Just wondering, why is Joker praising Alienware in a thread called ASUS G73JH-A1 with ATi Mobility Radeon HD 5870 1GB GDDR5 and criticizing ASUS on ASUS Section of the forum, and recommending people to get the refresh? Does he work for Alienware or something? We know quality of Alienware is great, but we chose to be here. Why is he interfering? So far what I've seen he didn't post anything positive or any informations that could help us but praising Alienware.
-
I sure hope the G73 I get is not infested with NITs. If left untreated would that affect my FRPS in Crysis?

This thread has seriously gone to the dogs....egos clashing about a awesome, insanely affordable notebook....comparing it to Alienware; something not even minutely in the same price range.....
Nobody cares about anyone's opinion as to whether a $3000 or $1600 dollar laptop is better......like asking a guy getting Toyota on a bank loan to consider the new SLK.....grow up....save the thread.....
I want news about my future ASUS laptop, not some hair brain debate driven via a collection of unquenchable egos and stubborn quasi fan-boy enthusiasm. -
I was looking and didn't see that it had an e-sata port. Any reason why they would not include something that's as insanely useful as that? Even my G1S has one. I dunno, this could be a dealbreaker since I have a few TB external HD's that I enjoy the fast transfer speeds on.

jk haha...oh man, well im not expecting too much out of the G73 (nonetheless it will be good, but not AW good) after dealing with my G51Vx...but then again...this is a complete redesign, not a G50 + GTX 260M + C2Q = G51. it's been said numerous times, only time will tell.
im no alienware fanboy or anything, but i do recognize them as solid machines, and my future alienware purchase will be the m11x...once i build my desktop and hopefully sell this laptop. and i do believe Joker5150 had a reason to be here, he is buying one (for his girlfriend, nonetheless he is buying one). although he does have a tendency to prefer american-brand companies, as i've seen from his steam chats -
I just found it strange that there's no mention of it being a pre-order (when they usually do mention it) and you can already checkout with it saying it'll arrive within a week.
I'll just give them a ring tomorrow to get things straight.
And yes, it would be awesome to bring it home thursday
-
Anyone stop to think, between all the rants of bordem and "my laptop can kick your laptop's a$$ " statements, how dead this thread will be once the G73 is released? LOL
-
We'll just move to the Owner's thread then.
-
I just noticed the G73 on J&R's website lists conflicting GDDR5 and GDDR3 memory in its description. They probably havent verified the specs or what not but still I wonder if this laptop will be shipped with different variations of the 5870. Like a stripped down GDDR3 version to some retailers (best buy...ect) and the GDDR5 to others.
-
the 5870 released by ATI only listed GDDR5 as a possible option, if anything that would be a 5850 w/ GDDR3.

Good call on the Hyundai of notebooks. Personally, I would never consider purchasing a Hyundai. I hate them with a fervor which can't be justified. I instead have an Aussie built VRX AWD Magna. Absolutely off topic there... Also, I believe Hyundai came out way ahead of BMW and Merc for reliability (look it up yourself)
So it's interesting that I don't feel the same about laptops. Probably because I know tech way better than automobiles and would not have a problem fixing it myself, so will "risk" the "lesser quality" option.
I'd say also, if you can convince the Indian 1st level support of your issue and diagnose it yourself (as opposed to my in-laws....) you would benefit greatly from having an authorised tech come out with the right components and fix it the next day.
I have enough money to buy a reasonable laptop (it's way more exe here tho), but I can't justify the premium prices for Alienware (yet). Maybe if this Asus burns me I will have the impetus needed to move up to the "quality" you all mention.

I received an order update yesterday from GenTech and they indicate "ETA for this model is early February."
A question I posed earlier that got lost in the AW vs G73 war was whether everyone would arbitrarily recommend additional aftermarket cooling for a gaming laptop or would you wait to see bench data and temps before making that decision. Thanks for your opinions. -
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
I would recommend waiting until you get it to see if you think you might need, or want, additional cooling.
-
we also don't know /exactly/ which cooler will work best atm, or in what way to design a custom one as we aren't fully enlightened in regards to the cooling system as of yet.
-
Sigh, started on page 322...
There's 10 minutes I'll never get back. Thanks guys.

Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
You're welcome.
-
Ugh - if the late Feb date is proved to be true, I won't be able to get it - going to Brazil to see family for 5 weeks in mid-March and it likely wouldn't arrive in time for me to use it during that trip as I live in the UK (which was my original intention).
But the price drop on the Sager NP8690 looks great.... 280m, smaller HDD and only 4GB of Ram, 15" full HD screen - would that be a significant downgrade on the Asus? Then again, we don't even know how this things runs in real life. And Sager's cooling is fantastic so overclocking the 280m wouldn't be an issue and the smaller screen equates to weight benefits.
Basically I need a laptop sooner rather than later and as long as Gentech price Match the new Xotic PC $150 off deal, Asus may have lost me due to the delay... unless anyone can think of a good reason for me to wait another 3 months to replace my 3 year old bucket of bolts? -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
With the W860CU, you get a jaw dropping beautiful 15 inch screen in 16:9 WSXGA or WUXGA flavors, robust cooling, portability, a rigid keyboard that is a pleasure to type on, a very easy to access chassis, business class aesthetics, and a warranty that pretty much lets you do whatever you want to your notebook and not void it. You get what you pay for.
-
It'll not be a significant downgrade, trust me. I don't think there will be a big difference between GTX 280M and the 5870.
If you don't care about 15" screen (for me it's okay, kinda small) then you should get it
@ powernotebooks it looks like they're having sale specials which include NP8690.
Well you're getting 4gig less ram, 1/4 HDD, and no blu-ray player, but what Soviet Sunrise said
I don't think it'll be late feb though, maybe mid feb? -
-
The sager already has excellent reviews while the G73JH-A1 is untested and that partially swings things in its favour as well. I rarely spend this much money all in one go and so want something that will last. Plus I kinda want to play Mirror's Edge with Physx turned on... But that's beside the point. As long as its gaming power is close to the G73JH-A1, I don't mind the slight downgrade in other areas.
Thanks for the info regarding powernotebooks but due to the massive amounts of help that Ken gave me over e-mail during the course of my G73JH-A1 infatuation, I kinda feel like I owe him a sale if he's willing to price match as he's been very understanding and informative so far.
I appreciate everyone's input on the matter though - I'm really growing rather fond of this forum. -
-
There's one thing you gotta know though. There's no OS in sager laptops.
You have to pay around extra 90$ for windows 7 hp i think. -
I'm sure Ken will be able to help. Have you looked into the Sager 8760? It's 17.3" and 1080p if you don't want to give up screen real estate. Otherwise the 8690 is a solid machine. It won't have all the frills of the Asus but it does have a proven track record. -
I think time has stopped. I am going to play PS3 while my pregnant wife does some stupid fit momma video workout dvd.
.... -
I've got to admit, the solid build feel of the 860cu and the 15" size it's very tempting, but so is that 8gb of ram and 1Tb of disk on the G73 (blu ray drive is nice, but I'll rarelly use it).
I prefer NVidia, but the ATI card comes with DX11.
The G73 comes with a great backpack and gaming mouse.
G73 has a great price for what it offers, but so did others on the ROG line (and those had heating and BSOD problems).
AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHH
I think I'll sacrifice some months worth of work and wait for some reviews of the G73 (or for the w860cu to start packing more stuff on the base model) -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
The current Clevo notebook lineup will get a refresh after CeBIT. The new GTX 285M/GTX 380M will be announced and perhaps a few Arrandales will show up. The X8100 also has a good chance of debuting there too. That's pretty much the only reason why Clevo cut their prices; to get rid of the existing inventory of GTX 280M's. That, and to compete with Alienware and now Asus.
-
I know you pay for what you get, but those 8gb would sure come in handy (not for gaming, mind you) aswell as that TB of storage (although I could compromise that with an external drive for the files).
I really don't feel like buying a 17 incher from the Asus ROG line, but... oh the specs... -

But is the W860CU with the 5870 shipping from Santech yet, or is it only on their website?
-
-
Message me when you get it. -
-
I agree with the comments that this Asus G73 really cuts into the Sager plans. I want a laptop now, but I don't need one until April or May. So I'm waiting to see how this Asus turns out. Right now it appears to be a killer value compared to the Sager 8690 and 8760.

anyone doing next day air shipping?

dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
no i can wait two days. lol
what hdd do you think we are going to have.
i'm looking and i see hitachii now does 500@7200rpm not only seagate. honetly i want hitachi
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/Produ...1881&intpromo=winter_holidayguide_09_10011881 -
The Hitachi is supposedly substantially better for most users. There are a couple of threads floating around with the comparisons. The Seagate was released substantially earlier though.
-
I remember the CES model having dual Hitachis..so I'm assuming that's what we're going to get.
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
nice i'm happy if i get them.
-
iirc, the hitachi drives at CES were 320GB tho.
-
I really wish this machine had more of what was common on their other machines...
-PCI Express missing
-Firewire missing
-E Sata missing
-Terrible placement of the ac connection / HMDI connection
-no usb 3.0
That leaves external HD's access only through a network connection or USB 2.0. That honestly sucks.
I think I'm leaning back towards a G51Jx-A1. Though I will miss the extra disk space from a second HDD, and a slight boost in GPU performance, I don't feel like giving up the things that made the rest of their G series what I like it for. -
Thats part of my issue also, that and waiting....a couple of times in the past week I have thought ok they have the G72 at BB for $999 , I can have it today and save about $1700 (because if i got the G73, it would have to be maxed out, at least for the CPU) I mean do i really need all that power and how much of a difference am i gonna notice in games for FPS? (hopefully alot for the sake of the G73)
Im getting really antsy, I hope there arent any other temptations before it gets here, we shouldnt have to wait like this, I thought torture was illegal -
