

hey guys, I've been following the forum for a while now...and have read every single page lol. I am currently using a dell inspiron that i've upgraded to a radeon 4670, one of the oldest quad cores...4gigs of ram. BUT it plays games like a beast. I was wondering how you guys think this laptop may compare to my current desktop.

I've already preordered this laptop the 3rd day it came out lol. I jump the ball sooner than most people. The only thing i changed was the thermal gel w/e thing to the IC diamond compound. I hate it when laptops burn my huevos,
; ). Do you guys think the different thermal stuff will actually help? Thanks in advance!

Would it be possible to run 2 O/S's on this system. I'm thinking about running xp pro for gaming and 7 for everything else but I've never tried to dual boot on a laptop.

When comparing desktop -vs- notebook, both have their advantages..... but I predict, not only will the G73JH outperform your Dell, you will LOVE Stealth computing!

As far as IC Diamond, I have found it performs as advertised. With superior conductive properties, it should further reduce temps a couple degrees C, or so. To me though, what is more important here, is getting a second set of eyes on the application of the thermal compound..... just as added assurance. Also, I expect we will see the G73JH runs cool to begin with, so no cooked huevos!

    :D :D :D

This laptop will be ~2x as fast as your desktop. I come to this conclusion after seeing ~7,000 3dmarks for a stock 4670 GDDR3 desktop card. And yes, the stock thermal compounds generally suck, and replacing it can drop the temperatures quite a bit.

oops! I said that i currently had an hd radeon 4670, i meant the 4870 with 1gig. Thats quite a bit of difference lol. I suppose this laptop will be semi close to running as well as my desktop card?

Honestly I'm getting this laptop to run Diablo 3 on when it comes out in a year. I'm just getting it now because I work with webdesign/development and I would loveee to be able to do my work other places than behind this Fing desk. lol.

Note sure how it could be more powerful than the 4870. 800sp, 256bit bus and gddr5. Plus the 4870 I thought was comparable to the 280 GTX Nvidia card? I would assume that desktop card would be more powerful?

the 4870 mobile cards (aka 4850s) with GDDR3 256bit bus could be OC'd to match the desktop cards, I don't see why the same couldn't happen here as the mobile 5870 is supposed to be faster than the mobile 4870.*edit* nvm..that was CF 4870s =P

Ok guys I just ran 3DMark06 and the machine turned off and is now dead!!

What the heck! Tried holding power button for 7 seconds, battery and power out, no luck.

There aren't many people around so I can't do the same on the only other machine - gutted. Was such a good plan too!

One thing I did notice was that in power management the CPU was set to 70% max so I upped it to 100%. Really odd that it just died and can't turn it on again though. 3DMark failsafe maybe?! LOL!

Right now off to MSI to check something out for another member.

I have xp on my desktop so for gaming I want identical settings and feel if I take my laptop places to game which is why I want to have xp on there. I agree 7 is much more flashy and I'll prob use it for most everything else.

You hit the nail on the head there sir. It's arguable that performance is higher in 7, but there's no reason NOT to use 7. Especially when it SHIPS with 7 by default and you can't ask for no OS. Lets all just hope DX 11 takes off better than DX10 did.

Do you guys really think the ATi Mobility Radeon HD 5870 will be equal to the desktop 4870? I have a single 9800 gtx in my destop right now, and I was hopeing that if i got this laptop, it would be a decent upgrade over my desktop, but i did not expect such a big upgrade over my desktop (20 some fps boost on crysis on high)

    http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.p...ask=view&id=198&Itemid=1&limit=1&limitstart=7

what are the chances that the ATi Mobility Radeon HD 5870 1GB GDDR5 would be somewhat equal to the desktop 4870?

It should in theory perform somewhere between the 5750 and 5770, 5770 stats, 5750 clockrate.
