I dunno. The new information we tend to be getting is generally bad.

    1) no esata - :(
    2) no expresscard - :(
    3) no firewire - :(
    4) 2 RAM slots - :(
    5) actaully 4 RAM slots - :)

    20% :) isn't agood strike rate imo

    lol

Let's face it folks, we are all here for one thing and one thing only - the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 beast of a video card!

No firewire, esata etc can be a bit of an inconvenience but I am sure we can get over it when you can max out your graphics settings in your favourite games! :)

since i am bored, and i am in dire need of new computer software where is the best place to get this stuff? I definitely need new office...i am still running 2000 on my machine, and my OS is a bulk license of XP I got while I was at Penn State. That OS was so old, It was pre service pack 1, so I had to slip-stream SP2 onto the disc in order to get it to recognize an HDD over over 130 or so GBs. Those are the essentials...any suggestions on where to get?

When you guys get the G73, make sure you test for throttling. It seems a lot of newer i7 based systems have it.

    To answer the question:

"CPU throttling/processor throttling is the process when the CPU tries to avoid overheating and getting damaged. So if the temperature of the CPU exceeds some specified limits, the system will throttle down the CPU, allowing it to cool down and avoid damage. This process may also take place when the computer is idle or no difficult tasks are executed on it. The CPU will take a lower frequency so it consumes less energy and so that the fans make less noise. This technique is used by Intel chips, for example."

It's much more complicated than that because the system bios also throttles the GPU in many instances. This seems to be a problem amongst core i7 systems found in Dell/Acer and now Asus. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see G73 have a built in bios throttling scheme and I hope you guys test for it.

But Intel (ark.intel.com) shows the i5's supporting 8GB, and Toshiba is already shipping them (customized) that way.

Only the i7 Extreme variations seem to support more than 8GB right now.

I am also currently running either 2000 or 2002 (actually I think I'm currently running a hybrid of Word 2002 from a Works CD and Excel and Powerpoint 2000 from Office 2000). My fiancee when she got her new computer also got Office 2007.

As a fan of the older office layout I have to say Office 2007 is awful. The taskbars are different (if there at all) and in the end we downloaded a program that sort of restored the older look. So personally I'd say there is little reason to upgrade (hell, in my federal government office we're using Office 2003 and I doubt we'll upgrade anytime soon, ie within the next 5 years at least). However if you feel the need, I would imagine getting Office 2003 wouldn't be too difficult or expensive (then again I never checked so what do I know).

That is a good point. Maybe I baby step it up to 2003 on the cheap. And then when 2010 Office drops (which appears to be in beta atm) then I can get 2007 on the cheap. As for the OS. Am I to assume that I will own a copy of W7HP64 with the purchase of this lappy.

BTW, I can't wait I am going stir crazy. I went to BB yesterday just to feed my hunger and listened to some idiot to me that the i5 was a quad.

    Hey everyone,
Thanks to all who replied to my post. I would have responded faster but alas my new Zune and Left for Dead 2 have sucked my attention away from the forum. Kudos to all who posted the G73 links, it makes my inner child jump just thinking of it's arrival!

I guess my next question would be how will this thing handle resource hungry apps. I am going to college in the fall for Computer Hardware Tech and I have some programing I need to take. Also plan on running Photoshop CS3 suite, Office 07 and most likely some a/v programs (Fruity Loops, Guitar Pro 5, etc)

My main goal is to get a feel for the i7 performance in a laptop, because by the looks of it, this laptop is gonna be one bad motha....

I also took the advice and ventured to BB to check out the 1920x1080 lap display, glad I did. I am still pleased :) There is just something about having the viewing pleasure of a higher res I just can't shake :)

I will add my 2 cents worth as well.

Being new to the laptop world, I have been thrown into brand name hype and ad related fevers. I've done research on models and been through countless ads for what is out now. I may not understand every aspect to what is "new and hot", but I understand what I personally will get use out of. I have been waiting for awhile to get a new lap, and the G73 seems to fit the bill to perfection. No esata, firewire, exp slot? No big deal. I am actually happy it is without unnecessary ports I wouldn't use. Remember serial, gamepad, and onboard gfx ports for desktops? I am sure most were overjoyed when they ditched those.
Being stuck with USB isn't so bad, I guess maybe if it was my main pc and backup speed was super important then yea. I have used Asus parts for many years, never had one problem. I admire the "gaming power" idea behind this laptop. It gives me the sense of knowing their idea was "here is what you need the most, power and stability without frills. We stand by our decisions, and offer you our quality we have provided for quite some time".
I am not a dedicated fan boy, but dealing with a company that stands by their product is a def plus to me the consumer.
    <end rant>

I agree for the most part. I don't NEED those things, although some of them would be nice to have. The important thing is that the lack of those ports will not affect my enjoyment of the laptop at all.

I can't wait to put it through the ringer and find out how much it will heat up. I also need to run the throttling tests from Joker's post to see if we will have those issues as well.

All I know is that this laptop is going to be HOT. There's no way you'll be able to put this beast on your lap. The G71 was already hot and this one is going to be even hotter.

Wrong. The Ati chip has a lower tdp than the Nvidia chips that were used in the G71. That and the fact that the gpu has an independent fan will make sure it runs much cooler than the G71.

So, just googled a bit, and aparently in my country I have the "buyers remorse" law. Basically, I can play with the laptop for 30 days and then return it to the store, just because.

So, I have plenty of time to test throttling :D

Before I buy it, I have two options:
    1600€ with the 720qm, or 1850€ with the 820qm.

Anyone think it's worth it? Or would I be better off saving those 250€ and buy a processor of eBay later on? (notice I'm talking about eBay Uk, not US).
