That ad still has esata, expresscard, firewire etc. in the description towards the bottom. Looks like they need to edit that or else they will have some very bad feedback come shipping time!

That's the reseller ExCaliberPC alternately marketing on eBay. You will find them listed on the lead post of the Crew Member Lounge.

    *Sigh*

I went for the NP8690 in the end guys (upgraded to 4Gb Ram and a full HD screen of course) - needed a new laptop sooner rather than later and felt it wiser to go for something where decent reviews were already out and I knew it wouldn't have any unforeseen issues. Plus, as a heavy gamer, I felt it was a good move to go for something with a tried and tested cooling system as I tend to play for hours on end. I would have rather had the (possible) 20% performance boost the new ATi card would have offered but I think the 280m will do for now - it will surely let me catch up on the past 2 years of PC gaming that I've missed.

Shame though - was looking forward to joining the G73JH-A1 owner's lounge. Still, I'll probably still be visiting this thread fairly frequently to see how the wait for this model finally turns out (plus all the drama that's been going on here is rather entertaining)

Basically, I wasn't quite thinking rationally when I got that laptop. I was willing to spend in the sub-AU$3000 range for a desktop replacement that I could use for my year of study abroad. Since I wasn't going to have a desktop, I wanted the most powerful i7 laptop I could get in that price range, under the restriction that such a laptop also came with international warranty. And that was deciding factor for that machine.

Now I'm thinking more rationally, and trying to balance out cost vs performance vs need. Additionally, there seems to be some confusion here in Australia with our resellers about ASUS global warranty being voided with CPU upgrades. So I'm also considering the potential risk of warranty issues.

well then wouldnt all the votes just be based on peoples ideas. If your going to rate something i would think you want to base it on fact and first hand experience , not what you have read.

If I rated a trip to the moon in a Nasa space shuttle 2 stars because i think it would be a bumpy ride, that would not count because i dont really know, right?

His dates have to be overly optimistic. If Portugal is getting them on the 29th, you'd think other places in North America would have them around the same time.

Hi guys, lets speculate a bit :)

Do you think its possible for Asus to release another laptop, G74 or W91 which would be exactly like this +2nd 5870 for ~2k$ (1700 current price+whatever card cost :) )

any chances, and when if so?

Id love to have 2x5870, but alienware will be too expensive..

Maybe MSI, Sager, or Clevo can release 2x5870 some time soon?

    All ideas are welcome :)

Probably not Asus, after the issues they had with their w90. That probably scared them away from a dual gpu solution for a long time. Maybe I'm wrong though. I'd buy it.

I've been hearing a lot about the MR 5870's being available for Clevo notebooks after their possible debut at CeBIT. Though Clevo has been traditionally green for the past few years ever since they dropped ATi from their last red notebook in 2006, the M560A featuring the direct competitor to my M38AW's 6600 Go, the MR X700, so it is more unlikely that Clevo will pick up ATi again. As for the mysterious GTX 380M, let's just cross our fingers.

I'm from Portugal as well, and the owner of the store i ordered mine from told me they are going to receive 5 (wohooo!) of them in the first batch.

He mentioned 23th of January as the date they would come out of the factory and that by the end of that week they should arrive at the store.

Making it the 29th, as well.

We're probably talking about the same store :D

He told me he had only one left on his first batch.
Thing is, I don't want to order before I'm sure it's a good lappie.

I hope you drop some stats as soon as you receive it, so that I can go grab that last one :p (with some luck)

PS.: As soon as I get it, I'll do an extensive review aswell. Hoping to start a gaming/tech blog (very) soon, do you know what it means to be the first reviewing this beast? :D

    PS2.: Do you study@FEUP?

Replace "country" with "world" and then that would be glorious xD

:) I'm happy enough with my choice but here's hoping the G73 meets expectations to keep all you guys happy - I'd hate to be around to see this thread in full meltdown mode if there aren't any real improvements over the 280m in the end...

Still, going from a laptop that can't even handle Crysis on low at 1024x800 to one that can just about keep it going on high at 1600x800 is enough for me right now (plus I can finally touch the $150 worth of games I bought on the Steam sale over Christmas...)

Yeah, the w860cu is a great lappy, hope you have fun. :D

I'm going from a laptop that can barely run CS 1.6... Didn't bought anything on Steam this Christmas because I bought a book that came with an UT3 steam key... will entertain me for months.

Gonna be a fun time fragging once I get the G73 :p

Well I back up my data continuously using a backup program over my FastEthernet to a NAS. I don't think you'd want to be doing a full 500GB back up every day, so the esata thing isn't that big of a deal to me. I could see it being a problem if you do forensic work or have some other need for daily large file transfer.
The real prob for me is the lack of FW. I have a Cannon Scanner 9900F which I plug in via FW...let me just check... oh it has a USB port too.... sortid.

OK, my only prob is the expresscard. I'm going to have to buy another USB 5.1 sound card...just found that too....sortid. Can't wait for this beast to arrive!!!

I have used several 17" lappies over the years in all three or the four "popular" resolutions 19xx by 10xx, 16xx by 10xx and 1600 by 900. Keep in mind I have poor eyesight, but with that said. :p

1600 by 900 screen works okay with standard font size for me on my lap and sometimes desktop. This is a boon, as some apps forget to code for anything but std font size, and thus are wonky to use at times if you change it. Down side is all 1600 by 900 screens I have seen or used have angle of view issues (color) vertically, and are not quite as uniform back light wise as their higher res (and more expensive) bretheren. I also tend to have to put the windows bar on the side of the screen versus bottom to get close to the realestate I like as a programmer.

16XX by 10XX works for nicely for me realestate wise. And, is okay font wise for my eyes so long as its on my lap. The two lappies I have had/used with this res all had good view angles and uniformity of lighting.

19XX by 10XX. I had a Dell with this screen res, and needed to up font size a bit lap or desktop use, but the realestate was awesome. Screen view angles and lighting uniformity were quite good.

In a graphics/aming setting you should get close to proportionally higher frame rates with the lower resolution, but then you will add more jaggies as well. If your not picky about the later, it will probably extend out how long you can keep the lappy a bit as newer games come out.

Not sure if your near some store with a variety of laptops, but if so you can always stop by and try them out to see how they suit you.

    Just my .02
