Does anyone have any knowledge of the performance boost the i7 Extreme 920XM would give over the i7 720QM? Is it worth an extra 1.1k?
-
-
IMO not worth it
-
-
I opted for the 820 processor... I'm sure on a price/performance level, it's not worth it, but I'm hoping it'll give some additional little kick. I decided against the 920 because of its higher power requirements (55 vs 45 watts). I didn't want to test the cooling of this new design any more than I had to.

getting a 920xm is not worth it for 1.1k.

the 920xm is only for benchers, the rest of the world does not need it lol

For the vast majority of users' tax brackets it isn't worth it. But for people that want the best, they have to pay for the best.

As for the 1.1k 920 upgrade, Im taking it just so this will hold its value and usefulness longer, for me to justify spending this much it has to last at least 2.5 to 3 years. I would just get the base model and upgrade myself to save money but that damn warranty sticker freaks me out.
I hope this doesnt turn out to be a lemon, everytime i spend alot on an item lately its screwed up. I drove a car for 2 years that i bought for $2800 until it was totaled and said screw it and bought a new Landrover, biggest mistake of my life so many flaws I lost so much money. then i paid close to $500 for a Archos Mp3 player that turned out to have so many problems i just want to hurl it against a brick wall so i can move on. so i hope this will not turn out like all my other big ticket items, do you guys think this will have issues? -
Yes........

Found this one for canadian buyers.

Luckily I have my G51J keeping me warm and fuzzy, so I haven't done anything rash yet. -
at least you got a g51j, I got a 3year old desktop that can't do anything. -
I can't imagine you and mack struggling with your crusty old machines. My g51 plays all my games pretty well; I also have a killer desktop at home. I feel for you guys, but I think we will know something very soon though. Just a hunch.

If you really want a 920xm, buy it on ebay for $600 and sell the 720qm for $250-300....
-
I have been eyeballing this since about New Years. I have finally decided that I will be getting this unless there is some kind of major issue.
My thoughts:
The price is GOOD. Which can make up for alot.
The video card having only the 128-bit bus width (do I have the jargon right?) is a bit of a downer, but depending on where it lands after it is benchmarked, the price still makes up for alot.
The missing ports (express card, fw, etc.) is a little worrying, but if I think about it, I am not sure I have used any of those in about 4 years anyways.
I seem to be bouncing back and forth between thinking the case design is really ugly to oddly charming... I think it is the back ledge that is getting to me. Not a deal breaker though.
I am upgrading from a 3 year old Dell Inspirion E1705/9400, with a nvidia Geforce 7800 Go. About 6 months ago, my cooling system shut down, cooking my video card. Dell was good enough to replace the cooling system and the video card as well as the power cable and brick. But the warranty is out now.
I do want to wait until various aspects have been seen by other users, and I want to hear feedback on how hot it runs before I buy. Also, I have been reading about the problems other ASUS gaming laptops have had. How long should I wait before ordering to see if any deal-breaking negative aspects are discovered? -

bibblenorn,
i have same questions and worries, especially after reading that topic about g71.. Some problems might show only in 2-3 months, so if it is released in the middle of February, it's better to wait for these 2-3 months, i guess.. But who can do that??)
nothing better for that price seem to be showing up.. Dell, HP, Toshiba don't seem to be promising that much)
I fell worried too especially cuz if i buy G73 in US, i'm going to take it home, to Russia. Where it might be a huge problem to fix or replace it =\ -
I agree with this...if you are not an idiot, you should be able to keep the warranty in tact.
I plan on doing this
-Getting the base model with the DVDRW downgrade
-updating the Blu-Ray when media and writers are more affordable
-getting an SSD when the larger sizes come out and I can get a Smaller one for OS and apps on the cheap
-once the warranty expires...upping the processor to the i7 920 or the best it can handle
-selling the i7 720 chip
-loading it up on the cheap with the max ram -
I would only deem it "necessary" for Sli/Crossfire rigs.
I had a QX9300/280M rig, but only GTA4 and L4D saw any noticeable gains, and that was coming from a P9600. In other words, the 720QM is more than adequate for this rig. -

bah...i do not feel like scrolling back to find jokers post, however it was stated by Asus that removal of the stickers does not void the warranty. It just means that they are going to take extra precaution to make certain that no foul play was involved. Which to me read, if you smash a bunch of the pins on the board while you were fumbling aronud with the processor well....then you effed yourself in the A.
You can try to remove the stickers with a hairdryer, but here are my thoughts on that. If you buy from a reseller, then they probably have documentation of what was installed and warranted on that machine. So that would be pointless. I am no expert here...I would recommend erroring on the side of caution. Get the bare minimum 720 chip. If it is not fast enough. I am sure that you have options for an upgrade....maybe a reseller can do some work for you, maybe you can send it to Asus for the upgrade...maybe the 720 chip is fine, and performs up to your standards. I cannot justify the 920s 1100 price tag. Sheet. that pretty much doubles the cost of the machine. I would get the machine...wait 2 years...if you still love the machine then upgrade the chip then.
If you have to have the best...think about it this way. the 920 is not going to be the best for long, so you will probably either freak out and kill youself cause the guy down the street has an i7 1020 or an i9 chip or whatever the next confusing variation will be so, you are going to either die or void the warranty then...
I would just get the 720 and let is fester. Some of that must have the best feeling all the time quickly dwindles and you will be gald you saved. If it grows into a monster, then feed it with an i7 920, do the upgrade yourself and it will only cost you $400 if you off the 720 chip.
Just my .02
/end rant -
Thank you guys for all the input, you just saved me $1.1k , im going with the 720

I'm absolutely sure it's total wishful thinking, but.... Is that front left USB slightly bigger than the rear one? ie. e-sata.... It has been bugging me since the first videos, but I'm sure it's a trick of eyes with the sloping keyboard...but.... AAAARRRGGGHHH will this thing just come already???? -

Yes, you could probably condense this entire thread to 2 or 3 pages of relevant and correct information.
Not that I in anyway did not enjoy the speculation, debating, and sheer giddy repetition and questioning. Oh, yeah. You know ASUS hit the right consumer buttons when the hype/discourse about a notebook that isn't even released amounts to 3500 posts in one thread and one forum alone. -

Hey everybody,
I got stuck at page 120 orso.. So I guess I missed out on some information. But I was still wondering about the 128 bit bus.. Correct me if I am wrong, but the new video card (the 8570 serie) and the new GDDR5 make it up for the 128 bit bus?
What I mean is that an older card with a 128 bit bus would more or less crumble when playing games at 1920 * 1080.. But this card can actually handle games at this high resolution?
Thanks -

Does anyone know if the touchpad is multi-touch? I'm switching from a MacBook Pro and have gotten used to the 2-finger scrolling etc.

highly unlikely
if I had to guess.....synaptics like every other notebook on the market -

I would expect this to be about 5-10% better than a 4870m (at most)
It should be able to do well in all but the most demanding titles just fine -
that's like gtx 280m with a slight overclock.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
the 4870 is overall about 5% stronger than a GTX 280m at stock
the 5870 should be another 5-10% on top of that -

I hope it works as well as I am used to. -

it exists, but I have not heard of it being used in any notebooks, maybe in handheld devices though, they sell to people other than notebook manufacturers
